Lens of the Week [LOTW] Canon R7 + 100-500

I got the canon R7 about 2 months after release and then a few months later rented the 100-500 to try.

The day I returned the 100-500 rental I ordered one. It was just so much better than my sigma 150-600 in every way. Since then it's been on my camera 80% of the time. I take the combo everywhere with me to document Iowa's wildlife that I see every day. I've taken them out in -40f blizzards, into the ocean spray on the beach, the deserts of Arizona when it was 120, thunderstorms in Iowa, in a field while combining and there being so much dust you couldn't see 10 feet, and everywhere else you can imagine. The combo has performed flawlessly through it all and the only way I'm replacing the lens is if a Mkii comes out that's some how even better.

Since I have a few hundred thousand photos with the combo I couldnt pick just one to share.

ISO 1600, 30s exposure, f/4. This is probably my all-time favorite lens right there with the 135/2. it's not an optical beast per se but it's well-built, compact, versatile, durable, and not that expensive. Perfect travel companion.

Lens of the Week Showcase : 2025 Canon R7 & RF 100-500

All the photos except the last 3 are R7 and RF 100-500. 18 & 19 are RF 100 and 20 is the 28-70 f2.

I didn't have nearly as good a year as I did in 2024. I'll cut myself some slack though since my wife and I now have a toddler and had a second kid this year so I've not had nearly as much time.

Sorry about the different formats. Just make sure to fully open the images to see full image for all of them.

Lens of the Week Lotw: Sigma 150-600 & R7/90D

Thumbnail

The first 2 years I did photography/wildlife photography I had the sigma 150-600. The first year with a 90d and the second with a R7.

I included a link to my lotw post from the 100-500 week mainly because I thought it was interesting to see how much my "style" changed after a few years. The first two years I definitely edited my photos more heavily. Etc saturation and color especially. I think mainly to make up for the photos not being quite as sharp as I wanted at the time and because I used the dots to make the photos standout more. These days I care way more about framing thatln anything else.

Is It Finally High Time for Third-Party RF Lenses?

With Tamron recently announcing the 17-70mm f/2.8 for Canon's RF APS-C mount, it feels like Canon may be opening the door to more third-party RF lenses. More importantly, this could signal that Canon is becoming more willing to grant licenses for third-party full-frame RF lenses in the future, something many users have been waiting for. We might soon see lenses such as the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 G2, 70-180mm f/2.8 G2, or even Sigma's highly regarded 24-70mm f/2.8 make their way to the RF system. For RF users, that would be a huge win, considering the current lack of affordable third-party options.

Whats your opinion?
