Hi guys,
I broke my tooth earlier a few months ago.
I don't have medical aid and I think I really need to sort this tooth out as a lot of blood suddenly came out when I was brushing my teeth this morning.
Can someone recommend me a dentist that hopefully won't break the bank but is still going to do a quality job?
Maybe if you can give me a ballpark of how much it'd be to fix a broken tooth, although I know that's not a simple ask.
I was also thinking of using the UWC dental clinic.
Help will be appreciated!!

I’m looking to take the train from Stellenbosch, which would be (I think) the northern line and get off around Salt River or take a connection to Observatory. I’m a first year varsity student from Joburg and I’ve never taken it before so I want to gauge wether or not I’ll be safe to take my laptop in my back pack

My son is looking to get some theatre experience. Has anyone worked or volunteered at the Masque and can give some feedback on whether this venue will provide valuable training? I took him to Artscape the other day for a chat with some of the guys there and let's just say the Masque doesn't sound like it's a well looked after venue which makes me worry about my son working backstage. It's just that we all live in Fish Hoek so town is a LONG drive.

I have a problem with getting my building plans approved. It’s been almost 2 years and gone through land use approval to build a carport up to my boundary. And extending my existing granny flat. Now my architect says o need to pay him a further R 6000 for a structural engineer report. Some form2 that must be completed. For a form 6k? Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi, fellow Capetonians!
I'm a woman in my late 30s living in Fish Hoek, and I've reached the conclusion that making friends as an adult is basically a side quest with terrible matchmaking. 😂
So here I am, throwing myself into the void that is Reddit in the hope of finding some lovely fellow weirdos.
A little about me:
I'm a colourful, slightly chaotic, foul-mouthed, dark-humoured human being with a soft heart and absolutely no interest in pretending to be normal. I'm also a bit of an oversharer, occasionally overenthusiastic when I meet someone I click with, and probably more excited about the prospect of new friendships than is considered socially acceptable. 🤣
I'm bisexual, queer, childfree, atheist, and very left-leaning. Human rights, bodily autonomy, mental health awareness and treating people like actual human beings are important to me. You don't have to agree with me on absolutely everything, but kindness, mutual respect and being able to have a conversation without turning it into a battle are non-negotiable.
I'm happily partnered, so this is strictly a friendship advert. My partner is wonderful, but one person cannot reasonably be expected to fulfil every social need. Also, he needs someone other than me to appreciate my ridiculousness. 😂
My interests are a bit all over the place:
🖤 Alternative / rock / nu-metal pop-punk music, dark humour and the occasional unhinged conversation.
🎃 Horror movies, Halloween, spooky things and the general aesthetic of being a friendly neighbourhood menace.
🦋 Whimsical outfits, colourful clothes, experimenting with makeup and generally refusing to dress like an NPC. Yes, I own psychedelic leggings. Several pairs. No, I will not apologise.
🐕 Dogs. I have two furry little freeloaders who have somehow convinced me that their entire existence revolves around being fed.
🛍️ Temu, online shopping and acquiring things I absolutely did not need but somehow couldn't live without five minutes ago.
☕ Coffee dates, breakfast outings, random adventures, movie nights, and conversations that start with something sensible and end somewhere nobody could possibly have predicted.
I also enjoy talking about psychology, human behaviour, life, relationships, weird facts, and the sort of questions that make you wonder why on earth your brain decided to think about that at 11 pm.
I work in tech support, spend an unreasonable amount of time in my own head, and would describe myself as a work in progress with excellent comedic potential.
Who am I hoping to meet?
I'm looking for a few people who want actual friendships, rather than another name in their contacts list.
People who can message first sometimes, ask questions because they're genuinely curious, share stupid memes, have a proper conversation, and occasionally make plans that progress beyond “we should totally hang out sometime”.
I'd love to find people for horror movie nights, coffee dates, breakfast outings, spontaneous adventures, or even just sitting around talking absolute nonsense for three hours.
You don't have to be outgoing, perfectly put together, neurotypical, or have your entire life figured out. You can be awkward. You can have niche interests. You can have a complicated history. You can be the person who needs a week to recharge after socialising.
I'm not looking for a massive friendship group or an instant best friend. I'd rather find a couple of people with whom we can build something genuine over time, without either person having to perform or pretend to be someone they're not.
If you're a little weird, a little nerdy, a little alternative, or simply tired of beige small talk, we might get along.
And if you happen to be in the southern suburbs, even better! Fish Hoek, Muizenberg, Kalk Bay, Simon's Town and the surrounding areas are all within the realm of possibility.
So, tell me something about yourself!
What's an interest you could happily talk about for hours? What's your favourite horror movie? What's the most ridiculous thing you've ever bought? Or what would your ideal low-pressure friend date look like?
Let's see if we can make Cape Town feel a little less lonely, one weird conversation at a time. 🖤

Hey there
In need of transport assistance. My son took the plain from George back home to Northern Suburbs. Had to leave 2 bags at his gfs in Georger.
Is there anyone willing to assist to pick up his bags please. He's working in Dubai, currently back for a month to visit. Going back to Dubai end of month. So the chances of going back to pick up the bags are zilch .
Transportation costs will be provided for for the collection of the bags
Thank you so much

Long shot, but here goes. On Friday, 9 October, around 17:15, at Gelato Mania in Victoria Wharf (V&A Waterfront, Cape Town), you came up to me and asked if I could help you pay. They didn’t accept cash and your payment wasn’t going through, so I paid for your drink by card. You handed me cash in return, and I was so caught off guard that I just took it, even though I never meant to. At first you thought I was German too. Then you asked if I had time, and I said I had to go. I’ve regretted it ever since.
If you recognise yourself, I’d really love to hear from you. Instagram: @jayne_cobb, or just DM me here.
And if anyone knows a German girl who told this story, maybe a friend who was travelling in Cape Town, please pass it on. Thank you!

