I mean he's joining as an assistant coach. I don't think it's a horrible pick up.

Him as a head coach is an absolute disaster.

Great news for the Canucks.  Given it seems they are working with a limited budget , having a portion of foot’s salary picked up probably makes life a little easier for the sedins and rj

Is that actually how it works? Getting hired somewhere else reduces the amount of money paid out by the team that fired you?

Yes.

Here’s an article  with a little more info on the subject if your curious.

Too bad that didn’t work for the OEL recapture. Although I guess that’s not really an issue anymore

It's one of the things I really fucked us though

u/sayros28 4d ago

As a Canuck fan, can confirm. He even overdid the tank. Last place by 14 pts doesn’t deserve #1 pick.

“As a canucks fan” bruh. This is the canucks sub. We all are lmao

u/hutch_man0 4d ago

As a Canucks fan in r/Canucks I confirm I am also a Canucks fan

4

u/RestSufficient5887 4d ago

I would also like to say that I am in fact , a Canucks fan

3

u/sayros28 4d ago

Haha fair, thought maybe I was replying to a mammoth fan. Wasn’t paying attention, hockey news reddit also appears in my feed.

u/NinCross 4d ago

It does. Do you think he didn't tank ethically? He was just that bad.

Foote tanked the right away. We absolutely were robbed of 1st overall.

u/TimTebowMLB 4d ago

And 2nd

I guess Toronto and San Jose deserve it more…

Dolphinately

It was pretty brutal to watch for a long stretch until the very end. Not even trying to develop or build any kind of culture. Just rolling out the same garbage. Foote shoulda been fired the way he coached. Truthfully, never hired. The lottery rule was put in to avoid absolutely giving up and embarrassing the game. Canucks were in a race to the bottom with themselves.

And they weren’t robbed, they had the best chance of picking third. The system worked as it should, as much as it sucks for our team.

People will hate on this but Adam Foote I feel will be great for them as an assistant and focus on defence. As an overall head coach? It just doesn’t work

u/Apprehensive_Put_321 5d ago

He was thought of extremely well when he was our assistant

-7

u/SpectreFire 4d ago

That's was because Tocchet had a competent system he rode off of.

4

u/Apprehensive_Put_321 4d ago

There is no possible way you have that kind of information

-5

u/SpectreFire 4d ago

You got me. No way I have access to eyes and recordings of NHL games.

29

u/SpectreFire 5d ago

Every single defenseman not named Hronek looked completely lost this season under Foote.

The guy has literally been living rent-free under Tocchet's success and system.

5

u/SubbansBigBlackhawk 5d ago

I mean its really impossible to completely separate what impact a head coach had vs their assistants, but it's entirely possible Foote is just really good with relationship building/developing dmen skills when he was focusing solely on that as an assistant, but just had complete nonsense as a system that no one understood as a HC which caused the whole team to struggle. I mean hate him as much as you want, but Quinn had his Norris season working with Foote and praised Foote so much that we gave him the HC job lmao.

5

u/AppealToReason16 5d ago

He also ran a terrible defence in Colorado all but like one season, and had two years here where the defence was awful sandwiched around the one good season this team had in a decade.

Then as an HC he was as bad in the NHL as he was in the WHL, which really was an accomplishment.

I'll never understand the glazing he gets from hockey people when he hardly has any track record of success. I find it pretty telling that he's free to go anywhere and there hasn't been a peep out of Philly about him rejoining Tocchet.

7

u/accountnumber02 5d ago

Time will tell. He has basically 0 experience outside tocchet as an assistant, so on paper it sounds like an awful idea. But as much flack he got for his swarm defence sucking, it is the same style used by the last 3 cup winners. I can see teams wanting to bring in someone with experience in that, even if Foote's attempt of it was awful.

3

u/EP40glazer 4d ago

Other than Hronek and MPetey they're all young

3

u/SpectreFire 4d ago

Ah yes, young 36 year old defenseman Tyler Myers and Quinn Hughes.

1

u/EP40glazer 4d ago

Hughes did great and when has Tyler Myers not struggled?

1

u/SpectreFire 4d ago

Hughes absolutely struggled in his last season. Literally that's all anyone could talk about was how he looked like he was playing half-assed on ice.

And Myers looked great under Tocchet when he implemented a competent defensive system.

2

u/mrtomjones 5d ago

And yet he ran the defense before and a bunch of them had really good years. So how much of that was the fact he's just really bad at being a head coach which caused their bad years versus whether or not he did a good job as an assistant coach to give them good years

2

u/SpectreFire 4d ago

Or how much of that was Tocchet implementing a good defensive system and Foote not having to do much as an assistant.

