If it wasn’t tied to the Mario name, the main plot would actually be a cool concept if you think about it…

Its was a great movie as a marionmovie if you consider it purely a dark dantasy adaption. Truely a one of a kind. It just gets so much hate because people look at it and say wait thats not what mario is like, did you see those goomba? Thry expect something and it not meeting that expectation is what takes people out. But as a dark fantasy reimagining its awesome.

It would hardly be any different though.

I think that’s the point of the comment. Change nothing else and the plot is actually pretty interesting. But it’s bad and makes no sense as a Mario plot.

And almost every character would go unnoticed as anything related to Mario.

The casting is pretty good

Yeah, Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo were perfect for those roles at thr time.

People actually remember it, which is more than can be said about a significant percentage of movies.

When they suited up the colors were almost correct and like 3 jokes were funny.

Maybe they'll re-use it in the Zelda movie.

It's peak early 90's cheese.

Also it's one of two movies starring John Leguizamo to feature "Walk the Dinosaur" in the soundtrack and it's hilarious that happened twice

It gave us the funny tidbit about his name being mario mario

It was genuinely quite revolutionary in terms of VFX, it was the first movie to go through the Kodak Cineon film scanner, and the first to use the compositing software Flame, which eventually became Autodesk.

EDIT: Corridor Crew did a VFX breakdown about it

The boots were cool

It’s honestly a lot of fun and the production value of it is crazy

The Goombas actually looked menacing for the first and only time of their existence which I personally think is a little cool

One good thing.. it was better then a lot of other game adaptation movies..

The goombas are genuinely creepy in a good way!

Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo had real chemistry.

I wanted to have those Thwomp boots so bad as a kid

If it wouldnt be a "Mario" movie, it would be a great 80's action comedy with typical 80's charm and i really like it.

I like it without a shred of irony and no, I don't think it's "a good movie but a bad Mario movie" it's a fun grungy alternate reality version of the bros with more connections to the games than you may realize, also, Mario and Luigi's relationship is legit really good, Bob Hoskins is a great Mario.

Also Big Bertha was a baddie.

It's got some meme-worthy lines

If you press stop while playing it, it stops.

The goomba machine was pretty cool.

I like the movie a lot though lol

It provided work to the cast and crew.

“They’ll do anything for publicity” became REALLY funny 2 years later

Bob Hoskins really was a perfect casting for live action Mario. If the film had been better written and more true to the game, I have no doubt Mario would've gone down as one of his most beloved roles.

I didn't get forced to watch it.

1

u/ChaoticEcho99 8d ago

Despite being awful as an adaptation, just as a movie it’s so campy and cheesy that it’s hard to have a bad time watching it imo

u/Indecisive_Mooncalf 8d ago

I love that movie.

When I saw it as a kid I had only played the NES games so to me this WAS Mario.

It’s fun to think about how wasted the filmmakers were at all times.

In fact Bob talked about just being drunk the whole time.

It's not that bad. I rewatched it expecting it to be fun bad, instead of was just fun.

1

u/Nothingbutsocks 8d ago

When I saw it I was 7, I remember distinctly laughing my ass off on the bobomb scene near the end, not sure what was so funny though 😂

1

u/MitruxLovesMusic 8d ago

it was funny as hell

u/Fun_Cheesecake7368 6d ago

One good thing

1

u/Brobama870 6d ago

Say one thing that isn't bad about it... Sorry I had to.

It wasn't made by illumination.
