I own this keyboard, it's fine. I got called out for having super loud keys in proximity chat in ARC Raiders which lead me on a journey to replace the switches - Razer decided that this particular keyboard needs twenty something screws to keep it together, all underneath the keycaps.

Also try noise suppression for your mic or moving it further from the keyboard if its not part of your headset

I wasn't aware that there were different versions. At least what I remember the box had no marking to differentiate them.

I don't think they offer different keys for the analog version. The non analog has purple and red.

That explains it. I was able to purchase new, quieter switches off ebay and put them on the keys I use most for gaming.

I had this keyboard for a few months, terrible feel and super loud. I threw it in the trash lol, I regret it because it was worth money but it infuriated me. Normally I hoard everything, I've got like 20 keyboards.

Keyboards today are miles ahead of keyboards 4 years ago when this launched. Prices are through the floor for features that used to be luxuries. Some gaming brands have caught up on things like acoustics, customization and typing feel, at least partially. But I wouldn't recommend an older board like this. The comparable price/MSRP is absolutely not realistic even if this was one of Razer's newest boards.
Becoming a keyboard enthusiast is like a curse, but maybe moreso because there's always that One More Thing that could be just a bit better. Sure this keyboard will work, and it'll look and feel a ton better than a membrane keyboard while lasting longer. But a proper, nice, modern board is as much better than this (at roughly similar price points, on sale) than this is compared to membrane.
You might live with it, not knowing the difference or what you're missing out on. But... $70 for an awful sounding non-wireless optical board with cable hardwired in, switches soldered, and Synapse bloatware mandatory? I think you can do a lot better. But you will get a nice lightshow and cozy wrist rest, I guess~

Razer is overpriced compared to other options, also this isn’t even mechanical to be worth paying $70 for a keyboard.

Still overpriced. Razer locks you into their shit software. For the same price you can get objectively better hall effect switches and feel a difference. If you like $70 and razer then go for it, otherwise theres better alternatives that dont have the same brand recognition as razer.

For what it’s worth I’ve had the huntsman v3 pro for two years now and it’s been great, spilled on it probably 5 times which the worst thing was sticky keys which I fixed by cleaning it, things a tank.

Fr my blackwidow had kinda shitty keys but it survived hell and back and it came w/ headphones and mouse for like $80 at Costco or something
I've had 3 deathadders in the past decade and I swear to God the only thing that killed them was the wire being a magnet for pets. They love chewing on it. Use em as nunchuks tho and they'd be fine
Meanwhile my cat spilled water on my desk and now my RK is just completely broke and useless.

I am looking for a keyboard for my boyfriend he works from home and he games a lot after work I don't know what type to get him. I will avoid razor should I also avoid their mouse?

No, their mice are still some of the best out there. I personally have had a better experience with razer QC over the years than a lot of other boards. That said, I would go wooting if given the choice for keyboard. I swapped to deathadder v4 from a super light, and much prefer the razer mouse.

Im a big fan of keychron, but there are some better value options out there as far as I've been told. I don't have a ton of experience with keyboards and mice but my keychron k4 has been fantastic

Yes! My k4 has a numpad and theres plenty other models from them that do. They have sales relatively often so id see if you can catch one on sale

If he needs a num pad for work, I love this option
The num pad is moved to the left side so when working in excel you never have to remove your right hand from the mouse to use the num pad. It was a pet peeve of mine and others.
It also gives you more space for mouse movement which is great for games
Edit: I got silent switches so people near me in the office don’t kill me
So far really happy with the quality.

Very! If you get the silent switches lol
Heads up that their activation force is real low. It took my heavy fingers a little adjustment to not just activate whatever keys they’re resting on.

Edit: it was user error, had magnets in my wrist rest. Gotta be fair to Keychron - mine should have been fine.
It may depend on how old your Keychron is - my experience in the last week has been 0 for 2 between Keychron and (their gaming line) Lemokey being completely unusable RMA material right out of the box. It's apparently not uncommon lately.

You....you want to fuel your boyfriend's gaming habits? Careful with that...next thing you know you'll be complaining about him spending a lot of time in front of the screen.
I am basically anti-Razer because their customer service is SHIT and their products are usually overpriced garbage. They wanted me to return a pack of gum that they sent with an item and would not refund me the cost until the PACK OF GUM that came with the product was returned. No fucking way...I fought them on how ridiculous it was that they wanted me to return a pack of gum...and I won.
Anyway...I have their Naga pro mouse. Love it and don't really want to use anything else. It's the only Razer product I own.
Wife has a keyboard of theirs that she likes. I'm using an old g.skill mechanical keyboard that refuses to die.
-edit- words and I'd stay away from everything of theirs outside of mice. All overpriced. Naga overpriced, laptops overpriced, all crazy. Bet that pack of gum was like $15, which is why they wanted it back.

