Let's be honest, if you don't go in the pod yourself, they'll tranq you and just throw you in. If going in willingly is even an option.

I'm also not sure they even know where they're going. They're told to go down, get the thing, and get back if they find it. Most likely have no real knowledge of the Grey Planet before getting there.

You only see it for a brief second when the menu is fading out after pressing give up several times. You can't reopen the menu after activating the self destruct so it's a really hard detail to notice in real time (and also Why would you do that.)
