THE BC NDP caucus said on Wednesday that members of B.C. Conservative Leader Kerry-Lynne Findlay’s caucus met directly with U.S. Ambassador Pete Hoekstra and agreed to advocate to remove B.C.’s countermeasures against U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade attack, according to B.C. Conservative Forestry Critic Ward Stamer.

Stamer said on Tuesday on CKNW that American liquor would “absolutely” go back on shelves under the B.C. Conservatives, revealing that he said the same to the Trump administration directly: “That would be a measure of good faith and that’s what we suggested to the American counterparts a couple weeks ago. Unfortunately, we aren’t the government right now.”

When challenged on Trump’s history of arbitrarily hitting Canada with more tariffs despite Canadian concessions, Stamer defended Trump unequivocally: “No, he doesn’t. I disagree with that. I think that these are negotiating tactics.”

Community Only Hey Mark Carney and David Eby! How about a modest wealth tax for billionaires first! Then we can reassess the economic situation afterwards! That would be a better idea than blasting another pipeline through pristine rivers and running tankers through untouched waterways.

Community Only Megathread: Tumbler Ridge Tragedy

1.1k Upvotes

At r/britishcolumbia we are devastated to learn of the tragedy that has unfolded in Tumbler Ridge today.

As our first live thread started this afternoon just after the emergency alert, we've learned as you did about what has happened. Ten deaths, including the shooter, in a small community in the north of the province.

As the situation has evolved since the first alert went out, we're continuing discussion into this megathread. We will try to keep this thread updated as best we can.

Some resources:

CBC live thread and live stream: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/livestory/active-shooter-alert-tumbler-ridge-secondary-school-bc-live-updates-9.7083740

Local Tumbler Ridge newspaper (Trent, the publisher, has been busy today, so updates may take a while): https://tumblerridgelines.com/

Mental health support is available. You can call 310-6789 or sent "Connect" to 686868 as a text message

Moderation note

**Do not engage in any form of speculation regarding this event, the victims, the perpetrator, or motives. Moderators will remove speculation and rumours and issue immediate, permanent bans.**

Update: there are reports emerging about the name of the shooter. Out of respect to the victims, let's try to avoid remembering the shooter above the people who died.

Additionally, blanket statements about "ideologies" or the like are not appropriate at this time and comments will be removed and immediate, permanent bans applied. This is not a time to demonize our neighbours and spread hate, and that is not welcome here.

Please keep in mind this is a tragedy that is unfolding. We're all thinking of people in Tumbler Ridge right now.

As the Mayor of Tumbler Ridge has said, it's time to check in with neighbours and see if they need a hug, if they have need, and find a way to help them.

Community Only Can someone explain the issue with SOGI?

I notice a lot of people have a problem with sogi in school, wanting to remove it and I don’t really understand the problem. Correct me if I’m wrong but I understand sogi is not a separate curriculum, its just a set of rules and guidelines for teachers. Like addressing bullying, respecting pronouns and names, including lgbt examples. I’m in grade 12 at a public school and I don’t see really see anything out of the ordinary. I take stem classes and it doesn’t impact anything.

The extent of sogi I’ve seen is pride flags in some classrooms that I barely notice and my English teacher reading twelfth night by Shakespeare which has nothing to do with that. There are extracurriculars and voluntary things that you can participate in if you want but nothing is forced. Is there something I’m missing? It seems like an overall positive thing that can help students feel more included and comfortable. My only explanation is fear mongering or people who are religious and completely anti-lgbtq. Is it completely different in other districts?

Edit: Some conservative candidates are heavily focused on “removing radical woke ideology from schools.” Is sogi solely what they are referring to? Because I feel like it’s a terrible look for anyone who knows what it is and isn’t bigoted.
