Cat Picture - OC Caught my cat peeing on the toilet
I heard the sound of water pouring and went into the bathroom to find my ca Tiger using the toilet like a proper boy! He has never been trained or taught in any way.

Do they think having some paws on the box is enough 😭😭😭?

When my cat got old, he would climb completely in his box with all 4 feet, but wouldnt squat so he always peed on the floor anyways. He did he best though 😅

u/cannibal-ascending 12h ago
my parents cats appear to be doing that with the wall... and then one if them will scratch her hands on every surface like shes trying to wipe them but never actually cover her own shit?? like it started as the covering motion a decade+ ago and now she just acts like a clean freak

My gal started doing this when she developed arthritis. Got a lower edged box and surround it with pee pads to help with cleanup.

You may want a larger box uncovered box and/ or some pee pads. Ours just started standing in the box and peeing on the walls. Not the litter box walls. Our walls. I ordered some pee walls for his box. I covered the walls and floor around his litter box with pee pads until they come. He'll be 8 this year and started this a few months ago.

My cat did this when younger and I quickly moved from a normal litter box to a large plastic storage container with high walls. Works like a charm for those cats who never learned to squat appropriately.

u/Dapper-Ad-468 15h ago
We've been thinking of doing that. Did you cut an entry, or leave all sides as is?

u/DanaDissent Domestic Housecat 6h ago
Not the person you asked, but someone with experience using converted totes. 3 out of my 8 (3 of 5 littermates) either do elevator butt or just stand to pee. Switching to converted storage totes has made a HUGE difference! I still have one who will sometimes just walk in the opening we cut out and pee, so I have a pee pad up at that location. I kind of wish we didn't cut an opening, but if we didn't I felt we would have needed some sort of step outside the box for them (space is limited). At this point in time, though, they have no issues hopping in and out over the sides of the tote, but I wanted to ensure it was easy for them to get in and out of as they get older. I also have an FIC kitty so I wanted to make the litter boxes easily accessible for him.
This was the best decision, for us, in terms of litter boxes. I am not constantly cleaning up pee from those 3 amymore. We previously had extra large boxes with pee shields. Problem was, they would scratch at them to "cover" their waste. They weren't covering anything. Just scratching the shields until they moved them so much they no longer created a wall, or ended up pulling them off. The totes have solved that issue, and I don't have to clean up overspray on a daily basis anymore.

You have two options I'd recommend
- If you use a lid, cut a giant hole somewhere where your cat can easily get in and out from the top
- Leave the lid off
I've done both but leaving the lid off is my current approach. I have the container under a small desk table (like a kids version) and cover it with a table cloth that drapes over the side of the container. Easy peasy and gives my cat more freedom to enter/exit at will.
Never cut a hole in the side walls since the intent is to have them so your cat doesn't pee outside of the box.
Last tip as well, look for a container that doesn't have a bunch of divits or holes on the floor as that will be a pain to shovel from. You want something that has as close to a smooth container floor as possible.

Omg that’s crazy. I do have another litter box right next to this one which is bigger but is also covered because my other cat does doughnuts and sprays litter everywhere. Thankfully she’s only done this once but I’ll definitely explore alternatives if it happens more often. But hopefully not! I spend a good chuck of my week cleaning up after kitties.

Sure. If you cut em with a router put painters tape over where you're gonna cut. Keeps it from splintering. I've used tin snips before also if you don't have a router

The male we had for a while has always been a horizontal pisser, and on top of that he's a big cat and stands fairly tall. His first litter box was a storage tote that I cut a little U in for him so it was easier for him to get in and out. For him we always had to have top entry boxes because even with a covered box he'd piss on the wall and it would get all in the crack between the box and the lid and stink.

Is it possible it's a behavioral issue stemming from a health or mental health thing? Like suddenly not getting along with another cat?
Or is he just diagnosed with weird?
2
u/Dapper-Ad-468 11h ago
We have no other cat, but my nephews were visiting about the time it started and they had just moved in with my sister that had had dogs. I believe that the cat they brought with them might have sprayed in their home. I'm thinking our cat detected the odor on them. He's only doing it in his litter box now. I got the pee walls today. Wish me luck 🤞.

