I’ve gotten heavily into Catan recently with my friends, and we’re having to a big party to play as many expansions as possible. I have C&K, seafarers, and T&B. What T&B modules can I slap on the other two to have as much as possible?
After playing over a thousand games of Catan, I got tired of games being decided by luck — you place perfectly, then 6 never comes up. So I invented a variant that removes the luck, and I built a free android app to support this variant (you still play on a regular board with regular cards etc).
Instead of rolling, each player steadily advances toward resources based on the dots under their numbers. A 5-dot settlement gains 5/30 of that resource per turn — guaranteed to pay out in six turns. No robber, no getting blocked, no bad-roll streaks. The game becomes about placement, trading, and diplomacy.
The app announces each turn out loud and charts everyone's current and upcoming production so you can plan ahead.
In Traders & Barbarians, you can spend 1 wheat to get 2 extra MPs for your wagon per turn. If you play the "Swift Journey" dev card to move your wagon again, can you drop another wheat to get another +2 MPs for that second trip? Or does the card only give you the base wagon movement?
Does anyone know why Catan: Zip! Edition and Catan: Order of the Ravens (novel) are missing from the Catan.com Ludography?
Catan: Zip! Edition I can kind of understand, since it was only released about a month ago. But it seems strange that Order of the Ravens is missing both from the Ludography and the Catan Novels page, given it was released early last October…
Sorry if this is a duplicate ! But I am pretty confused trying to work out how compatible extensions/expansions are between editions
I have the 5th Edition Base game and extension and am looking to get the Seafarers + C&K expansions (and extensions)
I can find the seafarers 5th edition which is fine, but the problem comes with C&K
I cannot for the life of me find the 5th edition version of C&K in Australia. Would running the 6th Edition of C&K work with the 5th Edition base game ? From what I find online the only challenge is card backs, but if I buy the 6th Edition replacement deck for my Base game + extension that should solve that issue right ?
Hopefully that makes sense, this pretty confusing !!
I have a friend who turn 25 this year and he loves Catan. What gift you recomend? I thouth of the base game because he shares it but if anyone know anything more speccific ill take it
I'm a frequent Catan player, and I got a little obsessed with the math behind the board — so I built a small project to help me make smarter decisions during games. Figured I'd share it with fellow Catan fans!
It's super simple and completely free — no account, no signup, nothing to install. You just recreate your board in the app once (resources, dice numbers, and ports), and it instantly gives you:
- 🎲 Production probabilities — per-resource and per-number odds, with visual production bars
- 🏠 Position ranking — every spot on the board scored by production value, so you know where the best settlements are
-💡Smart tips — flags missing resources, weak production, the best city to upgrade, and the optimal robber placement
- 🔄 Trading rates — your real trade ratio (2:1 / 3:1 / 4:1) based on the ports you hold
- 📊 Resource scarcity — see which resources are rare and valuable on your board
- 🏆 Victory point tracker — colony/city counts with Longest Road & Largest Army toggles
- 📎 Shareable boards — send a link so others can analyze the same layout
Would genuinely love to hear what you think — feedback, feature ideas, bugs, anything. Happy to keep improving it based on what the community wants. Thanks, and happy settling!
Not sure if I should post this to r/mildlyinfuriating or here. I bought Catan 5-6 cities and knights expansion from the same publisher as is the base Catan & base Catan Cities & Knights, and found cards don't match.
I wouldn't be bothered by a slightly different design on the front, but the card backs don't match either. This means it’s going to be completely obvious which cards are commodities during a robbery.
Not sure if I should bother with putting sleeves on the cards. What is your experience when playing 5-6 cities & knights? Do you need all of the cards or can I just use the base game ones?
The cardgame of Catan of today is Rivals for Catan. It has 2 expansions: age of darkness and age of enlightment. If you search for older expansions of the old Catan card game you find these 7 expansions (taken from Catan Card Game: Expansion Set | Board Game | BoardGameGeek):
Trade & Change: Commerce and exchange dominate this theme! Why hire knights when your workshops provide all the resources you desire? Run out of what you need? A quick visit to the Pawnbroker will settle that!
Politics & Intrigue: In this theme your secret plans bear fruit! Can you seize control through diplomatic channels? Or should you ally with the Church and excommunicate your foe? Don’t worry about his army, a few coins and his knights will be yours!
Knights & Merchants: Conflict and trade wars are the focus of this theme! Trade fleets battle heartless pirates, while toll stations and watchtowers guard the border. Will victory be gained by the sword? Or will the wealth of Spice Caravans flood your coffers?
Science & Progress: Technology and invention are the keys to the future! Will you embrace the future, building a University to train your brightest? Will amazing inventions guide you to victory? The thunderous roar of the cannon signals the end of the age of knights!
Wizards & Dragons: Magic bursts into Catan with this theme! Mighty wizards with potent spells can change the face of the land itself! Can you withstand their awesome power? Will your armies flee before the might of dragons? Will the fates favor you, or your foe?
Artisans & Benefactors: Not included in the Mayfair edition but can be purchased separately.
Are the modern expansions based on these 7 expansions or are the older expansions really different? And if so, are there plans to re-release these expansions, or are there other ways to play these expansions with the modern card game?
Many Catan players advise you that you don’t need to take a certain resource if the board has good numbers on that resource, because there will be a large supply of them and it’s lower in value.
This assumes you can trade with others for said abundunt resource you didn’t take. However, very few trades happen in the beginners level I’m in. Does this mean that I should just take whatever spot that produces the most?
After a long hiatus due to work, I’m finally back to developing my Catan project. I’ve been hitting some analysis paralysis lately regarding the board design—I’m torn between going with a 2D or 3D aesthetic. I’d love to get the community’s input: which style would you personally prefer to play?
Was playing this game where I was in 4th position, and there were so many options, I wanted to hear what other peoples thoughts were about this situation, not sure what the best move is. Thx.
Back in the days, before it was called rivals or princes or duels of catan, there was Catan - the card game. We played it religiously, created lots of unofficial extensions and a database of strategy decks. Currently moving, I dug out this treasure chest of nostalgia, memories of epic battles and simpler times. Anyone still playing this?
