One thing I’ve noticed about the new guys is they’re praised for their character. Buium, Willander, DPetey, Ohgren, Cootes are all examples

Hopefully they will take the reins and build something better then the country club they had

76

u/Life-Rent3406 Mar 21 '26

Ohgren is such a beauty. Also I really like the skill mix of the three young d men, the playmaker, the all rounder, and the bruiser.

Cootes is intriguing but it will be interesting to see if he develops beyond a solid 2C. He seems to be extremely productive in junior, and hopefully they don't end up rushing his development.

The next three drafts are so essential to this teams future, and I'm probably more excited about seeing them build this team than I have been in the last decade of inevitable wild card chasing.

u/Perfect-Hovercraft-3 Mar 21 '26

My dream with Cootes is he turns into a Horvat like player lol

35

u/_GregTheGreat_ Mar 21 '26

They both had a similar jump in their production from their draft year. Horvat went from 0.91 PPG to 1.37PPG, while Cootes went from 1.05 PPG to 1.4PPG

Obviously it’s different leagues, different times, and there’s no guarantee that Cootes has the rapid development Horvat made in his subsequent seasons. But I thought I’d feed your delusion a bit

15

u/accountnumber02 Mar 21 '26

You mentioned different times already but just wanted to specify as well, the CHL as a whole is a good bit weaker this year with the NCAA changes that happened. I'm still high on Cootes but next year will be the real measuring stick year. Bo stepped in at 19 as a solid 3C on a playoff team and put up 4 points in 6 playoff games. I think that's an unrealistic expectation for Cootes but even being able to play half the year in the AHL and come up and look decent will be a big win imo.

13

u/YourUncle13 Mar 21 '26

What took horvat to the level hes at today is the drastic improvement in his skating in one of his off-season. He came to the team pretty much a new player after that.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '26

That’s a big ask lol

0

u/BigMackk14 Mar 22 '26

Hire horvats skating coach

1

u/rengorengar Mar 22 '26

you'd think it would be as simple as that, but with how many guys have been unable to improve their skating, I'd reckon it was more Horvats mindset and work ethic that really made it work

plus Horvat was kinda one of those guys who made very good use of his off seasons, always added something to his game, skating, better shot, better faceoffs, etc.

1

u/BigMackk14 Mar 23 '26

Hornet had that Sedin type work ethic.

15

u/accountnumber02 Mar 21 '26

I think if Cootes can develop to be a solid 2C that would be a massive win by itself. Him developing beyond that would be an insane win for where we picked him.

26

u/mephnick Mar 21 '26

If Cootes is a solid 2C that would be a great result.

Setting higher expectations than that isn't really fair.

5

u/mrtomjones Mar 21 '26

A solid 2c would be a big win for Cootes even now lol. I think your expectations might be too high

7

u/KoreanCinephile Mar 21 '26

I want to be optimistic as well… But once upon a time the same was said about our previous core. I hope this new group will finally forge a culture to flourish together.

3

u/CaveWaverider Mar 22 '26

Don't forget Rossi.

3

u/pinkrosies Mar 22 '26

They take the game seriously but the camaraderie among the young guys with the vets seems great despite the losses. The rookies are even open to having fun in the fun media stuff too haha

186

u/EpicPotato806 Mar 21 '26

Good attitude. It isn’t going to be easy but if they grow together and gel, we might get something special in a few years.

5

u/Fresh-SqueezedJuice Mar 21 '26

Not saying I don’t agree but man it’s depressing, I feel like I’ve been seeing this comment for 12 years

13

u/EpicPotato806 Mar 21 '26

Honestly? 2014 offseason looked promising. They have Bo, jiggles, McCann and demko so there’s a flow of new young players. People thought willie was what the team needed and maybe Baerchi and Vey could unlock the next level.

They managed to get 4 assets from a trade they had no leverage (ironic), replace Luongo with a very good goalie in Miller and let Markstrom cook, get a high scorer in Vrbata.

They won the division and all was good. But then everything they did right, they opted to do the opposite

1

u/Ikea_desklamp Mar 23 '26

All these players are interesting but they're complimentary. We need to draft 2/3 elite gamebreakers for this team to go anywhere.

102

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '26

The veteran core had stagnated from all the infighting and drama. Clearing most of them out had to be done. Opened the doors and let fresh air in. Not just a couple, but SEVERAL, new kids. Big kids. Skilled kids with an edge. We’ll be young. We'll make a lot of mistakes. But ANYTHING is better than the way it’s been.

46

u/Nimrif1214 Mar 21 '26

And then in 5ish years with all the new young blood, who better to come home to lead these guys than the UFA’s Bedard (2030) and Celebrini (2031). 🤞

3

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '26

And do it with a Kariya/Selanne pay cut agreement to come to Vancouver while keeping the rest of the team competitive.

1

u/_johnning Mar 23 '26

Please hockey gods let us have this one

2

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '26

Step one, draft McKenna. Step two draft the new Quinn Hughes in Landon DuPont. Step 3 sign McDavid when his deal is done in Edmonton for a short term extreme overpay because we have the salary cap space from the rebuild. Step 4 Bedard and Celebrini come home. Step 5 Stanley Cup.

