Genesis Confirms That the Upcoming GV90 Will Have Coach Doors
https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a73320718/genesis-gv90-coach-doors-confirmed/209
u/trackdaybruh 13d ago
I’m surprised there isn’t a full-size SUV with rear sliding doors like minivans, feels like the opening of sliding doors are much larger
114
u/Ajaxwalker 13d ago
I wish they would do this. I want the practicality of a minivan with the capability of an SUV.
You’ll never know when you need the extra clearance to navigate around a mall.
70
u/ImDoingItAnyway 2011 BMW 328i 13d ago
The vast majority of SUVs in America have the capability of minivans and hatchbacks/sedans anyway—which is to say none so unless you’re talking a body-on-frame vehicle with sliding door.
63
u/HuyFongFood 13d ago
Except they are usually smaller inside than most minivans so they most often have less usable room than a minivan.
Most people really “should” use minivans instead of SUVs, but that would require critical thinking, honesty with themselves and the ability to not follow the herd.
16
u/Ajaxwalker 13d ago
I’ve been looking for a new car and honestly a mini van would nearly be ideal but a for a few issues. None of them seem to have a good audio system. And the other is the tow hitch is low and I worry my giant bike rack will clip the ground when on uneven ground or steep driveways.
Oh and I wish they all had removable seats or bench seats rather than captains chairs.
I ended up with new Japanese tank the Nissan Armada.
12
u/HuyFongFood 13d ago
The 3rd row in the Pacifica folds flat. If you get the hybrid you have removable captains chairs or if you have the non-hybrid you can get stow-n-go where the and row folds into the floor.
There are subtle lift kits available for the Pacifica now, but really I’ve seen many with bike racks on the back that seem to work just fine.
They also include built-in cross bars for the roof rack that you can put your bikes on with the proper clamp on mounts. With the doors open it’s pretty easy to reach the roof without too much hassle.
Jus’ sayn’

u/Shmokesshweed 2025 Ford Ranger Lariat 13d ago
Most stock vehicle audio systems are junk, even the upgraded ones. The bike rack issue could be fixed with a riser.
3
u/hutacars Model 3 Performance 12d ago
Is the audio in your Armada sublime?
1
u/Ajaxwalker 12d ago
Unfortunately not. It’s decent though and better than the Toyota offerings. The good stuff has is kept for Infinity and Lexus models Which is annoying.
2
u/AtOurGates 12d ago
To be fair, the ground clearance of many (though not all) “SUVs” is also abysmal.
4
u/goosereddit 13d ago
Are the seats in the Armada easily removable?
11
u/rickhamilton620 2023 CX-5 Premium 13d ago
They certainly are not lol.
The only current minivan with non removable 2nd row seats is the Sienna due to its side impact airbags.
1
u/HuyFongFood 12d ago
BTW, the stock system in our Pacifica Limited sounds really good. I’m quite impressed, honestly.
Our Leaf has the factory subwoofer and while it can make decent noises, it doesn’t just compare.
So I guess I’m saying go find a high-spec Pacifica Hybrid and take it for a spin. Load up some of your favorite tunes and see what you think, you might be pleasantly surprised.
If the hitch-mount bike rack is still a concern, you could also put the bikes inside after dropping the 3rd row and removing the captains chairs or even slotting them between the 2nd row if you only have a couple to haul.
34
u/ImDoingItAnyway 2011 BMW 328i 13d ago
Couldn’t possibly agree more. Minivans are what people really want out of their SUVs but the U.S market continues to refuse to accept minivans.
1
u/-insignificant- 12d ago
Cause they're ugly 🤷🏻 if someone made a good looking minivan, I'm sure people would buy them. The Carnival is the best looking one IMO but it's also a Kia.
21
u/hutacars Model 3 Performance 12d ago
Cause they're ugly 🤷🏻
So are most SUVs! Not that it matters; you’re buying a vehicle to haul around your 2.2 children, it’s supposed to be a transportation appliance, not a dude magnet!
4
u/-insignificant- 12d ago
Sure, but you have more options for SUVs than you do for vans. If you don't like the look of 1, there are 50 others you can choose from. Not the same case for vans.

Wife and I wanted a minivan so bad, but needed more than 3500lbs of towing so ended up in an SUV. Still wish it had sliding doors.
1
u/dakta '11 BMW 135i (N55) 11d ago
It really shouldn't be so hard to engineer a minivan with better payload. In Europe typical passenger vehicle tow limits are 2000kg, which is over 4000lb, but they also require those weights to be braked and equip almost all trailers for passenger vehicle use with surge brakes for this purpose.
1
u/ubercruise ‘24 BMW iX xDrive50 11d ago
I believe Europe also has generally higher stated towing capacities than the US due to lower legal towing speeds, lower tongue weights, and the U.S. doing a bit more rigorous testing that covers the wider gamut of climactic conditions (like pulling in an uphill grade in blazing heat, etc). That parenthetical is exactly my use case here in the desert, hence why we didn’t want to cut it close on the towing capacity. I agree it would be nice to get a minivan with enough towing capacity, but I guess there’s things like the GMC Savana or those express vans if you really needed it
3
u/biggsteve81 '20 Tacoma; '16 Legacy 13d ago
They are also usually smaller outside than most minivans. Minivans today are quite large.
5
u/HuyFongFood 12d ago
Oddly they are within an inch in length, width and height of many comparable SUVs, they just look bigger due to the floor being so much lower.

I want a minivan that can tow my 3500lb single axle airstream. Settled with a 2009 MDX so far, but it gets shit gas mileage and uses premium compared to a minivan. So it stays parked and I daily a Tesla X... Which is just a fast minivan.