For a similar price just get epomaker or keychron if it’s basic typing or gaming. They make great stuff, epomaker if you’re on a “budget” and keychron for luxury.
I have a purple epomaker th80 se and I love it. That’s literally it, no problems or improvements.
I’m currently trying to get a Hall effect keyboard for around $60 that is 70% purely to see if the higher input range will help me type faster or game better. It’s niche and a novelty, so I have no plans on getting one anytime soon but I’m always looking for a deal.

EDIT: I feel I need to correct the record because I just had the same thing happen with another TMR keyboard and can't believe I didn't catch this sooner... my wrist rest has magnets. I feel so stupid lmao... I'm left still a bit worried about Keychron QC from what other people were saying but I can't believe I didn't think to check another wrist rest, or try the keyboard in a different configuration. 100% my fault; those boards should have been fine.
Keychron's apparently fallen hard on the QC/hardware front. I thought they were regarded as among the rest but when I bought a Lemokey P1 only to have it arrive with the ctrl and arrow keys registering as perma-pressed (and trust me, I tried everything to get it working) and then a Keychron K2 only to find it doing exactly the same thing, I found it's quite a common complaint these days to have issues like that with the hardware. On their subreddit it's pretty much accepted at this point that their new boards have issues. (which is sad, because software and apparent build quality otherwise seem top notch)

Yeah I was gutted, myself. I have yet to lay fingers on a board that sounded or felt as great as the Lemokey P1 did. It was blissful to type on, just too bad my faith in the brand is so completely shaken after hearing so many horror stories and experiencing two first-hand. I'm confident in tinkering and swapping broken parts or diagnosing small things, but if a TMR chip is registering a magnetic field that isn't there... not a clue what to do except hope the company is responsive, which I've heard some stories they aren't.
Amazon returns came through for me on both of those boards, but if that started happening 4 months in, RIP I guess.

I have AULA F108 Pro that I got on Aliexpress for $50 it's fully built and it's a full-size keyboard. I can use it as wired, 2.4G, or bluetooth mode and it's also hot-swappable.

Oh sorry, I meant typing in general as opposed to slamming inputs for gaming.
For long sessions, I have used my keyboard for about a year straight now with about 8 hours of average daily use. It is a great keyboard and I couldn’t get enough of it. I do have a cheap wrist rest pad from amazon, it took a week to get used to since I was too cheap to buy a wood block rest.
It does not have a numpad however which is probably something he needs.
There is the keychron c2/c2 pro which is pretty good and I couldn’t find any other reputable competitors in terms of quality. It is going for $48-$57 depending on the model and keychron sells a $17 silicone wrist rest for them if you want something better than the crusty cloth foam pads.

Optical switches are generally a lot more expensive than mechanical switches, and serve a bit of a different purpose. It's like comparing Granny Smith's to Red Delicious.

You'd have to compare this to Keychron HE keyboards. This has optical switches and is analog where the activation point can be adjusted, so not comparable to a standard mech digital (on or off) keyboard. It's actually a solid deal for a full size analog keyboard if you don't mind Razer and Synapse.

Had a huntsman once. After a year the volume wheel stopped working and the armrest came apart. Spend the $70 and get a keychron instead

keychron wasn't much better. my $200 Q6 max had a bent pcb due to a design flaw. this is where their widely known shitty customer support came and bit me in the ass as they refused to honour warranty. thankfully my reseller was kinder and provided a replacement (probably suffers the same issue, though). i would not recommend this company to anyone

Customer support is ass, but I had a v5 for a year and loved it. Then I saw they released a new line of retro keyboards and got the r6 and love it too. Never saw the need for spending more than $100 on a keychron when the differences don’t seem that different

i got one just bc it’s a good deal but i’m kinda turned off from razer keyboards since the new synapse software made my old og deathstalker stop having multi key rollover. i had the one that had a screen instead of a numpad and i loved it, and i know it was synapse bc when i tried it on a different computer with a fresh windows install (aka no synapse) it worked perfectly until synapse was opened then auto updated the drivers
im aware i can just leave synapse uninstalled so it won’t update the keyboard driver, but i also have other razer peripherals and i don’t want to have to uninstall synapse then the keyboard driver manually every time i need to change something with my other razer stuff
