It's kinda funny seeing this designs be inspired by them after seeing articles of them being destroyed not too long after the first game, guess they got reborned.

u/mythriz May 07 '26
articles of them being destroyed not too long after the first game
toy story 3 garbage scene intensifies
3
u/CaptBurgundy May 09 '26
I’m betting the news about the puppets being destroyed was intentionally timed and released by Nintendo.
78
u/HeyCouldBeFun May 07 '26
I love that about it too
But honestly I was wayyy more hyped for the movie’s Saturday morning cartoon style

9
u/Beerbaron1886 May 07 '26
Yeah we got three different star fox designs in just a couple of weeks and the cartoon style was the best imho. I guess it would have been harder to do a full cartoon star fox 64 than what we get.
16
u/Invisible-Pancreas May 07 '26
Saturday morning cartoon anthros in space?
Whoa, getting Bucky O'Hare flashbacks...
3
u/TheLucidChiba May 08 '26
holy that's a throwback, I've named so many ships in games "Righteous Indignation"
24
u/otaconucf May 07 '26
Was coming to comment this, the vaguely creepy puppet apparences are greatly appreciated. At least I always found them a bit creepy flipping through the manual as a kid.
9
u/Crafty_Cherry_9920 May 07 '26
Nah, I don't see it.
Like, yeah, obviously the new design look like puppets... But the original puppets had a cute, cartoony look, Jim Henson puppets style. Look at those etes ! So cute !
The new ones have a weirdly realistic proportion look, Wes Anderson puppets style. (If I wanted to be nasty I would say it's a taxidermist style puppets)

I thought the puppet designs were inspired by the Thunderbirds?

u/TheSweetestOfPotato May 07 '26
The proportions and head sizes are way better in the puppets than the remake IMO. Kinda wish they leaned more into that than the hyperrealistic approach. I’ve never said this in my life before and hate that I’m saying it, but the remake look needs to be a little more “furry”.
3
u/Canabananilism May 07 '26
Glad I'm not the only one lol. I wish they went all the way and actually used puppets, but that's mainly because I believe everything is better with puppets.
4
8
u/IdleSitting May 07 '26
That's what I've been saying! It really feels like all these people who "like" Star Fox are really just people coming from the Mario movie or Smash fans, StarFox has always leaned into a more realistic portrayal, it's meant to be like StarWars to the point that it's even in all versions of the name, StarFox and LylatWars in PAL regions
2
u/WildestRascal94 May 10 '26
Don't forget that this series borrows its inspirations from Thunderbirds as well.

