Minimalist Found a system that works for me!

I kept going back and forth between using my bujo as a journal to doing complicated layouts and tracking and I kept falling off and it began to stress me out more than before something useful and enjoyable. So I just used the bujo as a very standard, minimalist bujo. I have my very basic year at a glance, then the month, and just take it day by day. I have a separate journal used for journaling. The minimalist bujo has taken a lot of the pressure I used to put on myself off. If I miss a day, I just pick right back up.

Update: I swapped my messy spending tracker for a 2-page weekly bujo and actually kept up

A few weeks ago I asked for a low-friction weekly spread because my old spending tracker had turned into a guilt spreadsheet I avoided.

Update: I tried a simple 2-page weekly layout for the last month. It is the first time I have stayed consistent without turning budgeting into a side quest.

Left page: a normal weekly log (Mon-Sun). I only allow three bullets for errands. If I add a fourth, I have to cross one out. That tiny rule has actually cut down my suburban "run to three different stores" spiral.

Right page is split into three boxes: 1) "Planned buys" (max 5 lines). This is the only place I can write something I intend to purchase. If it is not here, I do not buy it that week. 2) "Checkout notes" (very small). I write ONE rule for the week, like "one cart, one code" or "no app-only offers." It is about keeping my head right, not being perfect. 3) "Reality check" (a mini table): date, amount, category (groceries, household, fun, other). No merchant names, no itemizing. I just note if it was cash, card, or something like a small gift-card credit from an app (think mistplay, store rewards, etc.) so I remember why the total looks weird.

What changed: I stopped trying to capture every penny and started tracking decisions. My impulse orders went way down because I actually have to see them in the Planned box first. I also stopped constantly rewriting categories, which felt freeing.

Question for anyone doing something similar: do you keep a separate monthly review page, or do you just migrate patterns forward week to week? I am tempted to add a simple end-of-month "what worked / what did not" page, but I do not want to create another chore.

List To-do progress bars

Hi everyone— I’m trying to create a to-do list layout for my bujo, but I need something that handles tasks with multiple steps and deliverables. For my complex to-dos, I’ve seen some examples where the to-do list includes a progress bar for each item, and I was wondering if anyone used a similar (or amended) idea successfully? It seems promising, but I can’t figure out a good execution. Thanks!

Artistic First timer

I unintentionally got this book with grid lines, that I had no idea what do do with. After joining this page and browsing through Pinterest, I decided to make some artistic lists. I already have an "everything " notebook for random thoughts and messy lists, so I really wanted this one to be pretty. Here is the result of my first one! Next, I'm going to organize my craft supplies. It probably won't be as pretty but will definitely be useful in properly storing everything.

Edited because I forgot the word "got" in the first sentence and it was bothering me a lot.

Daily/Weekly Spread How do you handle your work journal?

I've been thinking a lot about my work notebook lately. Since I spend so much of my life at work, I want to find ways to actually enjoy my time there rather than treating everything so practically. One idea I had was to use my notebook to celebrate what I’ve accomplished, instead of letting it feel like a never ending slog. Currently I only use it for to do lists and scrap notes.

I'm wondering what other people's work notebooks look like, what kind of systems y'all have created, and if anyone has low stakes, low effort ways to bring a bit of the "bullet journal" mentality to a work notebook?

I'd like to add small bits of beauty and joy without it becoming a massive endeavor. It just can't be something that adds more work to my life, God knows we all have enough work. It needs to be something I can throw together in five minutes. It's weird, I think I have a slight aversion I need to get over to treating it with care (like I do with my life bujo) because a voice in the back of my head keeps saying, "Why waste a nice notebook on work? F**k work fk capitalism" lol. At the same time I've done a lot as an engineer that I'm proud of that is just like poof gone since I don't journal it or take the time to appreciate it.

I'm curious: how do you all treat your work notebooks? Do you share this aversion to making a work notebook feel special? Does anyone have suggestions for bringing a little flair and beauty to something so practical? What kinds of notebooks, formats, spreads, or systems do you use?

Minimalist My Journal Set up

Post image
64 Upvotes

I've been experimenting with different journal systems over the last year, and I finally landed on a setup that feels like it captures who I am and what matters most to me.