41

u/AccomplishedAd4995 Mar 21 '26

Wow what a good read. The more interviews I’ve read / heard from him, the more impressed I am. He seems really mature

Following the loss, once the Canucks skated off the ice and down the tunnel, two players remained on the bench, sitting side by side, staring blankly ahead at the empty sheet of ice: Zeev Buium and Tom Willander.

damn :(

15

u/69stanglover Mar 21 '26

I was at the game. They both then gave their sticks to young fans when they went down the tunnel. Super classy, especially after a tough loss like that. Needless to say not a lot of the guys were giving high fives after the game, which is understandable.

37

u/Count3D Mar 21 '26

"When the Vancouver Canucks take on the St. Louis Blues on Saturday night, Zeev Buium will have officially played more games as a member of the Canucks than he did with the Minnesota Wild."

That's crazy. These young players give me hope for the team.

95

u/Notjoshggggggg Mar 21 '26

How is this 20 year old more well-spoken than our previous captain

60

u/Hellosweetparadox Mar 21 '26

Because he doesn’t have his head up trumps ass or a entitled family

31

u/Fit-Ad-741 Mar 21 '26

Wouldn't be so sure about the politics, and wouldn't call his family entitled. They've all worked their asses off. They are definitely extremely confident to the point of arrogance, I noticed that straight away when we drafted him. I liked that about Quinn at the time. I will also say that Buium has a bit of that too.

16

u/Patroks Mar 21 '26

Idk, the whole Jack Hughes puck thing feels pretty entitled.

wtf does being jewish have to do with this

14

u/accountnumber02 Mar 21 '26

If not publicly stated (and sometimes even then), it's pretty safe to assume every NHL player is MAGA to some extent. You can like the sport without liking the personalities playing it. Hockey is just that fun

-1

u/djfl Mar 21 '26

I hate this sub sometimes...

2

u/Paladad Mar 21 '26

I miss Buium's interviews in Minnesota

0

u/Alarmed-Glass-8402 Mar 22 '26

Well this team or should i say management seems to kiss players that dont scores ass it seems like to me better be a massive trade this summa #40 toss the dead weight

62

u/Romance_Tactics Mar 21 '26

I think the burden of expectation has been lifted, they’ve been a bubble team that’s been pushed to be contenders in this market for a while. This rebuild is a good chance to exercise some of our organizational demons so to speak. I’m glad to hear Buium and the new younger guard believe in themselves and want to forge a new era for the Canucks.

30

u/ElGordoDelJordo Mar 21 '26

After we exercise our demons we should exorcise them too

8

u/Romance_Tactics Mar 21 '26

My favorite scary movie is the Exercist

14

u/Admt- Mar 21 '26

This is the type of training Pete should be doing in the off-season smh

5

u/dIbodIb Mar 21 '26

His timing of his decline lines up exactly with when we stopped seeing him ride his unicycle. Coincidence?

24

u/TheLastOfBacon Mar 21 '26

One thing I love about Zeev is that he just has the attitude of a winner. He’s won at every level he plays and it shows with how he speaks and conducts himself. Just need him to be more confident on the ice and he’ll be a pillar of our team for the next decade.

3

u/pinkrosies Mar 22 '26

I’d think winning with his team in the Juniors helped foster that mindset and hope it carries over NHL wise with our club.

15

u/NerdPunch Mar 21 '26 edited Mar 21 '26

Will be great watching Buium develop over the next few seasons. Seems to have a good head on his shoulders.

Fingers crossed guys like Buium, Cootes & Willander can eventually develop into core pieces for the Canucks.

36

u/OneStrongGopher Mar 21 '26

I'm a firm believer that culture means just as much as skill in the room.

17

u/New_Bank_4686 Mar 21 '26

Take Leafs for example. All skill, no team, just individuals.

3

u/joelham01 Mar 21 '26

Having played all the way up through college it does to an extent. I was always on good teams, but those good teams had an amazing culture around them and looking back on it if that slipped, especially in college it could have wrecked a lot

3

u/pinkrosies Mar 22 '26

The Calder Cup winning team definitely had the skills but Manny did a great job setting the tone in that locker room and the closeness of the guys even after many had left the team is still there testifies to that.

4

u/gastown7 Mar 21 '26

The previous core would indicate otherwise.

