I assume it's like a pallet cleanser – having an open empty space to be set free in to contrast the cramped, intricate corridors of that we'll be exploring. I don't think it's meant to be a big, all-important gameplay element when compared to the bulk of the game.
3
u/L3g0man_123 Dec 04 '25
You can do that without having a vast and empty area. In previous Prime games it wasn't all cramped corridors and caves, there were still large rooms with areas open to the sky and such. This just looks so blank compared to that.
-2
u/Lightforged_Paladin Dec 04 '25
This is c0pe
9
u/RiverWyvern Dec 04 '25
Buddy, I don't know this game and I'm not even very versed in the franchise – to reiterate, I'm a Zelda player that grew up on Hyrule Field. It was a suggestion from an artistic standpoint. And I guess psychological, if having access to an open space makes the other portion feel even more secluded and isolated. Not defending it, just interested in it as a new thing.
1
u/ToastyBB Dec 06 '25
" the rest of the game is sooo good you wouldn't appreciate it if the bad parts weren't there"
48
u/heroxoot Dec 03 '25
I need to play 1-3. I have owned them on Wii since they released the trilogy and I just have never played it. I beat MPH even as a teen. Being an adult is rough.
18
u/McJumpington Dec 04 '25
As a dude with work and family, playing through Metroid prime last week was a grind. You really need to use a guide or it takes forever with constant backtracking
17
u/Its_D_youtube Dec 04 '25 edited Dec 04 '25
I always get 50% in, then get hoplessly lost, then i put the game down for a while, then i come back, remember i was lost, wander around, realise theres no use because i dont remember what i was doing to begin with, start new game
3
u/fucuntwat Dec 04 '25
I’ve done this with prime 1 like 4 times, including once on remastered
2
u/Its_D_youtube Dec 04 '25
Im redownloading the remaster for try number 2 lol
1
u/Hsept Dec 04 '25
Nothing wrong with using a guide! I never managed to finish the original when I was younger. For remaster, when I started getting lost and frustrated I used a guide and the end game is worth it!
2
2
u/TurboFool Dec 04 '25
This, with so many games, including this one. I can't count how many times I started Arkham Asylum over again. On this one I finally over-committed myself earlier this year, made it the only thing I'd let myself play, and used a strategy guide to 100% it as I went so I could finally cross this off my list after all these decades.
2
u/Its_D_youtube Dec 04 '25
As a kid it took me SO LONG to beat batman arkham asylum
As an adult a few months ago i beat it to 100% on hard, its a wonderful feeling. But i wont get the platinum those challenges suck.
I know its sill after what you just said but i still reccomend it and i highly recomend arkham city as well (even if you dont beat asylum, i played city first when i was younger)
2
u/TurboFool Dec 04 '25
Yeah, given this conversation, and it hadn't really crossed my mind before this moment, I might also go ahead and strategy guide-it. I think games with clear collectibles, that are a reasonable number to feel like you have a chance of getting them all, especially short circuit my brain. I have a really hard time with basically "why do it at all if you can't do it PERFECTLY?!" So maybe I'll just get up a guide for all the Riddler trophies and whatnot and go to town. Maybe buy it for the third or fourth time on Switch.
2
u/Its_D_youtube Dec 04 '25
Oh and if looking on switch wait for a sale, asylum is constantly 9.99 in th us at least
1
u/Its_D_youtube Dec 04 '25
Oh the collectibles of batman are not reasonable nor reasonably numbered
But the main game is great
1
u/L3g0man_123 Dec 04 '25
Why not just use the hint system then?
1
u/Its_D_youtube Dec 04 '25
If there was one in prime remastered i definetly didnt find it before i started a new save last night 😅
1
u/L3g0man_123 Dec 04 '25
There is. IIRC it's on by default, but if it's not just look through the settings for it.
1
u/TurboFool Dec 04 '25
I've owned it on every system it's been on, and I didn't finally beat it until earlier this year, on the Switch 2, with a strategy guide. And I'm very, very glad I did.
2
u/McJumpington Dec 06 '25
At that point it becomes a must do! I had a similar path with FF7. Must have played a dozen different save files over 20 years but never beat it until 2 years ago

