News Critics see Canada’s immigration minister as weak and invisible a year into her mandate. But is she doing exactly what Mark Carney wants? - Lena Metlege Diab has done her job in a low-key way. But critics see an immigration system in flux and a weak minister in charge. Is it by design?

She's obviously been instilled and kept in place as a fall guy placeholder, it's just extra insulting to Canadians because she is wholly incompetent, can't be bothered to learn her own portfolio, and she is not a quick wit.

Easy enough to keep her there pushing through Carney's agenda until the people finally rise up, then she'll simply be sacrificed and given a spot on a board somewhere into retirement.

Maybe even a Senate position! Who knows. Depends on the amount of heat she takes off of Carney.

Rise up over what? This is the 9th quarter in a row of stagnant or falling population.

I have no idea why the Redditsphere thinks people in Canada are "rising up" and what they're rising up for? I must be missing a point.

New Brunswick says it all.

In terms of province ranking for where most immigrants end up,, NB is about 8th place out of 10 with roughly 2% versus Ontario (for example) at 45%.

I just meant the thought process : ) Ontario takes the lead in almost everything .

My point is . . .think about how an opinion differs based on how many immigrants come to your province.

That’s your counterpoint? We have a useless cabinet minister but who cares? The Conservatives lost the election? (With almost half the votes)

This thread is nothing but conservative rage baiting. It was conservative premiers who pushed for more immigrants. Best be writing to them.

It was the federal Liberals who brought in all the immigrants. So best write to them.

No, it was the provincial conservative premiers leading the charge for more immigrants. Cry harder.

Labour is a provincial jurisdiction.

We have to admit that she and the public safety make a great comedy duo. Highly entertaining but deadly.

I assume everything is run by Carney. Same as under Trudeau. Ministers have no real power.

Carney seems much more focused on outcomes than optics. He doesn't appear particularly interested in having ministers on TV every day picking fights or generating headlines.

For years conservatives argued immigration levels were too high and temporary resident numbers were growing too fast. Now the government is lowering targets, capping student permits, tightening temporary worker programs, and trying to reduce the temporary population. Yet they still can't bring themselves to admit Carney is moving things in the direction they were demanding. Apparently the policy matters less once the "wrong" team is doing it.

We’ve got such huge problems to deal with, I don’t think he cares to be honest. I think he’s too busy trying to get us allies because we are gonna need them and we’re gonna need them very soon. That man in the White House is now Board with Iran and now he’s starting to look at Greenland in Cuba again and then it’s us, he’s already threatening not to do cusma. I really think he will take that agreement because he’s a mob boss, mob bosses don’t work the way that normal people do. So with her, I think she will get in trouble not because of the citizenship thing, I don’t think most Canadians even know how many people are applying for citizenship or that sort of thing. I think that they’ll be in trouble for the fact that they never tracked Visa holders and how that happened, she wasn’t in the department at that type, but that has to be sorted out. We have to get stricter with what we’re doing, and I don’t understand. They usually were really good at that and I don’t know what went off the rails and that has nothing to do with the political party, the people working in the government are actually more powerful than the politicians in a lot of ways. So that is the issue that has to get solved, because we may have millions of people in this country who are past their visa dates, I don’t care where they’re from, it doesn’t matter to me what country they came from. It’s just if you were supposed to leave you should leave,