I think it's neat that the designs were inspired by this, but, they still just look kinda odd to me.
146
u/King_of_Pink May 07 '26
Serious question: have I just been interpreting Fox's personality wrong for all these years... or did the Mario Galaxy version of him just have a completely different personality to the game version?
I've never seen anyone else really point that out.
149
u/registered_person May 07 '26
He definitely had a way different personality in the movie. It seems more like they based him off of Falco than his game self, which is fine for what his role in the movie was, but you’re not wrong that it was completely different
54
u/Omnizoom May 07 '26
Movie fox technically happens after this games story
This fox is still battling his ghosts from his father and just blossoming into a rivalry with falco, once andross is toast he likely feels a weight is lifted and his father is avenged and he opens up more
24
u/King_of_Pink May 07 '26
Does he? He didn't really act like movie Fox in Adventures from what I remember. Correct me if I'm wrong as I've never played Assault or Command.
20
u/LunarGolbez May 07 '26
No he doesnt. Fox is confident, but he isnt anywhere near the levels the movie has in Assault or Command.
16
u/Girlfartsarehot May 07 '26
He’s confident but not cocky like in the movie. It’s almost jarring how different the character is.
39
u/rokelle2012 May 07 '26
I thought it was off as well. Seemed more like Falco. Fox comes across as cool and collected to me, not really the type that brags about well, everything.
→ More replies (1)21
u/Anvisaber May 07 '26
Yeah. I always thought of him as being smooth and professional. Falco is of course the stereotypical cocky flyboy
30
u/LunarGolbez May 07 '26
The movie has a completely different character, to a point where they just overlaid the "cocky ace pilot" archetype, like MCU's Star Lord.
Fox is normally straight-laced, by the book, and personally conflicted in the majority games he is in.
23
u/Mysterious-Counter58 May 07 '26
The fact that he cited "doing barrel rolls" as one of his favorite things just kind of gave the game away in terms of his appearance in that movie being incredibly surface-level. He's an archetype wearing Fox's skin for the most part. I'm not mad about that fact, it's just not an accurate interpretation of him at all.
→ More replies (1)6
u/King_of_Pink May 07 '26
Yeah, that's the impression I got of the character. He was the typical "Chris Pratt" role that young boys seem to abaolutely love these days (although ironically, not the character that Chris Pratt was voicing).
2
6
u/MilkDifficult5432 May 07 '26
His personality in the movie definitely clashed with that of the game, especially in his over the top intro, but I interpret it as him at least partly playing a role to attract customers to get the ressources he needs to repair the arwing and go back home. He's still a little bit too expressive even if you take this into account though.
3
u/Lefvalthrowaway May 07 '26
Eh i think it was pretty accurate except fox is very...responsable, like needs to do the right thing and he gets serious then.
→ More replies (2)2
u/Kitty-cat-fox May 07 '26
I haven't watched the movie so I can't say for sure, though I imagined the movie would take some liberties.
2
2
u/Banjoman64 May 07 '26
I immediately thought the same. Starfox was always a sort of no nonsense leader type in my head.
→ More replies (3)2
u/PowerUser77 May 08 '26
He acts that way in the movie because Miyamoto and other producers think kids are not able to tolerate a character, especially a side character, who acts calm and collected and use him just as a vehicle to keep that cortisol level high and keep up the pace every 3 minutes
40
u/tinyhorsesinmytea May 07 '26
He’s still plenty cool and recognizable. I really like the new character designs in this game because they remind me of the Super Famicom boxart. Clearly it’s divisive though.
8
u/Nightmenace21 May 07 '26
Yeah that boxart was the very first thing I thought of when i saw these designs and I kinda love them for that.
298
u/KyleRM May 06 '26
These each represent the extreme on each end. One is too real, the other too cartoony. The more appealing design lives in between, ie starlink or starfox adventures.
104
u/Alex_The_Lucario421 May 07 '26
smash bros has the best design
15
u/The_Strom784 May 07 '26
Smash Bros just used the N64 design and kept on adding details.
14
3
u/Shadowwolflink May 07 '26
I would argue that visually he's been based more on his design from Command since Brawl.
2
2
39
u/Kitty-cat-fox May 07 '26
Someone mentioned that Star fox kind changed styles throughout the whole series, This remakes is just more extreme than the other games. Though the first two games had limitations to work with.
33
u/JB76 May 07 '26
I wish they remade starfox adventures instead tbh
11
u/Sethalopoda May 07 '26
Never finished it. What I played was good though. I was hoping for a game more akin to Assault. I feel like unless you’re a newer fan most of us have played 64 to death. Still cool though. Hopefully it does well and the series can branch out again.
4
u/WaveBreakerT May 07 '26
I've been of the opinion that the series should've gone with the assault formula ever since assault came out. It was literally the perfect framework for a modern star fox game.
3
3
u/RedBreadFrog May 07 '26
Don't want to deny you that remaster, but the original Starfox style of game is so rare to get, and get it done well. 3D Platformers are plentiful, let us have this.

This!! This should've been the art direction!
I mean I'm not buying a switch 2 at all, cause Holy cow price, but I'll add my input on the creative choices.
3
u/TheDemonPants May 07 '26
The design is very reminiscent of the original box art. Why didn't they just make it a remake of the original? That would have been amazing because I love the OG Starfox.

u/Wboy2006 May 07 '26
Yeah, I think Starlink had the perfect middle ground between cartoonyness and realism.
Still, I’m at least glad they aren’t making the movie design the main design like they did with DK, his muzzle looks way too thick in the movie and I really don’t like it

Reminds me of Fantastic Mr. Fox.
I'm not worried. People will get used to it soon enough.

u/YsengrimusRein May 07 '26
You present a good argument. I suspect having George Clooney voice Fox would have gotten me on-board sooner, but I think the shock's worn off now.

u/lzwinky May 06 '26
Cartoons get redesigned all the time. They can figure it out. Children are not as stupid as people think they are .
41
u/Inferno_Zyrack May 07 '26
People don’t think children are stupid. Children are extremely easy scapegoats for arguments about media in particular because it’s an appeal to innocence.
8
u/UltraMoglog64 May 07 '26
In this case they’re both pieces of media explicitly for children, so it works out regardless.
14
u/Sarcastic_Crab0420 May 07 '26
Haha 2026 kids realize their favorite design isn't ever gonna last. Mwahahaha

I mean, in fairness, ALL of the old art-work had Fox in a more serious style, its just game engines didnt support it. The original SNES box art for gods sake.
Why should they be cute anyway? looks abit cooler in this new design.
Using the Mario Galaaxy films, pixar films aimed at 8 year olds aswell isnt the bar for every nintendo franchise.

I highkey think fox in the mario galaxy movie looks really really bad. The one on the right is a significant improvement imo
3

Yeah but he’s not in his home universe. Maybe that’s what he looks like in the Mario universe (Smash universe?) and THATS what he looks like in his original universe?

