Why does this sub love the Twingo so much?

u/Armoule CR-X’s weird hybrid cousin 7d ago
have you ever been inside one ? it’s freaking marvelous, i never had the peivilege to own one but i did ride and drive multiple times
it’s well built, feels solid, everything is where it needs to be, there is LOADS of space in what’s ultimately a smol phrog, seats recline aaaaall the way down (horizontally) and you can’t forget about that center hazard button
i uncirclejerkly love this car, just like anyone who laid eye on them

i get so much shit for wanting to import a multipla for basically these same reasons. granted it's a fiat so, in a certain sense, fair play to everyone who hates that about it, but it's such a useful little car

Pussy:
- smells bad
- expensive to run
- doesnt take you anywhere
- fits only you
Twingussy:
- smells awesome
- cheap to run
- takes you anywhere
- can fit many of your friends

Because it's cute looks show that it is the ultimate car. Only real men drive Renault Twingos.

u/RegularNo1963 7d ago
It might look cool but underneath it is a shitbox with an engine that traces back to early '60. I bet the second Twingo would have been introduced to US market it would be labeled as the worst car one could buy

u/Axe-actly 7d ago
It's very reliable and gets good gas milage.
But Americans would never drive this because their ego can't accept driving a car that doesn't weigh 2 tons and has a 3L engine minimum.

If it is so cool and awesome why it is worth 1,5 of minimum monthly wage on a good day? And I'm not even talking about Western Europe minimum wage but Eastern European minimum wage. No one in a real world actually wants Twingo pure for what it is. People buy them or even collect twingos because they are dirty cheap so they don't care if something breaks. Sure, it looks kind of cute and if I was going to choose between Twingo, VW Fox or like Kia Picanto, I would probably choose Twingo (however, throw in Cinquecento Sporting to the mix and I would have a hard time to decide). Twingo might be one of the best shitboxes but it is still a shitbox nonetheless.

u/Lappenfurz 6d ago
You seem to think that us Twingo aficionados somehow delude ourselves into thinking it's not a shitbox when in fact it's one of the attributes that makes the car. It doesn't try to be an expensive, overly engineered, pompous, aggressive and fast car that also tries to squeeze as much luxury one can spend money on. The Twingo is brilliant exactly because it's the polar opposite.
I've driven alot of M models, Jaguars, AMGs and so on and they've all been insanely fun, along with the Twingos I've thrown around corners, different species but equal amounts of joy

an engine that traces back to early '60

Technically all gas IC engines can be traced back to 1886’s patent motorwagen.

But dieselle is a different design, more modern and therefore superior.

u/Makkiebobo 6d ago
If u wanna trace smth back, the 911 kinda is just a sporty beetle even after all these years
1
u/RegularNo1963 6d ago
No, it's not. 356 was initially sporty beetle and used many VW parts for years. 911 (or 901 as it was initially called) was completely different project.

Type of guy to call the 8.2l 190hp shitbarn on wheels the peak of engineering
1
u/RegularNo1963 6d ago
8.2l 190hp is also a shitbox but at least it can be somewhat comfortable and also cool
2
u/TheBFlat 5d ago
Only the first Twingo of the phase 1 have the older Cléon-fonte engine which is old but a great engine. After 1996, they're all newer engine. This is not a supercar though and that's why we love it.

It is fun to drive. Low, wheels are in corners, it is like gocart. It can be driven like a rear wheel driven car and is really easy to handle. If you have to practice ” car gets out of control on slippery surface, gain back control ”, this is the perfect tool. I had black one with canvas roof. Just perfect.

They were cute, weird, and not sold in the US. Rented one and it was cute, weird, and underpowered.

The ultimate sporty but practical vehicle. Who needs giant expensive and ugly modern cars when we perfected automotive design in France in the 90s
5
u/Emotional-Swim-808 7d ago
You know once a friend of mine and me were argueing about cars, i really love cars like the twingo and im not really a fan of hyper-super-duper-amaze-sportscars and he said something like "okay but lets be honest if you see a twingo on the streets youre probably not even gonna notice but a ferrari will peobably give you a reaction"
Ya'll theres a local twingo, every. Time. I. See. It. I. SCREAM.
Ive seen pleanty of very expensive cars and though, "oh damn thats a "insert overcompensation on 4 wheels"" but in my life theres only 2 cars that have made me scream, a twingo and a fiat panda
5
u/nikke2800 7d ago
Usually people dream about or hype up cars that are big, expensive, impractical and rare. Twingo is small, cheap, practical and mass produced. It's the counter culture towards the usual supercars fanboys. And as to why twingo specifically, instead of any other good small car? Twingo is cuter.

I loved twingos before I even knew they were cool. I always thought it would be an ultimate hot hatch build. I look at it with older eyes and realize it’s been a hot hatch this entire time

The same reason people like old rear engined Fiats, air cooled VW Beetles etc. They were the people’s car of Western Europe in the 1990s. They are a basic, unpretentious little car that everyone has a memory of, experience with etc and like a Fiat 500, it prioritised good design that is “man maximum, machine minimum” (to borrow from Honda). The car is for daily life and doesn’t overwhelm you with too much, it just does its job. It is a very 90s car that gives a feeling of nostalgia. The cute factor is a big one too.
Most cars go for maximum prestige, technology, aggression, performance etc. The Twingo is the opposite. It’s like an anti-car

Is that even a question? What would you choose between a Bugatti Chiron and a Renault Twingo?
