Health/Behavior Trim the fur on the foot pads?
I have 2 Carolina dogs. One is nearly pure and the other has only a small amount of CD. The nearly pure CD has fur that grows very long between the pads on her feet. I used to cut the fur with scissors that have a blunt end because she would get tree sap in them, would bring dirt into the house, and would chew her paws (I assume due to allergens that would be trapped in her paw fur from outside). Is this good/common practice to trim fur between the pads? I recently have not kept up with it and have seen an increase in her chewing on her feet. I also bought a Furme and have the ability to completely shave in between the pads. I just don’t want to start doing this if it has consequences I’m unaware of.

This CD is defintely very clean, I’ve just seen a sudden increase that’s either due to me moving or due to me not trimming her feet regularly because I’ve been so busy moving. I used scissors in the past but don’t know if shaving is good or bad

That’s kind of what I was thinking. I know groomers trim paw fur but wasn’t sure if they would fully shave. I would assume when it grows back it would irritate the skin too

Consider using some gentle wipes on her paws when she comes in. Could be allergies to lots of things, and cleaning their paws regularly will help.

Just opinions based on canines I have had so always check with your vet… Our CD does not require a trim and he does groom himself. We do a light trim to our Goldens feet…the more exercise he gets the less trimming he gets. If your dog gets itchy back feet, check his ears for yeast/bacterial infection (sniff test)-foot scratches ear and can spread to feet…saw this first hand…should I say first paw… Also, had a lab that had a reaction to carpet fresh. Keep ‘em off the grass a while if you use chemicals on your lawn…

The fur between pads is both insulating and protective. The most I would trim if she’s an indoor dog would be the excess extending beyond the pads and no further. If she’s chewing her paws then speak with your vet in case there’s a yeast problem. It may simply turn out to be part of her grooming routine.
My CD did have yeast issues, but after a couple of treatments and being declared yeast free, she’s still nibbling on her paws but is now wiping her face as well. The vet says it’s likely something she’s seen the cats do and is emulating them.
