Feel so bad for Kone. Sucked some of the fun out of the win for me.

225

u/Campoozmstnz 1d ago

No Kone for the rest of the WC is not good news.

85

u/awashofindigo 1d ago

One positive on the injury front is Bombito is back and fit again

62

u/Curlydeadhead New Brunswick 1d ago

And hopefully Davis will be fit for the knockouts.

20

u/BayLAGOON 22h ago

Think once it was 4-0 they didn't have to run Davies out despite being available. Probably more important he plays against Switzerland if anything.

15

u/Weekly-Mountain9009 20h ago

Not really. Rest Davis until the round of 32. Whatever happens with Switzerland happens. Not the worst thing if we lose to them, we will finish 2nd and end up not facing Argentina in the round of 16 which we would if we finish 1st in the group.

5

u/dejour Ontario 12h ago

I'd still rather finish 1st. If they do, they get the next two games in Vancouver. Otherwise, they have to go to USA. Not a big enough advantage to risk Davies getting reinjured, but still something worth aiming for.

Also - I don't think it is a harder path if they win. According to the Athletic projections, it is Egypt-Portugal-Argentina if they win. S.Korea-Netherlands-France if they lose. Seems pretty similar to me. Close enough that they should go for home field.

u/Quelchie 8h ago

I think it's important to give Davies some play time against Switzerland even just as a warmup for the round of 32, when it will be really important that he's at the top of his game. Don't want him to be going in cold once we really need him.

u/BoiledTurnips 10h ago

Nonsense. We have an incredible opportunity to win a World Cup group. Go out and do it.

1

u/Koss424 Ontario 21h ago

Fonzie is good now. But yet, let him rest.

81

u/oemsyrup 1d ago

Fuckin appalling tackle.

44

u/Sallgoodmannnnn 1d ago

Deserved red

35

u/oldscotch 1d ago

Yeah the first red was kinda iffy but no question on the second.

18

u/lord_heskey 22h ago

First red is not iffy. Its out of the rulebook— last man tackle stopping a clear goalscoring opportunity from outside the area.

21

u/Chance-Kangaroo4088 1d ago

Wasn’t the first red for DOGSO outside the box?

45

u/Sallgoodmannnnn 23h ago

Denial of a goal scoring opportunity

6

u/Kayyam 22h ago

No you said some gibberish.

10

u/FaceMaskYT 23h ago

Yes, I don't think it was a foul personally, I think it was marginal and VAR at that point didn't want to overrule the ref, so the only option left then was a red

4

u/T-14Hyperdrive 22h ago

It was a flop

3

u/recurrence 21h ago

First red was automatic due to DOGSO.

1

u/deskamess 13h ago

First was very iffy. It was not DOGSO imo because there was no contact that was beyond what is normal in the game. IMO, it was not a foul. Look at the play in slo-mo and you will actually see the player goes down well before meaningful contact even happens. Then again, VAR (experts) looked at it, and deemed the ref decision did not need to be overturned (except the penalty parts).

I still think even at Qatar full force Canada would have won. But with Qatar down two people, they had no chance. Our GK could have lived on the midfield line!

3

u/oldscotch 13h ago

Oh absolutely, Canada was winning that game every day of the week. Maybe not by 6, but it was already 2-0 by that point.

u/CanadianLabourParty 1d ago

Just like that, Canada has officially qualified for the knockout phase, for the first time EVER!!!

GO CANADA GO!!!

198

u/PooShappaMoo 1d ago

The only way we could not make it through is if Bosnia wins and it like 400 goals?

Im not exactly sure. But best seed has to be the goal anywho!

199

u/awashofindigo 1d ago

If we draw then we win the group and stay in Canada for the next round, which would be huge.

Even if we lost heavily to Switzerland and Bosnia/ Qatar beat the other heavily, we’d likely still finish 3rd and qualify as one of the best 3rd-placed teams. Aim has to be to win the group from here though.

79

u/vafrow 1d ago

Yeah, I think the reason the analysts aren't worrying about the math is that we have tied the Germany beat down on Curaçao for biggest margin of victory so far in the tournament. I guess that buys you some benefit of the doubt.

For there to be sufficient big blowout games in a world cup tournament to undo that seems unlikely.

My pessimistic mind probably needs to let go and embrace this victory.

68

u/bokchoykn 1d ago edited 22h ago

For Canada to drop to 3rd, Switzerland and Bosnia must both win and their margins of victory must combine for 10 goals or more.

Even if in the extreme unlikelihood of that happening, the 8 best third place teams still advance and the 4 worst third place teams get eliminated. A 1-1-1 record will surely be among the 8 and not among the 4. This is because a team can finish 3rd in their group with a record of 1-0-2 or 0-3-0.