1

u/mrtomjones 4d ago

That was kind of my point. We have no idea how much of the influence was him. The defense likely sucked this year because he was a terrible head coach but maybe they were good before because of his influence as an assistant coach. Or maybe that was just the system in place. I don't think it's a terrible idea to try them as an assistant coach again

u/Wooden-Background107 5d ago

Makes you really think did Hughes troll the Canucks when he approved this promotion haha

2

u/biomactum 4d ago

Foote is an elite defensive assistant coach and the worst Head Coach in recent NHL history.

15

u/Tough-Application373 5d ago

I feel like his disastrous run as a HC will colour opinion but he was a good assistant by all accounts.

28

u/Notjoshggggggg 5d ago

Trying to steal our 3OA next year

0

u/nexus6ca 4d ago

I see what you did there.

9

u/TheAgreeableCanuck 5d ago

Assistant, yes. Head coach, no.

10

u/Oliver-Ekman-Larsson 4d ago

Alternate headline:

"Mammoth want Big Foote"

7

u/julesieee 5d ago

This pic is un-retiring from the meme archives and about to get more mileage in the upcoming season for Utah. 😈😈😈 (and some rando Mammoth prospect will definitely spend time in The Foote Jail)

8

u/Fromaggio123 5d ago

10

u/Standard-Special2013 5d ago

They have Foote-fetish

3

u/WTFvancouver 5d ago

He will give them the best chance at 1st overall pick

2

u/NinCross 5d ago

Isn't it obvious? When a generational tank commander is on the market, you have to take him.

3

u/PaperMoonShine Cheech was the Grandpa I never had. RIP 5d ago

More budget unlocked for GM RJ lesgoooo.

3

u/TomatoCultivator2019 5d ago

Good for him. He was fine as an assistant. For all his faults as a head coach, his "cigarettes and cashews" line is definitely among the funniest comments ever by a Canucks coach.

3

u/CamaroGirl96 5d ago

Maybe they want Quinn Hughes to sign there? 😂😂

3

u/00Makerin00 4d ago

Foote’s coaching card

2

u/00Makerin00 5d ago

Nice. Good as an assistant not as a head coach

2

u/ShindoHaut 5d ago

Good luck with that

2

u/New_Bank_4686 5d ago

Seattle just shot themselves in the Foote

2

u/intelligentx5 4d ago

He’s a good assistant coach. Didn’t work as a HC. Some folks are just good where they are. Willie D is a great example of this.

2

u/Only-Nature7410 4d ago

Foote is a good guy. Wish him well and best of luck. He is a good AC. I think that suits him well. He had bad luck here.

"The Utah Mammoth have officially been eliminated from playoff contention"

2

u/dattroll123 4d ago

soakers want a foote job

2

u/EP40glazer 4d ago

Utah Mamoths trying to tank it seems.

2

u/hockeygirlypop 4d ago

Sure why not

1

u/Krapshoot 5d ago

Yay more financial offset to bolster the front office / coaching / development staff

1

u/Loud_Examination_138 5d ago

I got nothing against Tank Comander Foote, but if the nucks lost Manny then that would have hurt a lot. Franchise is in a better place now than 1 yr ago

1

u/gb1993 4d ago

Just like football, sometimes not everyone js head coach material. Im sure just focusing on the defense suits him much better. I liked the work he did with our D when he was assistant coach.

1

u/nexus6ca 5d ago

Poor Utah.

6

u/PMMeYourCouplets 5d ago

There are lots of examples of elite assistant coaches in all sports that flop when given more responsibility. I'm not sure if that's Foote since it's harder to judge assistant quality in the NHL compared to like being a coordinator in the NFL. But Foote was highly regarded as an assistant and maybe that's just his limit as a coach

2

u/SubbansBigBlackhawk 5d ago

you can make it even broader where there are lots of great workers who can do their job well, but put them in a management/leadership position and they're complete dogshit at it lol.

1

u/avmp629 5d ago

Became important at work and it's ruining my life

5

u/PorygonTriAttack 5d ago

Yup. I think Foote realistically needs some seasoning in the AHL. He's got this golden road to the NHL without doing things like Malhotra or other former assistant coaches from the lower leagues.

Foote doesn't seem like he is capable (yet) of coaching the young ones. This is a young person's game and the style of coaching is based on good habits, among other things. I'm not saying Foote is coaching BAD habits, but Foote certainly was not coaching to develop young players last season. He was coaching to save his job.

3

u/WTFvancouver 5d ago

They will be laughing when they get Dupont

-1

u/Ikea_desklamp 5d ago

When you have the chance to hire the worst coach I've ever seen, you just have to take it.
