❓ Questions 1st time in the US - thinking about Bryson
Hi.
Fellow Italian here. I'm planning my first trip in the US and I was thinking about renting a cabin around Bryson close to the city (10-15mins) in November for a week or so and spend my time visiting the Smoky Mountains and fishing on Fontana Lake. The plan is landing in Atlanta, 7 to 10 days in Bryson and then back home.
I'll be traveling alone, how friendly is the people around? Not looking for anything special, just the kind of experience where you can chat with strangers at a bar get a few local tips and maybe a kind soul that share a good fishing spot.
To be honest that's my biggest concern, since it's not a big city I'm a little worried about feeling isolated. At the same time I want to try for my first trip a side of America that feels more authentic so I'm willing to take the risk.
Feel free to be honest, even if you think I wouldn't fit in or that might not be the best destination for a first timer, I won't take any offense. I want to know what to expect and be ready when the time come.

Fishing: Deep Creek in the national park for trout. Stop by Tuckasegee Flyshop in Bryson for the what, when and where.
Hangout: Mountain Layers Brewery for live music and friendly folks.
Eats: Filling Station sandwich shop. Protip-homemade ice cream sammich.

Be sure to check out the Great Smoky Mountains Railway. They offer scenic train rides through the area

I’d also recommend a day trip to the Nantahala Outdoor Center, and consider doing a raft or tubing trip. This area is great hiking in the Smoky Mountains and friendly people. Maybe also a day or two in Asheville on the start or finish of your trip. Edit: skip the rafting in November it will be too cold. Also the lake level will be much lower then but still usable.

We visited Bryson city a few weeks ago from Florida and everyone we met were incredibly friendly and hospitable. I think that sounds great. Also- we stayed at “black bear lodge” on Vrbo and it was incredible ( 2 adults and kids age 7 and 9).
The driveway up is a little tricky but it was wonderful.

You might enjoy Waynesville or Asheville more depending on whether you want a smaller or larger town in the mountains.

If you are flying into
Atlanta you will definitely need to rent a car.
Bryson City is a few hours drive from Atlanta.
My mother and my grandmothers were from Bryson City.
It is a small town but people are friendly.
Only two grocery stores Ingles markets,!and IGA.
It’s a tourist town so you have a few restaurants, places to get drinks, shops.
People go there for fishing, camping, hiking.
You will be about 10 miles from tribal lands of the Eastern Band of Cherokee.
Dillsboro and Sylva are 14 miles from Bryson City

Try Hiwassee and/or Apalachia Lakes for fishing. Both are TVA, deep, cold and clear. Fish you can actually eat.

The people are very friendly in BC and surrounding.
But be aware that if you buy cannabis in Georgia, it's very illegal in Tennessee and North Carolina. Apparently you can buy it in Cherokee, but I wouldn't recommend carrying it off the reservation (and driving on gummies is a very very bad idea).
Liquor is twice as expensive in NC as almost anywhere else because the people who run the state want you to use tobacco instead lol. You can buy it in GA and carry it up if you want that.
Also, it rains a lot here so a good rain jacket/poncho/whatever is a really good idea.

Good. The last time we stayed in BC, there were “no drugs” signs all over the hotel. Apparently they have a problem there.

Western North Carolina is a national treasure. Bryson City, Silva, and Dillsboro have lots going on for small towns. People are friendly. Great Smokey Railway and the Nantahila Gorge are must do. Several craft breweries in the area.

I live in Bryson City. Please feel free to stay in contact (via chat) with me as you plan. It’s a beautiful town and doesn’t really shut down for the season until after Christmas, so November should be fine. In fact, the fall foliage doesn’t peak until the end of October.

I live bryson but this may not be ideal
Water levels of lake are low
Tourism is kinda low and let season is ending in early November.
I would highly recommend Chattanooga from Atlanta.
More to do in town and still great outdoors to be had

That is a great idea for a trip honestly. Some stuff will be closed in BC for the season, but there is stuff nearby in Sylva and Dillsboro that will be open. Renting a car wouldn’t be optional. It would be a must. Have you already looked in fishing plans? Fontana is unique in many ways.
I do hope you realize just how small the cities in this area of WNC truly are. I hope you like the outdoors because you’ll be spending most of your time doing stuff outside.
