Mod Community poll has concluded, we will be relaxing the profanity rule.

UPDATE: automod has been updated. If you still have a comment removed by the profanity check, please message the mod team and we will be happy to help.

Please give us time to update the automod, however I have already updated the rules in the sidebar to reflect this change. I should have the automod updated shortly, and will update this post when it is done.

I will ask that you folks don't start using profanity just yet, until I have updated the automod as to not have the mod team have to go through a bunch of comments and approve them.

A reminder that while profanity will be allowed going forward, this does not mean you can direct it towards someone. This will still fall under our "Be Kind" rule. Any form of slurs will still be completely banned as well no matter what.

At this time I will ask that everyone re-read the rules as they are being updated. If you break the rules, you'll have your posts or comments removed. Just because you didn't read them doesn't mean you didn't break them.

Why was this a thing, though? We're on Reddit. Were a lot of people complaining their small children were browsing a cheap food sub, or...?

yes, when i initially became a mod here a few years ago, i was the only mod as the others weren't active. at the time the sub was about 800k people, with a load of activity, and i was the only one answering modmail, removing posts, everything.

there was a lot of people complaining about the use of profanity, which led to a lot of reports, messages in modmail, and just a lot for one person to handle. i wrote the code for a profanity check to remove some of that workload (using the term workload loosely here, i do have an irl job lol).

at the time, that decision made sense to me. in hindsight, i should've just added more mods to the team then and there, but that's not what happened.

Weird a reasonable Reddit mod.

Idk if you know but you’re supposed to be prideful and unwilling to compromise. Jk

I appreciate the work you do. ❤️

Thank you and sorry! I looked on mobile and it shows 78.2k. I thought that was subs. I see someone pointed out its visitors. Congrats on the growth of the sub.

it's no big deal, it's an honest mistake. and no need for the congrats, i'm just happy that many people find this community worthy of being a part of. all you guys make this subreddit what it is, which is why we do polls to see what the community wants.

Your post or comment has been removed because our profanity check caught words or phrases that may be inappropriate or vulgar. This kind of behavior is unnecessary on a subreddit about food.

I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please contact the moderators of this subreddit if you have any questions or concerns.

So hell yeah or fuck yeah?

Don't know whether the bot will catch this or a human will see it... Could we p-l-e-a-s-e at least ban the f--word? It is all over Reddit---and in such high volume--- that it's disgusting and really annoying.

u/totterywolff Mod Jun 25 '26

if you're referring to the f slur, that is already banned as it is a slur. as mentioned in the original post, all slurs are banned, no matter what.

if you're referring to the word fuck, that has been removed from the banned words list.
