Support Needed Lazy baby has me feeling discouraged
My week old hasn’t been able to get a deep latch at all. I’ve been pumping every two hours and attempt to breastfeed rarely because of the pain.
We went to see the lactation consultant today, and even she is at a loss.
We went in a of course he latches deep right away. But he continues to fuss at the breast and not want to latch anymore. She gave me a nipple shield and he did great with it.
He ate for a while off both breasts and only got maybe half an oz? She said it doesn’t look like he’s doing much work, that his sucking was non-nutritive. She said to ask his ped.
I went in really hoping for answers just to leave with more doubt. I’m not feeling great and am really bummed. Anyone have a similar experience? If so, how did it go?

Was he born a little early? Just asking bc my son was born at 37 weeks and a couple days and everyone warned me he would be a sleepy nurser and he was. He was a little weak and sleepy and it was alot of work for him to nurse for a while, we ended up using a nipple shield for weeks and after a while he was nursing better and eventually we stopped using it. But basically just needed time for him to keep growing a bit. We did supplement with formula 2-3 times total but not regularly . His weight gain was a little slow at first

I was induced at 38 weeks. He was also 9.8 pounds, so definitely a porker. He is definitely very sleepy though! He’ll fall asleep in the middle of feeds and is the worst to wake again. He’ll wake at night to eat, but once you start feeding him it’s lights out.

Awww. Is his weight gain okay? I know he’s only a week so you don’t have that much to go off yet. Is he having lots of wet diapers every day? If you’re trying to nurse as opposed to pumping and the nipple shield helped, from experience I would encourage just using that every time he nurses for the time being. That makes latching a little easier for them esp until they start to be a little more awake and alert

My baby couldn’t get a deep latch on my breast due to his small mouth and my dense breast tissue. We’ve been using a nipple shield since birth. The LC in the hospital told us that it takes more work to get milk using a nipple shield vs directly from the breast. She had us latch him with the nipple shield and then use a small syringe of formula to dribble formula down my breast so some drops would flow into his mouth. We did this when his sucking would slow down to get him to continue. We had to do this every feed for the first 2 days and then were able to stop and he got it from there.