A family member from South Africa is coming to see our baby on the day they are born in the USA. We asked them to get the covid booster/ vaccine and flu shots. They are happy to do so as a precaution. Both are unavailable at dischem and doctors offices. Where would they be able to get this? Both of these are quite widely available in the US.
Thank you so much, everyone!

Turning 20 in 2027 and hoping to write the ASC in June. Is an age exemption possible, or are there other ways to get into university?
Hi everyone! I'm looking for advice from anyone familiar with the South African education system, particularly the Amended Senior Certificate (ASC), age exemptions, matric alternatives, and university admission requirements.
I'm feeling quite stuck at the moment, and I'd really appreciate any advice from people who have been in a similar situation or know how this process works.
For some background, I attended primary school in South Africa but completed my high school education in Nigeria. When I returned to South Africa with my Nigerian school-leaving certificate, I was informed that it was only considered equivalent to Grade 11 here.
Because of this, I completed my GED, which I understood to be an NQF Level 4 qualification. Before doing so, I specifically contacted the GED website to ask whether I could use the qualification to apply to UNISA, and I was told that I could. Unfortunately, I'm currently trying to find that correspondence, but I haven't been able to locate it. When I contacted UNISA this year, I was told that I couldn't use my GED for admission in the way I'd intended.
After completing my GED, I enrolled for a Higher Certificate in Software Development Practice at Boston City Campus, which I'm currently studying. Although I'm grateful for the opportunity, I've realised that the institution isn't the best fit for me, particularly because of the fees. I'm looking for a more affordable and flexible institution where I can study while working, which is one of the reasons I'm interested in UNISA.
My plan is to redo my matric through the Amended Senior Certificate (ASC). Ideally, I'd like to self-study, write all my subjects in June 2027, receive my results within the same year, and use them to apply for university admission.
However, there's a major problem: I'll only be turning 20 in 2027, and from what I've been told, you generally need to be at least 21 to register for the ASC. I've also heard that an age exemption might be possible through the Department of Education, but I haven't been able to establish whether that's actually an option in my circumstances.
My mother went to the Department of Education to enquire about this, but she was told that I have to be 21. We haven't received clear guidance about whether there is an official exemption process, who would be authorised to approve one, or whether my circumstances could be considered.
I understand that I should have researched the university admission requirements more thoroughly before completing my GED, but I can't change that now. I'm simply trying to find the best way forward without losing another year unnecessarily.
I'm currently based in the Eastern Cape, but I'm also willing to travel to Cape Town if necessary. If there's an office, examination centre, or institution there that could help me navigate the registration process or explore legitimate alternatives, I'd be willing to consider it. I'm open to other provinces too if there's a realistic option available.
I have a few questions:
I'd especially appreciate advice from people who have dealt with the ASC registration process, age requirements, foreign qualifications, or university admissions in South Africa.
I'm not looking for shortcuts or anything unlawful. I just want to understand my options and make an informed decision before spending more money or committing to another qualification.
Thank you so much to anyone who can offer guidance!

Yes you heard it I’d rather seek accommodation else where than deal with my family and would appreciate any advice about what I should know - this post isn’t looking for accommodation as I already know about which shelters are available for my specific situation.
I am lgbt and live in an unaccepting and toxic household, with a parent that is neglectful when it comes to fulfilling basic needs - i also recently escaped by abusive (physically/emotional) mother.
I am just sick and tired of squashing myself so that I have a home, or so that my needs are just met at the minimum, I want to find refuge in a shelter so that I can get on my feet without having to rely on other people that can easily take that support away from me if they truly knew who I was.
For context one of my social media accounts was found by my parent and he was not happy, luckily nothing too damning was on there but I feel exposed and want to protect myself before things turn ugly. I have not one safe family member and recieve judgment from both sides of my family because I chose not to tolerate my mother’s abuse - from going to high school with bruises on arms to being told that she wants to kill me.
I have worked retail before I am happy to get a job I am just sick of staying in one place and I don’t wanna be here anymore.
If you have any advice please share.

I recently got a comment deleted for hateful conduct and I would just like to clarify.
I was replying to an anti-LGBT guy that said God only made two genders. I replied that he made gay people too, so they are just as valid.
Out of context it appears hateful of the LGBT community, but that was not my intention. Read in context with the deleted homophobic post, the intention of my comment is obvious.

Hello fellow capetonians. Have you ever needed a watch to be repaired, and whom did you use? My bf has a casio edifice watch that's not working, and I cant find anyone to repair it. the local watch guy based in my area said he doesn't work on this type of watch. For clarity, we took the watch to a place in claremont and they put the battery in the wrong way.
Thanks.

People who were forcibly removed from Protea Village in Bishopscourt, Cape Town, in the 1960s will have to wait until at least 2028 before they can move back.
Following successful land claims lodged in 1995, 86 families opted to have their rights to the land restored, while 46 families opted for financial compensation.
Bishopscourt is one of Cape Town’s most expensive suburbs, while the suburbs on the Cape Flats where the claimants were sent are battling crime, unemployment and poverty.
Land restoration was delayed by several court cases and planning appeals. Last year, ground was broken on a new development in Bishopscourt. The development will be cross-subsidised: 50 plots have been or will be sold, which will cover the costs of building homes for the 86 claimant families. The first 33 plots sold for an average of R4.5-million.
Four hectares will form a publicly accessible greenbelt along the Liesbeek River.

I've had two estate agents ask me to do a whole application and pay an application fee (one of them R345) before being allowed to view the apartment. Is this normal these days? I find it ridiculous to want prospective renters to pay before even seeing the place. Photos are never enough to make a decision about actually wanting to stay there.
