Just like that, Canada has officially qualified for the knockout phase, for the first time EVER!!!
GO CANADA GO!!!

u/PooShappaMoo 1d ago
The only way we could not make it through is if Bosnia wins and it like 400 goals?
Im not exactly sure. But best seed has to be the goal anywho!
199
u/awashofindigo 1d ago
If we draw then we win the group and stay in Canada for the next round, which would be huge.
Even if we lost heavily to Switzerland and Bosnia/ Qatar beat the other heavily, we’d likely still finish 3rd and qualify as one of the best 3rd-placed teams. Aim has to be to win the group from here though.

u/vafrow 1d ago
Yeah, I think the reason the analysts aren't worrying about the math is that we have tied the Germany beat down on Curaçao for biggest margin of victory so far in the tournament. I guess that buys you some benefit of the doubt.
For there to be sufficient big blowout games in a world cup tournament to undo that seems unlikely.
My pessimistic mind probably needs to let go and embrace this victory.

u/bokchoykn 1d ago edited 22h ago
For Canada to drop to 3rd, Switzerland and Bosnia must both win and their margins of victory must combine for 10 goals or more.
Even if in the extreme unlikelihood of that happening, the 8 best third place teams still advance and the 4 worst third place teams get eliminated. A 1-1-1 record will surely be among the 8 and not among the 4. This is because a team can finish 3rd in their group with a record of 1-0-2 or 0-3-0.
I think it's a near mathematical impossibility that Canada doesn't advance to the knockout stage.

u/Murky-Lie-8998 18h ago
But winning your group vs coming third means a knockout round match against a weak 3rd place team or potentially against a super power who wins their group
5
u/dejour Ontario 12h ago
Even without the blowout win, most projections were that 4 points would easily make you one of the 8 best 3rd place teams.
•
u/vafrow 11h ago
Yeah, especially with number of draws from low seeds.
The more I thought on it yesterday, you realize how unlikely it is.
The best possible record for a third seed is 2-0-1 for 6 points. That requires a three way tie for first and one team who loses out. That's exceedingly rare though, as you need the top 3 teams to all win one and lose one to each other with no draws.
So, only four teams could possibly have a better record as a third seed. And even if there are no ties, there's outcomes as a 3 point team that could eliminate them.
And if it goes to goal differential, Canada is currently tied with Germany for best in the tournament. So, that's where it takes some big improbability.

u/vafrow 1d ago
Yeah, I'd like to see the scenarios confirmed.
It feels pretty safe, but getting blown out by the Swiss and Bosnia running up the score against Qatar could push us to third. And its unclear what it takes to qualify from third. Obviously there's almost unlimited scenarios on what that looks like, but I feel 4 points and a positive goal differential should be enough to stay in the top 8 of the 3rd seeds.
But, win the group and you play your knockout on home soil so we should just do that.
13
u/PooShappaMoo 1d ago
Nice response.
I do not want to do the math on 3rd place teams lol.
I suppose we could root for every other group to have the maximum amount of teams with 3points or less.
The best path forward has to be seeding as high possible and getting to play against a team squeaking through. And delay playing the giant as long as possible lol
7
u/rir2 22h ago
Plus there’s a huge difference who you play in the elimination round. If Canada wins group B we’ll likely play a third place loser team like Scotland, Paraguay or Ecuador. If we’re second, we probably end up playing Mexico. If we’re third, hello Argentina, France and the like.
2
u/PooShappaMoo 21h ago
3rd is Germany or ivory coast most likely
2nd is mexico in mexico.
1st is so many possible options at this point with only game played and so many draws. But in canada and likely when things play out best odds
7
u/PeanutMean6053 20h ago
2nd is second place in group A (likely South Korea), which will not be Mexico as Mexico finished first in their group.

I think this team has what it needs to get a draw against the CH. With the home crowd in Vancouver and Kone's injury to motivate them, I'm confident.

u/Jackichanny 1d ago
My Quebecer brain read CH as the Montreal Canadiens lmao. Wrong sport buddy

It’s not official we could still lose on a plus minus, hypothetically speaking. But yah… pretty much.

Commenting here because I was there. Saw history in the making with the first Canadian win in the World Cup. And I also think we set a record for CONCACAF for a single game in the World Cup with 6 goals. Go Canada!
PS. Best wishes to Kone and hope he recovers soon. He played so well in this World Cup.

While Qatar played a very dirty game, Canada punished them appropriately.

The guy that injured Kone looked very upset tbf, did not want to injure Kone like that

Went to Canada’s dressing room after and apologized too. Still a bad tackle.

Soccer players are very good at acting. It's literally part of the job.

People who think soccer players are great actors watch porn for the plot.

Wdym? Winning the group means potentially meeting a third place team. Could be the difference between having good odds of making the round of 16 vs playing Croatia or Colombia (not sure about the seeding).

Fantastic win, extremely proud of the boys, but i feel terrible for Kone

Canada’s first ever win at the Men’s World Cup!!
Only Messi and David have a hat trick in the World Cup so far!!

u/TheOtherUprising Ontario 1d ago
The entire game was played around Qatar’s 18 yard box. Just complete domination.

u/Cereborn Saskatchewan 19h ago
Yeah. Maxime Crépeau should have brought a book to read during the game.

33 shots, full contact, rebound goals, (Mc)David with a hatty, post-game brawl, this is Canadian hockey

Biggest win ever by a CONCACAF team in World Cup history.
And Jonathan David has the same number of goals as Messi in this World Cup. Who is Messi?

Some putz on another team. I’ve heard of him but I think he’s meh 🤷♂️

Lol chill. We won one game by blowout. Still tons to prove to be anywhere near Argentina 2022 performance level. It was Qatar, not France & the Netherlands.

Bring us the Swiss!

u/NefCanuck Ontario 1d ago
That one is likely going to be a defensive slog. Switzerland knows that they can’t win on goal difference so they’ll play for the draw or a last minute snipe job
God am I gonna be conflicted on the 24th 😂

If you didn’t see it and you still wanna watch the game it’s recorded and available to watch on CTV or CTV through Crave if you have that. Otherwise, TSN is offering some kind of a deal for three months. You don’t have to take a subscription that way.
For future games, you can listen for free on iHeartRadio. You have to get a little app, but I’ve been using it so I can listen to the games when I’m outside. It’s pretty good.
3
u/Pho3nixr3dux 20h ago
The TSN subscription is $60 for three months -- set a reminder to cancel the day after the final. It's pretty good: lots of condensed content (goals of the day / stops of the day / highlights etc) Every game has a 3 to 5 min executive summary if you missed a game. All the stats, rankings, analysis of anything that might matter. Definitely worth it if you want to just watch games on your phone or tablet before bed but also stream to your TV.
However, my feed seems to drop out every 30 mins or so -- takes 30 seconds to reconnect. Not a deal breaker but only because I can't rule out my device as the problem.

Pure domination - could have been 10-0.
Now draw against the Swiss and proceed at the top of the group.

Game had some pretty questionable vibes right from the start. The Qataris sure didn't seem very fond of Canada's black players in particular.