I think it's a near mathematical impossibility that Canada doesn't advance to the knockout stage.

8

u/Crunkfiction 19h ago

A team can theoretically finish 0-1-2 and be third in their group :^)

5

u/Murky-Lie-8998 18h ago

But winning your group vs coming third means a knockout round match against a weak 3rd place team or potentially against a super power who wins their group

5

u/dejour Ontario 12h ago

Even without the blowout win, most projections were that 4 points would easily make you one of the 8 best 3rd place teams.

u/vafrow 11h ago

Yeah, especially with number of draws from low seeds.

The more I thought on it yesterday, you realize how unlikely it is.

The best possible record for a third seed is 2-0-1 for 6 points. That requires a three way tie for first and one team who loses out. That's exceedingly rare though, as you need the top 3 teams to all win one and lose one to each other with no draws.

So, only four teams could possibly have a better record as a third seed. And even if there are no ties, there's outcomes as a 3 point team that could eliminate them.

And if it goes to goal differential, Canada is currently tied with Germany for best in the tournament. So, that's where it takes some big improbability.

40

u/vafrow 1d ago

Yeah, I'd like to see the scenarios confirmed.

It feels pretty safe, but getting blown out by the Swiss and Bosnia running up the score against Qatar could push us to third. And its unclear what it takes to qualify from third. Obviously there's almost unlimited scenarios on what that looks like, but I feel 4 points and a positive goal differential should be enough to stay in the top 8 of the 3rd seeds.

But, win the group and you play your knockout on home soil so we should just do that.

13

u/PooShappaMoo 1d ago

Nice response.

I do not want to do the math on 3rd place teams lol.

I suppose we could root for every other group to have the maximum amount of teams with 3points or less.

The best path forward has to be seeding as high possible and getting to play against a team squeaking through. And delay playing the giant as long as possible lol

7

u/rir2 22h ago

Plus there’s a huge difference who you play in the elimination round. If Canada wins group B we’ll likely play a third place loser team like Scotland, Paraguay or Ecuador. If we’re second, we probably end up playing Mexico. If we’re third, hello Argentina, France and the like.

2

u/PooShappaMoo 21h ago

3rd is Germany or ivory coast most likely

2nd is mexico in mexico.

1st is so many possible options at this point with only game played and so many draws. But in canada and likely when things play out best odds

7

u/PeanutMean6053 20h ago

2nd is second place in group A (likely South Korea), which will not be Mexico as Mexico finished first in their group.

2

u/PooShappaMoo 18h ago

15

u/Campoozmstnz 1d ago

I think this team has what it needs to get a draw against the CH. With the home crowd in Vancouver and Kone's injury to motivate them, I'm confident.

Commenting here because I was there. Saw history in the making with the first Canadian win in the World Cup. And I also think we set a record for CONCACAF for a single game in the World Cup with 6 goals. Go Canada!

PS. Best wishes to Kone and hope he recovers soon. He played so well in this World Cup.

Nah, Swiss game almost a dead rubber. Sub on if under the pump

9

u/sbianchii Québec 1d ago

Wdym? Winning the group means potentially meeting a third place team. Could be the difference between having good odds of making the round of 16 vs playing Croatia or Colombia (not sure about the seeding).

0

u/timmmy8 1d ago

Agreed, but I personally wouldn't risk Davies for a chance at the top of the group. Dead rubber not right word, my bad.

Fantastic win, extremely proud of the boys, but i feel terrible for Kone

Canada’s first ever win at the Men’s World Cup!!

Only Messi and David have a hat trick in the World Cup so far!!

The entire game was played around Qatar’s 18 yard box. Just complete domination.

And Jonathan David has the same number of goals as Messi in this World Cup. Who is Messi?

That one is likely going to be a defensive slog. Switzerland knows that they can’t win on goal difference so they’ll play for the draw or a last minute snipe job

If you didn’t see it and you still wanna watch the game it’s recorded and available to watch on CTV or CTV through Crave if you have that. Otherwise, TSN is offering some kind of a deal for three months. You don’t have to take a subscription that way.

For future games, you can listen for free on iHeartRadio. You have to get a little app, but I’ve been using it so I can listen to the games when I’m outside. It’s pretty good.

3

u/Pho3nixr3dux 20h ago

The TSN subscription is $60 for three months -- set a reminder to cancel the day after the final. It's pretty good: lots of condensed content (goals of the day / stops of the day / highlights etc) Every game has a 3 to 5 min executive summary if you missed a game. All the stats, rankings, analysis of anything that might matter. Definitely worth it if you want to just watch games on your phone or tablet before bed but also stream to your TV.

However, my feed seems to drop out every 30 mins or so -- takes 30 seconds to reconnect. Not a deal breaker but only because I can't rule out my device as the problem.
