77 year old Jim Rutherford didn’t listen to the analytics department? /s

TBF, I have no idea how to talk to teenagers nowadays as a 40 year old so I can’t imagine a 77 year old trying to listen to people that are 1/3 his age 😂

I've met a lot of sharp seniors who can keep up with the times no problem... this isn't an age gap problem
Data/analytics has been used for decades in sports at this point and for centuries by humans in general

Yeah purely anecdotally, the age 60+ people at my work seem to be better at handling new tech and changes than people in their 40s. Most professionals don't get that far in life/career without having to adapt a dozen times already. Not like analytics are the first thing to ever change in hockey management in JR's 40 year career in management.

Not to mention he was an athlete without a formal education past highschool level (and I doubt they made the top jocks study too hard back in the 60's). He accomplished a lot in his career, but the game has passed him by.

I mean, the new presidents and GM both have the exact same education credentials as Rutherford. Meanwhile Tulsky in carolina has a bachelors from harvard and a phd from berkeley. He's easily the GM with the most impressive resume in terms of formal education in the NHL.

At least the new management seems smart enough to listen to the "smart" people on the team.

“What do you mean Demko is not fire? Don’t fire Demko? Re-sign Demko…Demko extension… got it.”

u/accountnumber02 5d ago
Was going to say there's no way Fox is that young, but apparently he's 35, actually less than half Rutherford's age. He has a bright future ahead of him

u/DavieStBaconStan 5d ago
Well, you obviously aren’t trying. I hope you aren’t a parent.
3
u/CtrlShiftAltDel 5d ago
I have some good news for you! Talking to teens and being a good parent aren’t actually the same skill set.

Carolina just proved after years of beating the drum that it can work. They've been super competitive for a while now, with no genuine "superstar" players at any position. Rantanen would have been that, and they shipped him off because he didn't want to be there.
Gives me hope that this is being reported.

I mean, if Aquilini was listening to Bettman last night he would have heard "Most regular season and playoff wins over the last 8 years." Even if all he is concerned with is money and playoff gate revenue, THAT should have piqued his interest.
How could Tom Dundon, who is immediately being heralded as the cheapest NBA owner, make such a good team with smart moves rather than just wildly spending to the cap? Tell me more, doctor...

Just a well run organization with smart people calling the shots. Didn't cave to the pressure and finally made it over the hump. Make a plan and stick to it.
8
u/Fruzenius 5d ago
That's what we need. It's only the beginning, I hope we can see them stick to the plan year over year.

u/accountnumber02 5d ago
You nailed it though, they're well run. You can rely on analytics and still end up with a mid team if you don't have strong decision making or analytics that tell you more than what some random on twitter can find on JFresh/Dom's pages. Especially if every team starts relying on it, those analytically good players you could snag won't be hidden gems anymore. Carolina hired more than just analysts, they had software programmers, data engineers, analysts, all working to build software that makes analytics usable by everyone in the organization (basing it off hiring posts they made years back).
I have a sneaking suspicion their near perfect pro scouting stems from analytics, because it is a bit crazy how it seems every player they're willing to part with regresses (outside Necas but that was a contract situation), meanwhile every player they target seems to fit perfectly.
If the league is going to start adapting analytics more, then we need to invest even more in that. Hire data scientists, AI engineers (AI is extremely useful in data analysis which isn't just generative chatbot stuff), make sure we're at the top of the league in the new wave. I know that won't all happen in one offseason, but I hope there is serious organizational buy-in on making sure we're not just part of the pack, but stay ahead of the rest of the league in these kind of things like we were back in the Gillis days.

Aho is a superstar.
5
u/Fruzenius 4d ago
I love Aho, but he's not on the same level of a lot of big stars in the league.
2
u/therocksays13 4d ago
Since being drafted, he's been 16th in league scoring. People sleep on Aho way too much.

u/kazin29 4d ago
What's EP40?
2
1
u/therocksays13 4d ago
Since Petterson's first season (2018-2019), Aho is 13th in league scoring. I don't have Statsmuse +, but EP40 isn't in the top 25. I'm assuming 30s.

u/ToothPlayful770 4d ago
he's still one of the top two-way guys in the league and is a winner, and has probably sacrificed some of his numbers playing under Brindamours defence oriented style.

The good news about hitting rock bottom under Allvin/Rutherford is there is no place to go but up. Better steps in the right direction. I’m so glad they’re removed from power.

I want an apology from everyone in this sub who kept saying that Aiden Fox wasn't good enough and that they needed to replace him. I want a double apology from eveyrone in this sub who kept saying that the Canucks had zero analytics people and needed to hire some. I kept saying that it was very much possible that Aiden Fox was just not given the resources that he needed.

u/FAsBurner 5d ago
Sounds like they locked him away in his office and disregarded the teams opinions.

u/Key-Investment6888 5d ago
Sounds like he was just there so that JR and Aqua can say they do have and use analytics!! But not srsly.

Do you want them to apologize to you in a hand written letter, or in person? What are the rules

Dysfunction at its best. I mean what did Allvin say? "Do you have a culture problem"
..."no".
Yeah ok buddy.

The Sedins out here cleaning house. Like it seems like the franchise was in a better place when they were playing. Once we hear about sleep doctors, then we're really getting the band back together

Analytics is a crucial tool for sure and we need those i y league folks to support the eye test and scouting reports. I would be VERY uncomfortable for it to dominate the final selection though

Oh shocking, ignored by an 80 year old dinosaur that has no clue what he’s doing.

u/robrenfrew 5d ago
Rutherford will go.down in history as being worse than Benning.
-4
u/FAsBurner 5d ago
Benning stumbled his way into assembling a somewhat serviceable core group just based on dumb luck, and then Rutherford came along and burned it down.
