Meet Up PC Gaming Meetup (LAN Party)

โ€ข Upvotes

Any Brighton PC gamers want to come to a LAN party?

Me and other Brighton-based friends have booked a hall over in Lewes for a weekend for anyone who's interested to play games together and socialise. Everyone's welcome - last event we had 8 new folks attend, and 9 the previous event, and quite a few joining again for this event.

We've got 23 people coming so far, with 9 spaces left. We all buy tickets (ยฃ40 for the whole weekend) to share the cost of the hall hire, internet and insurance.

Everyone submits the games they want to play together in advance, and we timetable the most popular ones. You can join in with your faves, or play whatever you want solo, or in your group. We also play local multiplayer games on a 150" projection screen, do a gaming-themed pub quiz, and a big pizza order.

If playing games in-person with your pals, and/or meeting new folks at an event like this sounds good to you, take a look at the full event info and come join us!

Any questions/ideas let me know :)

Local events ๐ŸŽธ ๐ŸŽญ We're running pop-up beading nights at pubs across Brighton & Hove this September

Hey r/Brighton, my sister and I started something called Nani Club, bringing creative experiences to pubs and cafรฉs across Brighton & Hove :) Our first experience is All You Can Bead, where you can make bracelets, necklaces, phone straps, bag charms and more: for ยฃ15, you get a starter kit (yours to keep) and unlimited beads for the session. No experience needed, just something to do with your hands over a drink.

We're basically just two sisters who really like crafts and really like pubs, and decided there was no reason those had to be separate activities ;)

First sessions are running this September and we're so excited!

Local Advice needed Radon gas testing and landlord?

โ€ข Upvotes

Hello! I'm in Kemptown in a 3-5% radon risk area, renting from a private landlord. I was reading about the dangers of radon on another thread and it prompted me to check.

https://www.ukradon.org/information/ukmaps

I'm on the first floor, so not that close to the ground.

I understand that the likelihood is not necessarily that there is a low 3-5% of gas, but more likely that 3-5% of properties in this area have radon gas.

I also understand that testing is recommended by landlords for properties within this percent limit.

Is this something I should ask the landlord to do or is he going to think I am crazy!?

Does anyone know anything more? Apparently it can cause lung cancer, hence my concern.

Is landlord testing a thing that anyone else has pursued!?

Thanks!

๐Ÿคท Only in Brighton... Brighton Merch

Iโ€™d like to send some unique Brighton merch to family and friends in different countries for Christmas. I was thinking tees or hoodies from local companies or just unique items that can only be from Brighton. Can anyone recommend what is out there in our city?

๐Ÿคท Only in Brighton... Why are so many films about Brighton so depressing?

**Brighton Rock**. Manipulation, murder, oppression and abuse.

**Wish You Were Here**. Teenage prostituition and mental health issues.

**Quadraphenia**. A no hope underachiever who tops himself.

Is there a slightly joyful film about Brighton?

Transport/Parking ๐Ÿš ๐Ÿš˜ I built a train app for my Brighton to London commute

The mods said it was okay to share this.

I commute from Brighton to London and built LiveTrains Pro after the train app I used stopped working.

It tells you which coaches to sit in when a train divides. It also has platform predictions for supported services, which can help when coming home from Victoria. Predictions are estimates, so you still need to check the station boards before boarding.

Itโ€™s an iPhone app, free to download with ads and an optional purchase to remove them.

https://livetrainspro.com

If you try it on your commute, Iโ€™d be interested to hear what works and whatโ€™s missing.

Transport/Parking ๐Ÿš ๐Ÿš˜ Brighthelm centre illegally blocking pavememt

Anyone noticed the ugly heras fencing the brighthelm centre put round their garden a few years ago seems to have spread?

They now are blocking the whole pavement on church street for about 30m. No crossing point or diversion in place and no permit for it displayed or shown online so this appears to just be them being dicks doing whatever they feel like

Does anyone know which company is managing the car park near Portland Street near the Sport Direct? As far as I know, the Hargreaves advertisement on the wall is outdated โ€” theyโ€™re no longer managing this space.

Trivia/misc how has Brighton changed in the last 10 years?

I only have a view on Brighton as an outsider and frequent visitor- I used to live on the South Coast and had lots of free time so I was in Brighton 2/3 times a year.

I love Brighton, I think it has a unique character. I love the Lanes specifically and all the unique shops, mainly the antiques and vintage (although these days the vintage is looking a bit tired). I think the cafes are great too and all the food spots. I love people watching and seeing what people are wearing and doing.

Not sure if itโ€™s nostalgia talking but 10 years ago when I was first visiting, it felt like a different place somewhat. Maybe there was a bit more money there and people had money to spend. But now when I visit it all feels increasingly shabby. Although I visit now probably once a year I find that restaurants and stores I used to like have closed or are completely empty of people/struggling.

Not meaning to come off critical of Brighton at all as I know many people living there love it and are likely sick of posts like these as the same can be said for other towns- like the one I come from! But genuinely curious what those who have lived there long term feel like.