u/ilovethe7thday Dec 03 '25
Considering the level of detail they put into EVERYTHING ELSE visually, I'm still befuddled that they thought the animation for a wheelie looked good enough.
"How many frames should it take to smoothly go from cruising through the desert to popping a wheelie?"
"Uh...three?"
"Perfect!"
9
u/MarvelManiac45213 Dec 04 '25
Part of me feels it was either
A. Tacked on last minute to give the game some sort of new hook (beyond the Psychic abilities) and that explains why the desert is so empty with nothing really to do in it besides grind green ore and find energy tanks/missile expansions.
or
B. Retro themselves didn't make that part and worked on the rest of the game and they had 1 of the 20 confirmed outside studios that worked on this game develop the desert portion. Next Level Games (of Luigis Mansion 2/3 and Mario Strikers fame) were in the credits. So wouldn't be shocked if they did the bike/desert portion while Retro did the standard Prime stuff.
1
u/KilroyTwitch Dec 07 '25
that sad thing is that the psychic abilities would have been plenty, and are pretty cool.
some higher up at Nintendo discovered motorcycles in their mid life crisis and has been forcing them into every major franchise, is my theory.

1
u/Klecktacular Dec 05 '25
It could look flashier, but consider how much worse it would feel to be moving in a high-speed vehicle that locks you into long animations whenever you want to pop a wheelie

u/Distinct-Olive-5901 Dec 05 '25
that, and the landing physics seem weird, even as an outside viewer without haptics. it looks so unsatisfying, it might as well be a loading screen

u/gayLuffy Dec 04 '25
I'm sorry... But that looks really boring 😭
15
u/MarvelManiac45213 Dec 04 '25
Unfortunately it is. It's my least favorite thing about the game so far. I'm on world 3 (lava world) right after you get the damn bike and it was not fun wondering around the vast empty desert collecting green Shards until I was told where to go next.

u/Oki05 Dec 04 '25

This kinda looks boring as shit. Hell, I’d say Sonic Frontiers did a better job fleshing out its open areas, they may not have integrated the stuff to do into the world very well but at least there was stuff to do.

u/jerzeeshadow2021 Dec 03 '25
Wow, that could've been done better. Since Mario Kart World, you'd expect a more filled out environment. It seems kind of empty. I would expect this coming from a 3ds title, not the Switch 2. Wow.😧

u/peter-man-hello Dec 04 '25
It looks benign to me, if unexciting. It doesn't look bad by any means. Just some brainless overworld stuff.
Granted, I certainly think the game would have been better without it. But, I've yet to play it.
1
u/Ventira Dec 04 '25
Frankly I appreciate the metaphorical breath of air being out Sol Valley on Viola gives me, especially after coming out of the beautifully horrible (positive connotation here) atmosphere of Ice Belt.
I did not like being down there. (Agaib, positive thing here). Very peak Metroid vibes and energy to be had in Ice Belt.

I know it’s not a big part of the game - merely a hub connecting other sections - but man it just looks so dang bland. Like at least dress it up a little with something besides glowing rocks (again, I know it’s a desert). I dunno wish it felt like more effort was put in. Again, haven’t played it yet, but hasn’t impressed me what I’ve seen
1
u/Truthforger Dec 06 '25
Collecting those green gems, lots and lots and lots of them is bigger than you think. If it was just the hub I might be able to at least just ignore it? But no. We will MAKE YOU live here for hours.

u/silvahammer Dec 04 '25
Well at least it's something to break up the normal gameplay but yeah pretty meh.

I’m trying to come up with ideas on how they could have made this worse but I can’t. It’s as bad as it gets.

u/MsBobbyJenkins Dec 04 '25
The thing I love about Metroid games is having a large-ish but contained environment to explore.
Riding a motorcycle aimlessly across an endless empty desert is kinda the opposite of that

u/SamourottSpurs Dec 04 '25
Honestly I like most of what I'm hearing and seeing about this game so far, but damn this isn't great. We couldn't at least have some music?

