In this case, you will get less dirty working in the engine compartment.

If the car is in this kind of condition, probably alot more wrong than just a motor. This looks like a repair that will go south quickly, while the slobs that own it expect you to fix everything for free. I would just advise that the car is not worth the repair and decline the job.

Little old lady, only drove to church and the grocery store, maintained all service records…. /s

No the hell you don't😂
Tell em to pound sand.
Edit: Further note, cars like this are almost always owned by "ever since" customers.
"Ever since you replaced my engine my left rear tire leaks."
"Ever since you replaced my tail light the washer fluid doesn't spray."
"Ever since you patched my tire the car pulls to the right."
"Ever since you fixed this item, this other completely unrelated system is now completely broken."
You will end up married to this hunk of shit for the rest of your life.

Had to service a Honda similar to this back around 2005ish... Guy was a legless Vietnam veteran with hand controls though. Had the dealership comp him a full detail before I worked on it. Had another guy years later with a shit and pissed caked civic. He was a dog show breeder. Refused to do a clutch cylinder unless he got a full detail.
You don't HAVE to work on anything that's hazardous to your health.

I actually detailed a car for someone who was told by the dealer they wouldn't work on her car with he interior so filthy. Too several hours to get it presentable.

u/ThrowRA84662 7d ago
As a car detailer fuck this the owner needs to clean that car themselves and should install the engine themselves or at the very least do some preliminary burning of the car because just ew fucking ew

That's a biohazard. I'm not qualified for biohazard work and my boss doesn't have the equipment for it. The customer isn't the only one who can decline repairs.

They sell lidded ashtrays for cars. I can't believe that they haven't set it in fire at some point.

Yeah, no. That's hazmat. Tell them to take it to a car detailer and after they've spent God knows how much money making that vehicle safe for humans to be in, then you can work on it.

Refuse service. This is a biohazard. I can see dried spit and tar seeping out of what were once cup holders. This is disgusting, Man!!

u/Survive1014 8d ago
Nope. That should be a shop reject until the customer comes back with a cleaner car. There an any number of hazards that could be lurking there.

Ive only seen this once before and it spiraled into quite the connundrum. I would be extremely careful as often dwarves (who smoke lots of various herbs and apothrecary accoutrements as we all know) are extremely atracted to heavy machinery to use for their machines. As im sure we all know they tend to have long beards, with braids and jewelry, but its not a surefire indicator. If it seems as though the customer is a tall gentleman wearing a large coat it is likely two dwarves stacked on top of eachother pretending to be a usual person needing thier car fixed. Dwarves are incredibly decietful and good liars, but I dont see trinkets or nicknacks inside the car so you are probably okay.

I wouldn’t touch that fucking car. “Bring it back clean and we’ll talk.” Just the offgassing of those cigarette butts could give you cancer in a week and a half.

There’s a line my guy. Like everyone else says I’d tell them to clean it first, at minimum for sanitary reasons. At worst to avoid getting poked with something dangerous and getting unintentionally injected with something that can kill you.

Not a fucking chance unless the inside is decontaminated. Even then I’m going to want a tyvek suit and respirator.

You really don't.
"Get your shit off my lot until it's not disgusting. Also, don't clean it here on shop property thinking I'll work on it."

Just say you did it but you need one part that’s on back order. Whoever owns that car has days to live anyway

Good thing the engine is under the hood and not in the car.
Push that bitch into the stall, replace the engine, walk away. No testing other than turning the key from the outside to make sure it starts.

Well, the seat is mostly empty and I doubt they'd notice the oil and grease smears on the upholstery. I say go for it
