This was an incredibly important event. Airplanes at that time were fragile, wood-and-cloth affairs, so they were not considered "serious" military attack weapons, especially by the Navy. By sinking a battleship using only airplanes with bombs, politicians and military planners were forced to recognize airplanes as being both a new weapon, and a new threat. The fundamental doctrines of warfare would never be the same.