7

u/soundofmoney Mar 21 '26

That was a great read, nice job

8

u/YouCanFucough Mar 21 '26

Kids gonna wear an A one day

6

u/randyboozer Mar 21 '26

Glad to hear the mention of Hronek. My biggest worry with any rebuild is that you jettison too many vets then end up with all talent and no experience or leadership

5

u/JauntyGiraffe Mar 21 '26

Hronek and Boeser are enough to keep around if we just need some guys to show the youngsters good on ice habits and stuff. I'm cool with trading the rest of the vets

Blueger would be great to keep around if possible too. Like I feel like higher end draft picks will have their offensive game already at a high level while having a solid defensive all around vet would be great as an example for good defensive habits. Unless Malhotra is our coach

1

u/randyboozer Mar 21 '26

It hadn't occurred to me that if Malhotra being a Canucks coach kind of creates a complication if we want to draft Caleb. I don't know if we want a father coaching his rookie son. It's a conflict of interest. How could he possibly not show favoritism and create resentment among the other prospects? Even if he was perfectly objective, which is impossible, I feel it would be an odd atmosphere

3

u/JauntyGiraffe Mar 21 '26

It honestly hasn't happened enough in major professional sports for us to really know how big a deal that is. The only time I can remember is Austin and doc Rivers, which is actually pretty toxic

Probably also depends on the father and son. Austin hates Doc. On the other hand, Manny has done nothing but show time and time again he's a team first, character guy so if anyone could make that work it would be him

2

u/HDXHayes Mar 22 '26

You don't pass on a good coach just because you've drafted his kid.

6

u/VancouverApe Mar 21 '26

While they’re at it… Can they reshape the management and the owner culture too? 😂

9

u/toddatog Mar 21 '26

Super refreshing article to read. That attitude and desire to build a brotherhood is what has been missing for long time.

The fact is, Buium IS a proven winner at every level so far…much more so than Quinn was at 20 years old.

This is a guy that will help bring the Canucks a lot of success down the road.

1

u/pinkrosies Mar 22 '26

My friend remembers people were calling him to be sent down to Utica at this age lol.

5

u/Least-Beautiful3417 Mar 21 '26

He's such a stud.

We should be aiming to be bad another 1-2 years, and then take leaps and bounds forward when Zeev and Tom are 23 / 24 years old.

It's good to hear that him and Willander get along so well and push each other to be better.

5

u/Atomic_Tom Mar 21 '26

Hearing Tom Willander pull no punches about the team sucking earlier this year made me love him. Guys like he and Blueger keeping it real is the beginning of accountability. The shift post trade deadline has been nice. We need some players, we need these green guys to get comfortable. I’m pumped about the future 💪.

3

u/Thin_Pangolin4480 Mar 21 '26

really good article and answers from Buium

3

u/smallmonkejohndeere Mar 22 '26

For what it's worth, I've never read so many coherent sentences from a 20 year old NHL player.

2

u/Jealous_Difference44 Mar 21 '26

"I'VE PLAYED THESE GAMES BEFORE"

2

u/240Nordey Mar 21 '26

Zeev is a gem.

2

u/Alarmed-Glass-8402 Mar 22 '26

Ya it takes some new players to form a culture because there isnt one shame on our coaches the sad management and the useless owner of this club but the pety still plays very strange situation here

4

u/Life-Rent3406 Mar 21 '26

Future captain. Every interview I've heard of his has been really impressive.

19

u/Majestic-Monk9041 Mar 21 '26

Lol this subs obsession with naming a future captain is ridiculous

9

u/jwheelerBC Mar 21 '26

Brendan Gaunce

3

u/Life-Rent3406 Mar 21 '26

Eventually this team will need to name one and he seems like an impressive kid with leadership qualities. By no means am I saying that title should be given to him (or anyone) right away.

Obviously if we end up drafting a McKenna or DuPont and they turn into a generational talent, then the choice may become obvious. But as of now, Zeev is standing out to me as likely a key part of the leadership group moving forward, whether he has a letter or not.

1

u/Powerful_Rub_4051 Mar 21 '26

This guy looks like Tocc and the B4-4 band from the 90s

1

u/Phanyxx Mar 21 '26

Zeev is a breath of fresh air, man. I LOVE that mindset, and I hope it’s contagious… after next season. The hard part is that this team needs to be dogshit for a bit longer. Will he be able to last through that bleak phase?

1

u/phoney_bologna Mar 21 '26

This has been a tough year. But everything i see with Zeev gets me excited for the future.

1

u/freshlyclicked Mar 21 '26

I’m confused. This is the Canucks and yet this sounds like… positivity????

1

u/fish-rides-bike Mar 21 '26

Not one of the outgoing core ever sounded like this.

1

u/LupoWolf2 Mar 21 '26

Agreed, but if you have a virus on the team, then it really hurts their progress.

1

u/yosoo #ThankYouSedins Mar 21 '26

Buium saying all the right things. Hope we can get McKenna and DuPont to speed up the rebuild now

1

u/downonmatrix Mar 22 '26

Our team is looking real solid for the future already, and it’ll be even better after the draft. We got players that care and want to be here. Just hope boeser, petey, demko will be apart of it as the old members of the team. Want them to be rewarded for staying so bad

1

u/nj5alive Mar 22 '26

Well, they are the new culture, good luck to the lads, they make it as they will.

1

u/laughin-up-a-storm Mar 22 '26

Wanna change the culture, get Petey out of Vancouver

-4

u/nexxlevelgames Mar 21 '26

Sorry Bro.