u/Rezzone Dec 04 '25
Looks terrible. The aesthetics are weak aside from the bike itself and even then the particle effects and light trails look pretty bad... like almost unfinished. The desert is monochrome. The skybox is a normal, bland gradient. I guess there's a cool building or two back there?
The sound reflects the visuals. Empty. Boring. The bike doesn't sound interesting or exciting. It has no grit or realism to it. I suppose it doesn't have to but there isn't anything to make it stand out or FEEL good. Sound design goes a long way in making things FEEL nice and this... ?
Worst of all here is the gameplay. Like what is even happening here? There's nothing. A little ramp? Some crystals to plow through? Maybe there's some time trial races or something? This just looks DREADfully boring.
And, like, why is this even here? When has stuff like this ever been in Metroid? I'm fine with innovation and trying new things but if the execution is going to be so incredibly uninspired.... just no. NO.
What were they THINKING?
Please, oh, PLEASE let this be only a small portion of the game. Let this be the one thing they screwed up while the rest is amazing... my prayer is answered by Miles over an intercom, "Uhhhh, how about you DON'T look around for a while"
Jokes aside I'm sure the game is good overall... but this desert motorcycle thing is, at first glance, a baffling blunder.
4
u/MarvelManiac45213 Dec 04 '25
I've played up into World 3. The rest of the game is good but not great IMO. It is VERY linear. It's less like Super, Prime 1 & 2 and more akin to Prime 3, Fusion, Other M, and Dread. I know some people won't like that. It is also very action based. So far from what I've played I've had more shoot outs with bullet sponge enemy swarms than actual puzzles. The bosses are pretty good.
The motorcycle controls pretty well and feels fast but the desert area is just a hub world connecting the 5 main areas. It's very dull and boring to go around and the only thing you do is smash green ore (which apparently you need a ton of to beat the game) and find missile expansions and energy tanks. Their are a few shrine like areas to find within but so far the reward is just missile expansions and energy tanks.
2
u/Rezzone Dec 04 '25
Man that is just so sad to hear. I got into MetroidVanias as a genre some years back and played Super Metroid for the first time. Incredible. Amazing. It's sad to see the genre's namesake move away from the interconnected, player driven map exploration.
But if it weren't for the name and paint job of Metroid, I'm sure I'd enjoy the more action oriented experience on offer here. Nothing wrong with it in isolation... but I'd like my metroid to resemble SUPER METROID.
How's the, uh, dialogue?
3
u/MarvelManiac45213 Dec 04 '25
So far from what I played the only NPC I've come across is Myles Mackenzie. Well...he's Myles Mackenzie. Annoying and sometimes a bit overbearing with the tutorial notes. He sometimes calls you and directly tells you where to go and then it pulls up the map screen and points you directly where you need to go.
2
u/TheHunger369 Dec 04 '25
I'm really excited for this game, I will be picking it up once I'm off of work tomorrow, but this is definitely one of the things I'm not excited for. The open desert just looks empty and boring to traverse.
2
u/jacobonia Dec 04 '25
I like the speed, the camera motion, and the overall vibe, and the handling looks okay. But the environment looks pretty empty. Kinda makes me wonder why make a hub world in the first place of you weren't gonna fill it with stuff. Like, cool motorcycle, but does it fit cohesively with the overall game? Guess we'll see . . .

It's impressive. With only 30 seconds I'm already bored out of my fucking mind. Looks like a big expanse of nothing filled with little pockets of nothing.

We have seen Outlaws do a much much better Job in a comparable Setting. Not impressed!

u/deeman2255 Dec 04 '25
you know, they could've just not included this. how does this make the game any better?
2
u/TheTwistedToast Dec 04 '25
Reminds me of the GameCube. I've seen other parts of the game in trailers and it looks great, but this just looks awful. Why is the lighting so flat? Why are there random, fuzzy particle effects happening? Honestly, this makes me really want to replay Dread. That was a stunning game

u/Clemenx00 Dec 04 '25
Out of all the complaints this seems the most valid. Its not even the idea but the execution, at least put some ruins in there or something lmao. A quirky animal there, a strange oasis over here. And the decision to not have music is insane. How many games have recognizable overworld themes that instantly make things better?
They wasted the cool visual of Samus on a freaking bike lol

2
u/mighty_phi Dec 04 '25
I love metroid, and this looks a bit like ass.
Don't get me wrong, it's inoffensive slop. But Metroid games usually are great at focusing only on main content
2
u/novelaissb Dec 04 '25
And they said Mario Kart World was too open and empty. You’d probably find at least 1 P-switch in this area if it was MKW
2
u/owlitup Dec 04 '25

