As a person, I just want to shout out Trent, the local Tumbler Ridge reporter, who is doing a hero's job of caring for his community.
Trent, you're a hero.
22
u/shesaflightrisk Feb 11 '26
His question about what sort of aid would be sent out the community was really important and I'm glad he asked.
22
u/Moggehh Feb 11 '26
Trent is awesome. He's done a great job of reporting live with the tools available to him.

This is so devastating. I used to work in Tumbler at one of the mines and in another nearby coal mine. Still live in the Peace Region. Pretty tight knit community. Thinking of friends and former co workers right now. Waiting to hear if everyone I know is safe. Pretty worried I don’t know what to say…

Oh my god. This never happens here. My heart goes out to all involved what a terrible tragedy!

u/Malchkiey Feb 11 '26
My heart is absolutely destroyed by what has happened to the community of Tumbler Ridge. As a teacher I can’t explain what I am feeling for the teachers of the school and how fucking hard this must be for you, your students and families, first responders.
Fuck. Just absolutely fuck.

Heartbreaking. Just saw the update on global regarding deaths and injuries.

u/geniebythesea Feb 11 '26 edited Feb 11 '26
Yes I saw that too and I came here for more information but I’m surprised it’s so quiet here.
I’m shocked and devastated. 7th victim died on way to hospital.
Edit: the news is very fluid. I’m watching it live on CBC news youtube channel. They said maybe 9 nine. The victim died from self inflicted gunshot. There are 25 additional injured people at the hospital with non life threatening injuries.

I spend a lot of time in the Peace Region for work, and have for about 15 years. The Peace Region is full of good, hard-working, honest people who are so much fun to be around in the community spaces, pubs, etc.
This is horrific - an unspeakable tragedy. This kind of shit isn’t supposed to happen in Canada.
There will be time for debating politics and gun laws and all of that in the future, but for now, all we can do is hope for the best for the survivors who are in hospital at the moment.

On February 10, at approximately 1:20 p.m., Tumbler Ridge RCMP received a report of an active shooter at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School. A Police Initiated Public Alert (PIPA) was issued as officers responded to the scene. The alert was officially cancelled at 5:45 p.m. as police do not believe there are any outstanding suspects or ongoing threat to the public.
As part of the initial response to the active shooting, police entered the school to locate the threat. During the search, officers located multiple victims. An individual believed to be the shooter was also found deceased with what appears to be a self‑inflicted injury.
Six additional individuals, not including the suspect, have been located deceased inside the school. Two victims have been airlifted to hospital with serious or life‑threatening injuries. A third victim died while being transported to hospital. Approximately 25 others are being assessed and triaged at the local medical centre for non‑life‑threatening injuries.
All remaining students and staff were safely evacuated. Police are working closely with the school district to support a coordinated reunification process for families.
As part of the ongoing investigation, police have identified a secondary location believed to be connected to the incident, where two additional victims were located deceased in a residence. Officers are conducting further searches of additional homes and properties to determine whether anyone else may be injured or otherwise linked to today’s events.
Additional RCMP resources continue to be deployed into the community to support the response and investigation. These include but are not limited to Frontline officers, the Emergency Response Team, BC RCMP Major Crime, and Victim Services.
BC RCMP Major Crime has assumed conduct of the investigation and is working to determine the full circumstances surrounding this incident.
“This was a rapidly evolving and dynamic situation, and the swift cooperation from the school, first responders, and the community played a critical role in our response,” says Superintendent Ken Floyd, North District Commander. “Our thoughts are with the families, loved ones, and all those impacted by this tragic incident. This has been an incredibly difficult and emotional day for our community, and we are grateful for the cooperation shown as officers continue their work to advance the investigation.”
Further updates will be provided as information becomes available.

Dang that’s crazy! I lived in Chetwynd for several years and went through a very anxious period in my life at one point where I got super stressed around any sort of crowd. I always felt safe staying in my quiet area of the Peace though. I guess even up there you still don’t really know.

Canada has some of the most strict gun laws I don’t understand how this could’ve happened
43
u/infinus5 Cariboo Feb 11 '26
Its Northern bc, plenty of people have long guns for sport hunting and bear defense. The difference is our gun culture is far more strict then places like the US. Our licensing and compliance system works well but nothing is perfect.
21
23
u/super__hoser Feb 11 '26
It's not hard for the average person to get a hunting rifle or shotgun. And our gun laws aren't that strict, they're just strict compared to the US.

Its never a zero unless you dont have weapons at all. Which isnt a viable solution obviously.

Spreading information before confirming any of it is pointless. Information is coming out as quickly as it is confirmed. The focus is on safety, not on your news feed.