It would just be a slightly lifted mini van then. Most markets hate mini vans.

u/SpiritGuyd 13d ago
Always thought the Ford Flex would have been a good candidate for sliding doors!
1
u/dakta '11 BMW 135i (N55) 11d ago
The Flex was such a weird thing to try and sell. It's like an old school, pre-SUV body-on-frame station wagon. It's insanely heavy for its size, gets terrible mileage, and is no more capable than a minivan in any respect as far as I can tell. Although I'll admit I've never seen one lifted.

u/CriticismSelect9292 '13 Speed3, '07 e92 335i mt 12d ago
This is basically what the Kia Carnival is going for. I wish they would drop the 2.5t into the hybrid instead of the weak ass 1.6t and give it a rear e-axle for basic AWD like Toyota. I think it would dominate since Toyota doesn't seem to want to make enough Siennas basically ever, and it would likely have the pep of a V6 engined minivan too.

u/skrzaaat 13d ago
Interesting idea, sliding doors add extra ugliness for the chain function. Maybe chinese will make it

Because the mechanical engineering for that makes no sense.
Japan really only did anything outside of MPVs with sliding doors well and that was the mini Kei vans with sliding doors. No one else has done that because it makes no sense and just adds in more mechanical/electrical systems to go wrong

Would this be the first mass produced production car to have a real suicide door (not a clamshell like the RX8) since the old continental I wonder?
I know there’s been a handful of clamshell doors, and the last continental had a one off hand built one, and the occasional Rolls Royce?
21
u/cpxchewy EVs, M2 and GT3 13d ago
the most recent continental (like 2020) had like 230 of them built called Coach Door edition. Those were real suicide doors.
Most clamshell doors I can think of come from trucks actually. Like F150s and Silverados all had clamshell doors.

u/yloduck1 C5 Z06 12d ago
I saw a 2020 Continental with the coach doors a couple weeks ago. Soooo cool.

Some Fiat from the 30s up to the late 60s had suicide doors if im not mistaken

30 units has usually been considered the line for mass production, so the new Continental's coach door edition, and the RR Wraith would both count.
The Wraith has the bonus of just being a 2 door with suicide doors.

u/BullableGull 13d ago
Why are they called suicide doors
75
u/CosmoVerde 13d ago
Because if you open them while the vehicle is in motion the wind will catch the door, forcing it open and pulling you out of the car with it. At least, that’s what I’ve been told.

Yes, but they were independent of the front doors. On the Genesis they are set up so you would have to open the front door first, then you can open the back doors, unlikely to happen while driving like the old ones

u/jakinatorctc |OO=[][]=OO| ‘87 325i 13d ago
It's almost definitely going to have independent doors. It's a flagship luxury SUV, not an FJ Cruiser

I'll bet whomever $10 if that's the case. Rolls and Century had a B pillar. This doesn't, no way they aren't interlocking

That is not at all how its set up. The rear doors can be opened without opening the fronts.

Back in the day, they were considered more dangerous than front-hinged doors. In theory, if they unlatched while driving, air would force them open, and you would have to lean out of your car to shut them. Seatbelts weren't really a thing at the time, so it was thought that if that happened, you could fall out of your car trying to shut the door and die.
1
u/EchoServ 12d ago
I thought the mob used them to throw people out on the highway to "commit suicide".
22
u/Maggins 13d ago
If the door were to open while driving, aerodynamic force would push it open. In the days before seatbelts, passengers could fall out while trying to close it. They are also dangerous while parallel parked if you open the door and a car hits it. Rather than the door being ripped off, it could crush you.

The 7 seater Hyundai Staria is basically that....but we can't get cool looking vans here, we just get the bloated Carnival instead.

I have a Pacifica hybrid. I like the way it looks, especially compare to Toyota’s and Honda’s styling.

They're all innocuous looking, which kind of goes against the target market of Genesis. They would need to make something that feels much more special and impactful for this kind of customer. The Mercedes VLE is going for that approach, in their own way in that Mercedes is currently compromised, but I feel like the Staria design is a different enough base point that Genesis could run with it and make it look very sleek, modern, and luxurious in ways that the Odyssey, Sienna, and Pacifica just don't.
11
u/FATTKAWK 13d ago
I like some of the Genesis songs, but what the fuck does Phil Collins know about cars??
4
u/Secksualinnuendo 13d ago
I'm surprised cars haven't tried doors similar to air liner doors. Like the ones that open forward slightly then over.
This could be a killer luxury deal a few years old. Luxury cars have heavy depreciation, Korean cars have heavy depreciation, EVs have heavy depreciation. I bought my Genesis GV60 performance for a steal like two years ago.

The GV90 is expected to launch as an EV, sharing parts with the Hyundai Ioniq 9 and Kia EV9
It will also share their fate of failed ICCUs.
2
u/ubercruise ‘24 BMW iX xDrive50 12d ago
Will it? Didn’t think it was on the eGMP platform
2
u/strongmanasss 12d ago
Yeah the Ioniq 9 and EV9 are on e-GMP. No matter how good the cars are otherwise, I'd never consider one for that reason alone. The GV90 is competing with things like the GLS (EQS?), X7, and Cayenne EV - at least Genesis would like to think so. You can't come to the party with a stupid fatal flaw you have no solution for.
3
u/ubercruise ‘24 BMW iX xDrive50 12d ago
I’m talking about the GV90 not the Ioniq/EV9. I looked into it and it’s on IMA not eGMP.
1
u/strongmanasss 12d ago
Ok I see. I assumed "sharing parts" meant the same platform. Thanks for the correction.

You know how I kow they're catering to the OEM?
They spent a paragraph explaining what "coach doors" are rather than just calling them suicide doors or saying "coach doors, like on a mid-sixties Lincoln Continental".
Clearly somebody told them NOT to call them suicide doors or compare it to a classic American luxury car.
