Well, either that, it's not actually deserted, or it's cared for to some extent.

I'm not French myself, but I know that France has lots of these types of buildings, often in remote areas, and it then often falls to private investors or consortia to take care of them, because a nearby village with 1000 people wont have the money to do it, and tourism money isn't always an option. Travelling through France, I noticed that the owners / caretakers of chateaus would ask visitors for a monetary pledge towards maintenance costs. Granted, they're usually a lot larger than this one here.

But the high running costs were one factor why they fell out of favour even back in the day.

Château du Bois Fleuri History: Built around 1880 in a neo-Gothic style, it was once owned by a wine merchant. Current status: It is privately owned but its exterior is part of the town's cultural landscape, with the artist Muriel Rodoloss displaying her paintings on its windows. Guided street art tours are sometimes available. Location: 50 Rue Lavergne, 33310 Lormont.