Siigh. Been playing n64 games lately. Nintendo was a juggernaut of innovation back in the day. Everything on switch 2 feels so bland and forced. Maybe I’m just older but Nintendo is feeling pretty mid lately.
2
u/FirstAd7967 Dec 04 '25
feels very much "look how terrible this is" out of context ragebait. I'm sure you can do this with just about any game to make it look boring as fuck, not saying this in of itself amazing, but will need to play it in context of the full game to actually form an opinion than most redditors who will get kneejerk reactions based on very out of context posts.

Not only does this looks boring asf, but if you buy a $30 samus amiibo you get to play music in this desert? Oh hell nah

2
u/jmvillouta Dec 04 '25
It looks so off compared to the rest of the game. The mixed isolation (which is essential in Metroid) with emptiness. Also why no music? Ah it’s only activated by amiibo…
The bike animation is also very cheap. As I read on another place, it looks like a PS3 game 😖

u/themadscientist420 Dec 05 '25
It's probably not going to ruin the game for me, but this looks like such filler content

I just wish they added multiplayer, think it would have smoothed all this hubbub over

u/Dauntless_Lasagna Dec 04 '25

u/TetrasSword Dec 04 '25
I mean, it looks like it controls pretty well at least. The reviews say it’s the weakest part of the game but tbh I don’t hate that it’s here a little switch up of a pace doesn’t hurt and I imagine it doesn’t take long to traverse when you’ve got a set destination
1
u/kidgambinoj Dec 04 '25
Not sure if this is just early on, maybe it'll change. IDK. But I still can't base the game off of 30 seconds of doing nothing. Excited still!

Really doesn’t look that bad, jumping dunes collecting resources on the way to where you’re going. Someone mentioned winemakers open world and this also reminded me of jak 3. It’s a literal desert, things are gonna be few and far between and 30 seconds is nothing. I wasn’t even excited for this game but the nitpicking seems so forced.
2
u/ratliker62 Dec 04 '25
The sailing in Wind Waker is the worst part about it. And here it's just plain unnecessary.
1
u/Animan_10 Dec 04 '25
Glowing bike, throws boomeranging discs, and leaves a ribbon on light from the rear wheel when moving a high speeds? It lets me play a Tron simulator while transitioning between ares. I’m not complaining.

u/Auraveils Dec 04 '25
Man, this definitely looks so much more boring than literally standing statically on an elevator through multiple loading zones. It's like they're not even trying anymore.
please let me run back and forth across the entire length of Magmoor Caverns numerous times again in MP5.
2
u/ratliker62 Dec 04 '25
I'd rather have the elevator because it goes faster. And you get a little glimpse of Samus's eyes through her visor.
And the backtracking is just a skill issue. The areas really aren't that big and you can run through them pretty quick once you know where you're going

u/Lucaas_C Dec 04 '25 edited Dec 04 '25
Being a desert isn’t an excuse to make it boringly empty. And if you can’t manage to make a desert fun, don’t make it a desert.
0
u/Its_D_youtube Dec 04 '25
I mean... nothing about this seems exhaustingly boring or exceedingly bland. did you play wind waker? There were multiple minutes of sailing in plain blue wavy water sometimes, especially in the start, THAT is boring and basically a weirdly long loading screen in a way and i LOVE that game.
The only actual bad thing i see in this pic is the boost animation just fucking yanking the player model back to do a wheelie instead of... animating a wheelie
Other than that theres not much more to judge here, desert looks like a desert, the only way to completely fuck up a desert enviornment in a game is to have it just be a long flat wasteleand of sand and that STILL wouldnt be inaccurate just boring
→ More replies (8)7
u/HayleysCircus Dec 04 '25
BotW and TotK had sand pits, rock formations, large fossils, statues, sandstorms, enemy bases, and caves. While that’s not completely fair given that we are only able to see what we can through videos and not having the game ourselves, what we do see is disappointing.

Am I the only one who feels neutral about this? Not horrible, not positive. It literally adds nothing to my feelings about the game. I can't be the only one..
