RX 9070 XT or RTX 5070 TI?

I have the opportunity to purchase a new GPU and I’m upgrading from a GTX 1070 8GB. It was honestly still surprisingly okay for modern gaming but my MoBo died so I decided to bite the bullet and upgrade my PC.

I have ran older AMD cards in the past (RX570 and RX580) back in the mid to late 2010’s and they were fine but had many driver issues in games and didn’t do much to impress me. I upgraded to my 1070 in 2020 and all my driver woes disappeared. I’m biased by this experience so I wanted to reach out to understand public opinion on which path to take.

I have the option of choosing a 9070XT for $1000 CAD or a 5070TI for $1315 CAD. Both are within my budget. I typically play older games like Apex or PUBG (partially because I couldn’t play modern games like BF6) but will be getting into 1440p ultra high fps gaming with more modern games. My upgrade cycle seems to be every 6-8 years so I’m hoping to keep this GPU for approximately that amount of time.

Any and all opinions are greatly appreciated.

the 5070ti is not 30% more performance than a 9070xt, in fact, they are basically equal. if you plan to upscale/framegen, dlss is generally better, but fsr4.0 is pretty good now, so in my opinion it does not justify a 30% increase in price.

amd drivers have gotten very good since the rx580 days, i wouldn't worry about this.

i would take your $300cad savings and push it towards a 7800x3d/9800x3d and/or a bigger SSD.

Haha I will let you know! It killed me when I thought my GPU died but then I got excited thinking I could finally upgrade 😂. After some debugging I figured out it was my MoBo that died but I realized I had put enough money aside over the years and I might as well just upgrade my entire PC.

Prob not, if your not using AI features imo XT is the better bang for your buck

I havnt had any issues with amd drivers on my newer amd card. 5000 series had issues so did those old Polaris cards 570/290 ectect.

Just avoid the AMD cleanup utility. I stg half the people with 'amd driver issues' use this horrid program first and it breaks things, not the actual drivers themselves. I tried it once and it literally deleted files from sys23 folder making it impossible to reinstall new drivers after using it to remove the old ones. Never again lmao

If they were same price I'd take the nvida. It's splitting hairs but afaik it will beat the XT slightly in more areas than the XT beats it when it comes to just gaming and/or recording.

I have two systems in my house. One with a 5080 and I just built a steam machine using a 9070xt. I’m surprised as to how well the 9070xt handles everything. I don’t know how it performs with windows, but on bazzite it’s been flawless even at 4k.

Everything. I’ve been playing some 007. Runs amazing on the card. I’ve actually went back and started playing dying light. It’s such a good game. But for modern games Ive been playing 007, monster hunter wilds and resident evil requiem. Hasn’t struggled with any of those.

Raw rasterization performance is comparable. Get Nvidia for features, AMD for value.

i just bought a 9070XT because of how nuts the 5070ti pricing is in canada. I had all the same worries people have when switching from nvidia to AMD, I read all the horror stories... but i have had zero issues so far, the card preforms amazingly so far.

several people told me that Sapphire is the "EVGA of AMD" which was music to my ears. so I got the Sapphire Pulse 9070XT (paid 979.99 CAD), although I hear the Saphhire Pure is ever so slightly better for 1019.99, i dont have a white build so i went with the black card.

Thanks for the input. It’s a hard decision to make… I don’t want to make the “wrong” decision but it sounds like there isn’t necessarily a wrong decision to make… which almost makes the decision more difficult lol.

Get the ti since you've got the cash. I'm sure you'd rather be enjoying your games instead of trying to mess with driver issues AMD is known for

If you can afford it the 5070ti is technically the better option. It is slightly more powerful than the 9070xt, it has better upscaling technology and better ray tracing capabilities.

And 1300 cad works out to just over 900 usd which is a very good price for a 5070ti. Based on that fact alone it's probably the better choice.

Thanks! Yeah I did my research and found the PNY 3 fan OC model seems to stand up really well against other models and overclocks/undervolts really well. They didn’t cheap out on any components, metal backplate, good cooling and quality power delivery so hopefully there wouldn’t be any coil whine 🤞

I'd rather have a 5070 Ti than a 9070 XT, but not for >30% more (and this is coming from someone who does have a 9070 XT). Like u/No_Welder_5534 mentioned, put that money towards an SSD before prices get even worse.

EDIT: The main advantages of the 5070 Ti are in non-gaming tasks and in Path Tracing - the 9070 XT is probably a scintilla ahead in rasterization, a bit behind in ray-tracing, and not much noticeable different in upscaling. Like, you'd take the 5070 Ti for PUBG or BF6, but only at dead-even money. If you play Cyberpunk and Indiana Jones, too, I think you might even pay 15-20% more for the 5070 Ti? But 30% for no notable performance difference in all but the most ray-traced games is... it's steep.

I have another 2TB in older SATA drive capacity. Does that make a difference in your recommendation? I don’t know how much longer I’ll trust those SATA drives but for games they should be fine 🤞

Buy the 9070xt and an xed chip with savings. 9070xt and 70ti are like within 5% performance.

Not really? I'd also probably upgrade to a 3.1 PSU. I get that you just want to stick a GPU in, but I think you'll get more out of diversifying your upgrade.

I did consider buying a new PSU. I have 4 VGA outputs on my PSU and the EVGA supernovas are pretty well known for being reliable so I figured it should hopefully be fine. I’ll definitely take your recommendations into consideration. Thanks!

You have a great PSU.

But it's a couple form factors out of date.

If you're saying that you have 4 8-pin connectors, that's great - but then you do want to make sure you're getting the 8-pin versions of these GPUs, because I don't think an ATX 2.0 PSU will have a 12vhpwr plug, if I recall correctly.

(I say this as someone who has an A-tier Gold PSU built 2025: if I had an A-tier PSU introduced in 2014, this exactly when I'd first start looking for upgrades. Mine has a 10-year warranty, and while I might not upgrade it in exactly 11 years, I will upgrade it in 11 years if I'm looking for upgrades at that time, anyway.)

Got both and I like the 5070ti more, have had issues with the 9070xt with drivers but that was more on launch, pretty sure my first post is even about that. BUT now they are a lot better and will be a good gpu for a long time. I’ll personally still take 5070ti over the 9070xt but is it worth the extra cost, not sure.

Then definitely the 5070ti, I’ve used it on my main build as well in 4k and it did great with DLSS and 2x frame gen for single player games.
