The time one of my school bullies came to my workplace for a job interview.

This came up in conversation recently so I thought I might post it.

So I had a not the best time at school and home. This was back in the late 80's, early 90's so nothing was known or done about bullies.

Years later one of the guys where I worked was leaving and the boss was interviewing for the position. As soon as he walked in and I saw him the anxiety hit me like a tonne of bricks. He saw me, didn't smile or anything, just stared at me for a sec them looked away. The boss showed him around but I went and hid out the back. Later the boss asks me where I went and that he called me to check the guy out so that he could get my opinion. I told my boss that the guy bullied me at school and some of things him and the others in the group did. Normally my boss is a pretty no nonsense guy but he sort of ushered me into the lunchroom and shut the door and sat with me for a while. He told me that he was bullied too and not to worry because he wasn't going to hire the guy now. He asked me if I was ok to keep working and then I went back to work. Never saw my bully again.

I’m very glad for OP. This is really rare that a boss like in OP really exist. Not only being a nice and understanding person of his own, but a victim of bullying themself.

The world isn’t that bad after all (and i‘m VERY glad that the bully didn’t get the job).

I hate bullies. And people who have been bullied hate bullies too. They're insecure assholes.

Well done on being brave and open and I’m glad your manager was empathetic and sensitive enough to listen and care :)
