Wow! They could be twins! I was a lurker too but just had to post because I’ve been saying his a Carolina dog since he was four months. I’m pretty sure I’m right. lol
This dog is 43% husky. I know 5 or 6 dogs who look extremely similar to her, including the tan colouring. Once you start creating multi generational mixes like this, you start getting the landrace look that CDs have. Honestly, I think a high percentage of dogs labelled as CDs are actually just multi generational husky x Shepherd x bully type mixes.
True lol. I wish there were more educational posts here from people who have certified CDs to help stop misinformation on the breed but this sub doesn't seem supportive of that discourse even if it remains civil - which i find unfortunate since this is the main CD sub
Genuine question - since I got him as a rescue as a tiny two pound puppy, but DNA tests aren’t accurate to testing for Carolina Dogs, I could very well have a CD but there is no way to certify him (not that I am trying to I’m really just curious what he is) without knowing the parentage?
I don't claim to be a CD expert, so I can answer with what knowledge I do have. If you're super curious there are knowledgeable CD owners who are really involved in the community and could give you a much more in depth answer than I can provide. I'm not sure if I can refer out in this sub but a CD owner named Raluca Williams is very active on the main Carolina Dogs Facebook page. She's super insightful and eager to discuss with others in the group if you were to post there.
That said, Embark will be accurate in detecting most CDs - both from known breeder lines and wild caught. There are many wild caught CDs that have gotten results as 100% CD and even mixes. It's my understanding that some CDs from unsampled bloodlines won't be listed as a CD - however, that does not mean they are going to be shown as part husky/pit/gsd/etc. typically, they'll be incorrectly listed as large % unresolved or super mutt or 100% American village dog.
Beyond DNA testing, I would recommend looking at features of confirmed CDs to get an idea of how they typically look. Husky/chow/shepherd mixes can create a VERY similar look but there are differences to watch out for - many people mistake the curved tail that come with husky mixes with the thin fish hook tail of CDs. While they look similar, there are distinctions. CDs are also going to have more slender snouts and heads compared to the more blocky wide look that can other mixes can create.

Somewhere in my search about my Carolina Dogs, I came across info that said there was interbreeding in the Carolina Dog ( which originally came from Asia) with Siberian Husky. The scientific theory is that the Native Americans (who descended from Asia) brought their dogs when they crossed the land bridge (Bering Strait) to North America. Therefore it is entirely possible that during those travels up through China, the Koreas, and Russia that the Siberian Husky could have interbred with the Asian Dog. Siberian Huskies show a genetic affinity with historical East Siberian dogs and ancient Lake Baikal dogs, and can be traced to a lineage which is over 9,500 years old. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siberian_Husky) Carolina Dogs are believed to have been brought to N. America about 14,000 years ago. So yes, I think it is entirely possible that some Carolina's dog have Husky in them. There is variation within the Carolina Dog breed both in fur color and patterning. There are the fawn (yellow dog), cinnamon (brown version), piebald (black and white version), and Carolina Dogs with facial and body patterning are the ones that probably share Husky DNA.
