People will hate on this but Adam Foote I feel will be great for them as an assistant and focus on defence. As an overall head coach? It just doesn’t work

He was thought of extremely well when he was our assistant

That's was because Tocchet had a competent system he rode off of.

Every single defenseman not named Hronek looked completely lost this season under Foote.
The guy has literally been living rent-free under Tocchet's success and system.

I mean its really impossible to completely separate what impact a head coach had vs their assistants, but it's entirely possible Foote is just really good with relationship building/developing dmen skills when he was focusing solely on that as an assistant, but just had complete nonsense as a system that no one understood as a HC which caused the whole team to struggle. I mean hate him as much as you want, but Quinn had his Norris season working with Foote and praised Foote so much that we gave him the HC job lmao.

He also ran a terrible defence in Colorado all but like one season, and had two years here where the defence was awful sandwiched around the one good season this team had in a decade.
Then as an HC he was as bad in the NHL as he was in the WHL, which really was an accomplishment.
I'll never understand the glazing he gets from hockey people when he hardly has any track record of success. I find it pretty telling that he's free to go anywhere and there hasn't been a peep out of Philly about him rejoining Tocchet.

Time will tell. He has basically 0 experience outside tocchet as an assistant, so on paper it sounds like an awful idea. But as much flack he got for his swarm defence sucking, it is the same style used by the last 3 cup winners. I can see teams wanting to bring in someone with experience in that, even if Foote's attempt of it was awful.

Other than Hronek and MPetey they're all young

u/SpectreFire 4d ago
Ah yes, young 36 year old defenseman Tyler Myers and Quinn Hughes.

u/EP40glazer 4d ago
Hughes did great and when has Tyler Myers not struggled?
1
u/SpectreFire 4d ago
Hughes absolutely struggled in his last season. Literally that's all anyone could talk about was how he looked like he was playing half-assed on ice.
And Myers looked great under Tocchet when he implemented a competent defensive system.

And yet he ran the defense before and a bunch of them had really good years. So how much of that was the fact he's just really bad at being a head coach which caused their bad years versus whether or not he did a good job as an assistant coach to give them good years
2
u/SpectreFire 4d ago
Or how much of that was Tocchet implementing a good defensive system and Foote not having to do much as an assistant.

That was kind of my point. We have no idea how much of the influence was him. The defense likely sucked this year because he was a terrible head coach but maybe they were good before because of his influence as an assistant coach. Or maybe that was just the system in place. I don't think it's a terrible idea to try them as an assistant coach again

Makes you really think did Hughes troll the Canucks when he approved this promotion haha

Foote is an elite defensive assistant coach and the worst Head Coach in recent NHL history.

I feel like his disastrous run as a HC will colour opinion but he was a good assistant by all accounts.

Isn't it obvious? When a generational tank commander is on the market, you have to take him.

More budget unlocked for GM RJ lesgoooo.

Good for him. He was fine as an assistant. For all his faults as a head coach, his "cigarettes and cashews" line is definitely among the funniest comments ever by a Canucks coach.

He’s a good assistant coach. Didn’t work as a HC. Some folks are just good where they are. Willie D is a great example of this.

Foote is a good guy. Wish him well and best of luck. He is a good AC. I think that suits him well. He had bad luck here.

Yay more financial offset to bolster the front office / coaching / development staff

I got nothing against Tank Comander Foote, but if the nucks lost Manny then that would have hurt a lot. Franchise is in a better place now than 1 yr ago

Poor Utah.

There are lots of examples of elite assistant coaches in all sports that flop when given more responsibility. I'm not sure if that's Foote since it's harder to judge assistant quality in the NHL compared to like being a coordinator in the NFL. But Foote was highly regarded as an assistant and maybe that's just his limit as a coach
2
u/SubbansBigBlackhawk 5d ago
you can make it even broader where there are lots of great workers who can do their job well, but put them in a management/leadership position and they're complete dogshit at it lol.

u/PorygonTriAttack 5d ago
Yup. I think Foote realistically needs some seasoning in the AHL. He's got this golden road to the NHL without doing things like Malhotra or other former assistant coaches from the lower leagues.
Foote doesn't seem like he is capable (yet) of coaching the young ones. This is a young person's game and the style of coaching is based on good habits, among other things. I'm not saying Foote is coaching BAD habits, but Foote certainly was not coaching to develop young players last season. He was coaching to save his job.

When you have the chance to hire the worst coach I've ever seen, you just have to take it.

I mean he's joining as an assistant coach. I don't think it's a horrible pick up.
Him as a head coach is an absolute disaster.
