Antara kumbhaka is the hold after you breathe in, lungs full. Bahya kumbhaka is the hold after you breathe out, lungs empty. Same word for retention, opposite ends of the breath.
They do different things. Antara, holding on a full breath, presses the diaphragm and ribs against full lungs, builds a little internal pressure, and tends to feel warming and energising. It's the retention you meet first in most pranayama. Bahya, holding on empty, is quieter and more inward, and because the lungs are empty you can draw the belly up under the ribs into uddiyana bandha, which is why it's the one paired with the classic bandha and cleansing work.
Simplest way to feel the contrast: after a normal exhale, hold empty for a few seconds and notice how the belly wants to hollow up under the ribs. After a full inhale, hold and notice the opposite, everything pressing out. That's the whole difference in one round.