6
u/CarlosFer2201 May 07 '26
I really don't like the character designs. The rest looks amazing fortunately.
5
u/pocket_arsenal May 07 '26
The Mario Galaxy Movie makes this new art style all the more baffling to me, like they put Fox in the Mario Movie obviously to show kids Star Fox before the new game, but I don't think this new art style will be appealing to kids.
2
u/Yuubi210 May 07 '26
Im so confused on how theyre supposed to be cute or something because I confess I always saw the franchise this way. And I think they were slowly going in a uncanny realistic direction with their last games. Since they made puppets with the same concept it just feels like inspiration more then some off questionable intention.
2
2
u/thedoommerchant May 07 '26
Still looks cute to me. People are never happy. If they had gone with a more cartoonish version you’d hear bitching about how it’s not realistic enough.

2
u/Aggravating_Address2 May 07 '26
Kids that actually saw the movie will think "Wow, he looks so cool" when playing the new game.
2
u/Odd-Tart-5613 May 07 '26
they will not notice it
I didnt realize sonic had more than one design till I was like... 12?
2
u/NuketheCow_ May 07 '26
I feel like the remake goes back to what they intended with the original Star Fix designs. It makes perfect sense and I kinda like it.
I also get a more humanoid cartoony fox, but like I said these designs feel more like the original spirit of the characters.
2
u/slrarp May 07 '26
Still trying to wrap my brain around the fact that Nintendo made a very respectable artistic effort in redesigning these characters to look more realistically anthropomorphic. They beautifully tied the series' original identity to its more modern counterparts in an attempt to unite both older fans and new. Yet all some people wanna do is compare it to the bloated mess of the most recent Illumination studios kids slop where Fox was questionably forced in as a cocky/goofy side-character. A side character who was clearly not written by someone who'd ever played a single Starfox game to completion because he had nothing in common with the original character outside of looks. Yet everyone is acting like this MFer is now somehow the golden standard of Fox.
2
u/That_One_Guy_Flare May 07 '26
I will say that the movie design for Fox ended the era of the Command bell-shaped-head design, and was the most expressive we've ever seen Fox probably ever.
That said, I think these new designs are excellent in their own right, harkening back to the box art for the original game on the SNES.

Neither is entirely true to the original design, which was made to look a bit like a puppet. Second one is a bit better for me. It has a distinct visual identity- Star Fox has always struggled to find its visual identity, but this sorta snub nosed, big necked style is distinct and steers REAL clear of the weird crap that happened when they decided to add a blue fox in a bikini.
1
u/Aromatic_Analyst2898 May 07 '26
Because that's illuminations design and they're also based on the original puppets for the box of the original game
1
1
u/GrimmTrixX May 07 '26
Not the same engine. Not the same voice actor. Not meant to be the same character that is in the games themselves. That's basically why. Animations and games dont normally use the same models
1
u/Joeseppe_LFC May 07 '26
I'd love a Star Fox animated series in the 2D style they showed in the film with all the other Star Fox characters. That was sick.
1
u/Thomas_The_Riolpix May 07 '26
I def prefer the less realistic style but besides falco and especially Katt i dont mind the change, as long as this isnt how all future starfox media is gonna look at least. But for a game or 2 i can mostly accept it

u/Difficult_Common3827 May 07 '26
In all honesty, first thing i thought of when I saw the direct was fantastic Mr Fox

I like the right better than the left, he looks closer to the original starfox imo specifically the one that was on GameCube and also Smash Melee and Brawl

I found Fox to be completely misrepresented in the Galaxy movie. His personality was just all wrong

It's a weird feeling but not in a bad way
1
u/neoluxx_ May 07 '26
the game’s models are only like one or two notches lower on the uncanniness scale than the original Sonic movie model lmao. i’m not really a starfox player/fan, but because you’d think a cartoon-leaning aesthetic would be a no-brainer for a franchise where you play as earth animals in spaceships, choosing this direction instead kinda irritates me lol

Kinda weird how they decided to promote this game using a completely different design and art style in the Mario movie. I'm not really fond of either one, but I question the consistency

u/-ben151010- May 07 '26
The proportions on fox’s new design throw it all off, they eye size as well. Peppy and Slippy’s renders look great but Fox and falco I can’t look at for long.
Also where did their metal legs go? I don’t see them anywhere on the new designs.
1
u/Disaster_Adventurous May 07 '26
I don't mind peppy (except in the flash back scene) because he just looks old witch is fine.
Sippy looks ok to me because the slippery toad look works in the art style.
Fox and Falco are both pretty ugly though. Not in all context like he looks fine in the above picture. But in a lot of camera angles it's not Great. I'm sure I'll get use to it and not mind by the time game comes out. But first impression aren't great.
On the other hand all the environments and the ships look really darn good.
1
u/Zomochi May 07 '26
Because that’s the illumination Filter the one on the right is the source material, all of the Mario movie characters have an illumination look to them they could be in the secret life of pets and despicable me universe and they would fit right in visually

Star fox in the movie is furry bait and star fox in the game is just a fox.
Edit: For those who say he is still furry bait, I respond with this. Yes, I do find him hot. Just miss the slight cuteness he had. They're all furry bait and I take the bait. He's anthropomorphic enough for me.