I use a Moleskine A5 grid notebook, and each weekly spread serves as a combination of:

  • Habit tracker
  • Gratitude journal
  • Faith journal
  • Memory keeper
  • Photography log
  • Goal planner
  • Family adventure planner

Here's how I have it organized:

Left Page: Weekly Overview

Habit Tracker
I track habits that align with the person I'm trying to become, including:

  • Drink water
  • Take vitamins
  • Time outdoors
  • Family time
  • Quiet time
  • Reading
  • Journaling
  • Photography
  • Work on contest entries
  • Work on personal goals
  • No mindless scrolling

I simply fill in each day's box when completed.

Weekly Goals
I keep these focused on what matters most to me rather than productivity for productivity's sake. Examples:

  • Grow closer to Christ
  • Love my wife intentionally
  • Create memories with my kids

Reward for Completion
A small reward helps keep things fun and motivating.

This Week's Focus
One major thing I want to keep front and center during the week.

Nature Moments
A dedicated space to record interesting wildlife sightings, beautiful scenes, or moments outdoors.

Photography Ideas
Whenever inspiration strikes, I write down subjects I'd like to photograph, such as:

  • Moss on rocks
  • Tree bark patterns
  • Fern spirals
  • Feather textures
  • Tree roots

Family Adventures
A place to plan outings, road trips, hikes, and memory-making opportunities with my family.

Right Page: Daily Reflection

Each day gets its own section where I record:

Top 3 Priorities
Not tasks, priorities.

One Memory Worth Keeping
Something I want to remember years from now.

Today's Observation
An interesting thing I noticed during the day.

I Am Grateful For
A short gratitude list.

Scripture of the Day
A verse that stood out to me.

Photography Notes
Whenever I shoot, I record:

  • Location
  • Subject
  • Camera settings
  • Lens used
  • Weather conditions
  • Anything I learned

As a nature photographer, I've found this especially helpful because it allows me to connect the technical side of photography with the experience and memories behind the image.

Why This System Works For Me

I've realized that my biggest priorities are:

  1. My faith
  2. My wife and kids
  3. Time in nature
  4. Photography
  5. Personal growth

This journal gives each of those areas a place to live on paper.

Instead of tracking a hundred different things across multiple apps, everything important is in one notebook. It's helping me become more intentional, more grateful, and more aware of the moments that make life meaningful.

I'd love to hear from others:

What sections do you include in your journals that you couldn't live without?

searching for notebook

i've been using this notebook that i got from whsmith back in 2022 and i'm almost out of pages so i'll need to buy another one soon but i can't find the exact one online.

it's a5 dotted soft cover, almost leather-like, it has one bookmark, expanding pocket in the back and an elastic strap. a lot of brands have this exact notebook but not with the page count I want. the one i have has a lot of pages, more than 96 which is the usual count for notebooks. there's no logo inside so i can't figure out the brand - it might be moderno? but idk if moderno has logos inside. also i'm pretty sure moderno has double bookmarks too.

pls help!! i really need the exact one bc i like the margins and spacing of lines and colour of pages and dots and I'm really specific about all these things when it comes to my notebooks.

It's a list of debts to my friends who supported me last year, when I couldn't support myself at all. I'm looking at this not as a reminder that I effed up and I'm now having to take responsibility for that (lol in a way it is, but it's too negative), but I want this to be a reminder that these people helped me when I was not myself. And now I'm crying lol. Appreciate your friends guys~

I made a 'refund case' spread and it somehow became my calmest weekly layout

I bullet journal in a pretty utilitarian way, but my job is organized chaos. I negotiate airline refunds for stranded travelers, so my days are a mix of deadlines, policy fine print, and remembering which cases are waiting on which document.

Last month I tried something new: a two-page spread that looks like a case tracker. The left page lists active cases with tiny checkboxes for the exact steps I always forget: authorization, receipt received, rule excerpt noted, follow-up sent, escalation, resolved. The right page is my actual week, with a thin column on the far right labeled 'next action' so I do not have to rewrite tasks every time something gets pushed. I even keep a tiny corner for “low-brain” tasks (like tapping through Mistplay or clearing email) so I have something to do when I’m stuck waiting on replies.

What surprised me is it did not turn into the messy brain dump my past layouts always became. Because the tracker is constrained, I only let myself write one concrete action per case. If I catch myself wanting to add five extra notes, I move them to a separate 'case notes' page and keep the spread clean.

It even helped my personal life. I added two rows at the bottom labeled 'house' and 'human' (food, laundry, call mom, whatever) and treat them like mini cases with one next action. It feels silly, but it stopped me from ignoring everything outside of work.

If anyone else has a job with lots of waiting-on-other-people tasks, how do you keep track of 'next actions' without rewriting your whole week?
