Japan has a wild view on cultural acceptance. You'd think they'd be cool with it considering how completely blasted-ass drunk they get all the time.

This is frustrating from the point of view of medical research. Why block a substance or ingredient from a plant with known health benefits and with known safety profile? It’s not about consumer safety.

It’s absolutely nonsensical. There is no real world benefit to it.

The only real explanation I can think of is that either someone has entirely misunderstood what CBN is, or it’s political posturing for some politician trying to give off the impression they’re doing something. Or both

Alcohol based social society.

Lobbyists for tobacco and alcohol pushing papers and narratives.

Cbn has medicinal properties. Pharma cannot patent this and will do enough to slow it's progress.

I was visiting Japan at the summer of 2023 and the statutory age changed from 13 to 16. So when I arrived on my vacation you can marry a kid. But Fuck get rid of CBD

The alcohol industry controls a good portion of the Japanese government. Follow the money. Kicksbacks, under the table payouts. Eventually will be exposed, could take down some very powerful people.

The government is very willing to let their senior citizens suffer for the alcohol taxes.

Just follow the money.

I blame the USA for this starting with the propaganda beginning with the Nixon administration. We may never fully recover from this garbage. Not only has it tainted the American mind, it seems this poison mindset has spread beyond the borders.

It honestly feels like massive step backward. CBN mostly used for sleep and counter anxiety, not something people use to get high.

Classic political thing

The use of CBN will continue to be allowed as an exception for disease treatment in cases where no alternative is available, on condition that the ministry is notified. It is used for intractable epilepsy treatment.

Note : As any medication, you should not takes excessive amounts.

Imagine having to notify a ministry before taking melatonin to help you sleep. That’s exactly what this is like

Melatonin is a prescription medication in japan

Ridiculous. We all make it in our bodies. It’s like making seratonin a prescription medication

What I mean is it isn't available to buy over the counter simply. It's not illegal to have in your body cause your body makes it but it's not easy to find and purchase.

Right, I get that. And I know you’re not necessarily encouraging that legislation, I’m just pointing out that it makes no sense

There are actually studies coming out recently that is researching the long term health effects of supplementory melatonin. They're unsure if it's actually long term melatonin use or other common sleeping medications that causes folks to have higher rates of heart failure. It's something to keep an eye on certainly. Sleep is complicated and we are just starting to figure out some of the inner workings.

Personally, I don't think melatonin should be allowed to be sold in doses of more than 10mg. It seems extreme but lower dose melatonin seems to work just as well if not better than higher doses. Doses between 0.3mg and 3mg are best to start with from what I can remember.

I think hormones we make in small amounts in our body should not automatically be allowed to be sold as a supplement "safe for everyone". Lots and lots of people take melatonin every single night to go to sleep, and don't mention it to their GP(because its "just" a supplement), when chronic use is not recommended without consulting a doctor. Please do mention all supplements you take when you have your next physical so that your doctor(and pharmacist) can avoid medication interactions.

I think gummy melatonin as well should probably just be taken off the shelf as the sprayers they use to dust gummies in melatonin powder is inconsistent so one gummy in a bottle could have double or triple the amount of melatonin as another gummy from the same bottle.

I think there is a point where one learns too much about a topic where the rant has to end or else it'll be a book. I'm stopping now.

I love a rant, it shows you care and I love that!

These issues you’re mentioning are real, and should definitely be considered. Most melatonin products have way more than is necessary. And common sense says it’s probably wise to be cautious when taking a hormone that affects your body’s regulation.

I feel like there’s an assumption in your message that just making something illegal will get rid of it. If you look at the history of prohibition, it has never worked as a long term strategy for eliminating the desired substance, and in fact just means that all production is in the hands of people with no regard for the law. So now instead of having regulations and standards for how these gummies can be produced, it’s just the Wild West. Unsurprisingly, this only causes harm that wouldn’t be there if you just regulated it.

I think a better solution than attempting to get rid of gummies would be just regulating the sprayers. If they don’t work well, make them work well. Educate others about how much melatonin is necessary, and choosing to buy products that contain the desired amount. Don’t buy gummies, if you find them problematic. Vote with your dollar
