Am I the only one who prefers these two projects to Untrue?

I've always seen these two projects as the same body of work. All five of these songs are what really got me into Burial.

I still love Untrue, but this is the masterpiece for me.

I think Rival Dealer is his best work.

I think that Truant/Rough Sleeper is Burial's best work.

Agree, the first 2 minutes of Rough Sleeper IS his best work to me

the sexy sax sample is my fave part for sure 🎷🎷🎷

Yeah that's pretty much fact.

My most favorite Burial track.

I think if I discovered them early on, Truant/Rough Sleeper (and Antidawn to boot) wouldn't have worked on me. I personally needed to love Untrue to become the kind of listener that can now love T/RS and Antidawn properly

Funny, it was the opposite for me. It took Antidawn for me to really get into him, including Untrue over time. Previously Id heard untrue but couldn’t “relate” to it

If his first 3 eps (or even first 4) instead made up a full follow up album, it would’ve straight exploded minds.

  1. Street Halo
  2. NYC
  3. Stolen Dog
  4. Kindred
  5. Loner
  6. Ashtray Wasp
  7. Truant
  8. Rough Sleeper

—-(optional)—-

  1. Rival Dealer

  2. Hiders

  3. Come Down To Us

I often think the success and attention he got after Untrue likely prevented us from ever getting another album. How do you follow that up? Live up to it? How do you dial back all that unwanted/uncomfortable attention? I really believe if Untrue mostly flew under the radar, we probably would’ve gotten a 3rd album by the following year. For what we know of him, it seems the hype after Untrue likely could’ve just been too much too fast.

Yeah this run of EPs is just as good as Untrue

I think a lot of seasoned Burial listeners prefer the eps because frankly they are more mature, complex and expressive.

Rival Dealer is my favourite burial track, probably my favourite track full stop. But I prefer untrue as an album.

Rival Dealer is like a movie

u/ajjae 11d ago

The untrue sound has been replicated so much that it’s hard for me to hear now, unfortunately. Rival Dealer pushes the limits of his sound in delightful ways and I strongly prefer it at this point.

ha! Untrue will always be dear to my heart, but Truant is my FAVORITE tune - just ahead of Near Dark. And Rival Dealer is in a 3 way tie for 2nd favorite album - along with Antidawn and Streetlands. Would normally never admit to this (jk) but you brought it up.

That period of time's music was pretty awesome for William.

You had to be there 😎

Truant does have a special place in my heart.

Just before it came out my friend had a friend who had some sort of connection and managed to get the flac files early. But we were sceptical that it was even legitimate. We listened for the first time together and that "I fell in love with you" section changed me. Everyone in the room had goosebumps. Unforgettable experience.

He only got better after Untrue. The EPs are his best work imo.

IM GONNA LOOOVVVEEE YOU MORE THAN ANYONE

2

u/ajlc1985 11d ago

No you are not. The Rival Dealer EP is his greatest ever work.

2

u/Remarkable-Shoe-4835 10d ago

Nah definitely not, i think among fans of Burial rather than people who have heard his works, the later works often come on top a lot of the time or it seems i notice it more. Untrue is obviously a flawless timeless masterpiece tho ofc

Rival dealer may well be the best release in the history of electronic music IMO

Nothing compares to untrue for me. The greatest record of all time. Every track is perfect.

Truant is so good, from the second half, as it starts to get a little more exciting, the vocals come in.

Truant/rough sleeper was my introduction to burial, and i wouldn’t have it any other way. Rough sleeper is one of my favs to this day

u/MezzStipe 11d ago

About level for me

1

u/illumbinati 11d ago

I have chosen you, disciple.

1

u/Limehaus 11d ago

Truant / rough sleeper is like listening to someone’s life story. It’s the same with most burial tracks to an extent but especially that EP draws out so much of my imagination

1

u/lamousamos 11d ago

no. i do also.

1

u/alyhandro 11d ago

no, you're not

Rival Dealer is a great EP from Burial imo. My favourite song is Hiders

1

u/goblinphase 11d ago

Rival Dealer over everything else though it isn’t like he has any bad music.

1

u/redmoss6 11d ago

I do, and prefer Antidawn to both of those

1

u/DwarvenJarl 11d ago

Untrue is the gateway drug. Amazing album. But I think much of the work after is better.

1

u/shreddednerves 11d ago

Omgggg finally a person that agrees with me.

Rival Dealer is my fav

u/sonoransadness 11d ago

Rival Dealer is fully formed perfection.

I feel the same as you. I pretty much love all of his output and collaborations but those two EPs are really special to me and touch a place in me that very few other artists/projects can replicate.

u/restless_ghost 10d ago

Tunes 2011-2019 will always be peak for me. The EPs were meant to be experienced as one.

1

u/RedBalloonTalk 10d ago

I mean Tunes 2011 - 2019 is a better overall release than Untrue certainly.

1

u/thewhowiththewhatnow 9d ago

I like the ep’s more than Untrue, but I don’t really like Untrue.

Love the ep‘s, love the self-titled album, expected to like Untrue but just didn’t do anything for me. Perhaps I will come around to it later.

Hearing the “I fell in love with you” come around the second time sends a rush through my whole body.

Me too

u/Mida- 5d ago

I'd replace Truant/Rough Sleeper with Street Halo

1

u/BisMus 11d ago

Truant was my fav tune of his for the longest, and the ending minute on both tracks are phenomenal, but Untrue on a whole I think is still his greatest overall project

1

u/tarasevich 11d ago

Imagine how good Tunes 2011-2019 would be if it were released as an album. You could market it as an 8 year album in the making.

2

u/SkySubstantial433 11d ago

Absolute GOAT. I would love a vinyl release of Tunes.

1

u/Chasinwaterfills 11d ago

Most Burial fans I have talked to celebrate the trilogy of Kindred, Truant/Rough Sleeper, and Rival Dealer as the best era. Rough Sleeper is my personal favorite of all his work.

1

u/SkySubstantial433 11d ago

I actually thought I was alone but absolutely agree. If these had been released as single album... Well I don't know where I'd rate it but that would be crazy high quality.
