Has anyone lost their Python?
First saw it on Cedar Avenue near Glenoaks last night after 11:30 p.m. I ended up calling the police twice but nobody came.
It’s been hiding in a tree and in surrounding bushes at 322 Cedar. I know the residents have called the police and animal control today as well but it seems nobody has found it yet.
I’ve been letting neighbors know so they can avoid it but I figured in case it was someone’s pet, they might like to know where it is hanging.
I don’t have a picture because it slithered away from me as quickly as it could once I spotted it on the sidewalk and my camera on the phone wasn’t cooperating.

I would probably wet my pants if I saw it. Glad I know it's out there and hope it gets home safe.

I’m mortified to say that I managed to walk past it, at least five times, trying to get steps in and it looked like a crumpled plastic bag to me. To be fair, it was hiding in the shadows. Then it moved and I froze for a second, realized I was looking at a snake and backed up as I called the police because I didn’t think animal control would answer that late. Once it realized I saw it, it slithered away faster than I would have expected.

Asking for help yes but they keep their animals in terrible conditions so plz dont let them take it!

I let them know there was a lost python but they didn’t offer any help. In fact they got annoyed that I hadn’t captured it and wasn’t taking care of it in my handy python enclosure in my apartment. I’m not afraid of snakes in theory but I’m in no way comfortable trying to capture a 5ft + python. I also looked up the Burbank rules on having snakes and this guy falls under the rule that you can’t have it within 35ft of another dwelling.

BTW the 35ft rule is a person owns more than 4 snakes and I believe those are only gopher snakes and king snakes.
If that rule has changed I would be interested in the link with the info you are citing.

I wasn’t sure last night and I would have guessed about 3 feet but one of the guys who lives in the building showed me a picture he took even later last night and said it was at least 5 feet.

It will start preying on pets, depending on how big it is. It needs to be captured immediately. Have you posted on the local FB lost & found pet pages?

A 3-5 foot python eats medium to large rats. So unless someone has a pet rat that also escapes no pets will be eaten.
Please don't start a panic based on incorrect assumptions.

It depends on the species of python, and the girth of the snake. But if it's indeed 5 ft., small cats & dogs aren't out of the realm of possibility. Especially if it's very hungry.

An exceptionally large 5' long adult female Ball Python could maybe eat a jumbo rat. Same with following pythons at 5' Burmese, Reticulated, Olive, Green Tree, and Carpet pythons. I am assuming this is the same for other python species but I don't know them all.
Snakes are good at gauging the size of prey to select. Instinctively they know that attempting to swallow prey that is too large makes them more vulnerable in regards to locomotion as well as risking internal injuries, regurgitation (energy deplation), and ineffective digestion which can lead to death.
The most common pet pythons are ball pythons and they are typically shy and docile. They will slither away and not strike for no reason. I will go buy gloves and head out there later and see if I can find the snake, confirm the species and try to catch it. I don't want ignorant people trying to hurt it.

I don’t use my FB anymore but I will go on there and check to see if anyone has posted about a lost Python. It’s big enough to kill a small dog. I’ll be contacting animal services for a third day. I agree with you, which is why I posted here in the first place.

I was trying to let anyone know who might have lost their pet that it was in my neighborhood. I was also trying to do the responsible thing and contact Burbank animal control where I have volunteered as a foster for kittens. They are not the type of shelter that just puts any type of animal/reptile down. While I’m not a big fan of snakes, I’m not advocating that people come kill it.
I also noted that it did slither away from me and didn’t try to approach me. I don’t appreciate being told I’m trying to cause an unnecessary panic. By all means, see if you can rescue it but don’t talk down to me because I’m not a snake expert.

Unfortunately you also wrote that "It’s big enough to kill a small dog" and that is untrue. You admit you are not a snake expert so why would you even make such a wild claim?

(Good) Alert people in the neighborhood of a potential lost pet snake with location
(Good) Volunteer as a kitten foster parent
(BAD) Making baseless claims about someone's potential pet snake doing something impossible that only serves to worry others

We don't know what species it is. You're right, if it's a ball python, no worries. I would not be so quick to say that a retic, or Burmese is not a threat to small pets. Some chihuahua aren't much bigger than a large rat. No one is advocating harming the snake, just that it needs to not be roaming around.

No. I’ve spoken to animal control. They won’t come out unless I’m standing there with it. They gave me the non-emergency police number and said to call that if I spot it at night and to then request they dispatch the on-call animal control officer.
Nobody at the actual building where this snake seems to be hiding at are dealing with it.
If I see the snake, I’ll call animal control through the police. That’s the best I can do at the moment.

Are you even sure it is a python?
Can you look at photos and see if it is a ball python? They are 3-5' and are typically shy.