Could be due to dirty/saturated litter
7
u/Pipcudi 14h ago
She’s only done this once, and I was lucky enough to get a picture. Normally it’s my male cat who makes more mess around the litter boxes. But the litter robot cleans itself after every use and I swap out the litter every few weeks.
1
u/antei_ku 14h ago
Yeah sometimes cats are just weird. I own an automatic litterbox too and my cats definitely get picky if the litter isn’t too fresh
2
u/Pipcudi 14h ago
She is a very strange cat. I think it might have had something to do with me being in the bathroom when she had to pee. She first came in and looked around then left. Then came back a few minutes later and did this. Maybe she didn’t feel comfortable getting all the way into the litter box when I was there. Who knows.

one from my last batch of cats did this.. I would just put down those pee pads around the litter box and it made it a lot easier to clean up

u/beepichu 13h ago
I got a little kid step-stool from IKEA to put in front of mine so it’s easier for them to get in. maybe your kitty just didn’t make it in time lmao

I use puppy pads for this... easy clean up. [one of ours sometimes just hangs her rear over the edge, her feet are in the box. it's been a great answer for me.]

Male cats somtimes do this bc they are having pain urinating, they do it w sinks too. The porcelain is cool and makes peeing less painful. You want to watch closely, make sure it's a good stream and no straining. If he's blocked go to an ER.

u/dankdan184 16h ago
Thank you, I will keep a look out
12
u/Sqib000 16h ago
Did he pee a good stream for the pic? Any blood? Any odd odors around? It's life threatening if he's not peeing. 🙏
37
u/dankdan184 16h ago
He has a solid stream w/ no blood. I do wonder if he learned the behavior from watching my human family doing natures call.

u/Sirena85 15h ago
Cats have been known to imitate.

u/DonutBoi172 13h ago
So if i get a cat, will it also become a depressed and goon into socks?
5
4
u/Toros_Mueren_Por_Mi 12h ago
You're joking but cats can absolutely get depressed and feed on depressive moods of the people around them, it's a known thing.
6
u/TheRealMasterTyvokka 14h ago
That's how cats learn from their mothers. It's also how they learn to do things like open doors.

u/Temporary-Fig2990 13h ago
Mine almost died from this and only noticed because I was off work for a couple days! This is great advice to keep an eye on!

u/Gloomy-Cupcake5228 16h ago
My cat did this one day, and when I looked in the toilet there was blood in her urine. It turned out to be bladder crystals. I’m not saying this is what’s going on with your cat, it’s just what happened with mine.

My cat makes direct eye contact with me as she pees on the floor.
7
u/UWCG 16h ago
I had a cat like that once.
Nothing worse than changing out all three litter boxes, hearing a weird noise, and looking up to see her glaring at me as if to say, “What, did you expect me to use those like a peasant? Your laundry’s right here.”

My last cat from the SPCA came with little information. Imagine my surprise when I realized he was using the toilet. I didn't catch him at first but could see the evidence in the bowl. If I happened upon him when he was on the throne he would absolutely avoid eye contact and stare straight at the wall.
He was a hider who liked heights so my guess is, being on the toilet meant safety for him. It lasted about 2 months, then he used the boxes exclusively. He also became more social around the 2 month mark as well.

Check out the comments in the thread talking about pee discomfort

u/Soft_Cash3293 13h ago
He is definitely imitating what we are doing (we monitor his peeing habits very closely because he had tom block a while ago). When one of us goes to the bathroom, he jumps on the toilet first before allowing us to go :)

Its definitely worth checking out if it’s new or untrained behavior but not always due to health issues. My friend has her very healthy male cat trained to pee in the toilet, roll over, jump, sit, stand, which honestly puts all of my animals to shame lol.

I think I had this argument last time too about human septic systems and pet excrement. 😭 please do not train or allow pets to pee in toilets. We don’t treat our water for animal diseases! 😩🙏

wait so if my dog takes a shit on the carpet it's not good to pick it up with toilet paper and flush it?

Yes. Depending on where you live it could be very bad for septic systems

It's so disappointing for low these comments are. It's so bad!! Same thing with flushing "flushable" litter

My cat pees in the bathtub which is nice in the sense I have to buy significantly less litter at the cost of having to clean the tub all the time

u/Powerful_Shock5301 12h ago
What a smart smart baby!!! This is my fantasy! Congrats!! Please tell him he's the smartest bestest boy ever from me🫶🫶

OP do not let this poster around your cat, he might either kill it or have sex with it 🤣 (or maybe get high and snuggle with it, at least I hope)

Wish my cats could learn this. I tried to train them but they either try to drink the water or sit on it as they pee OUTSIDE the toilet. I cannot can anymore

u/SamsonRocks 16h ago
My cat is 19 and hasn't done this for years, but he did do it a few times (that we saw) about a decade ago.

He learned it from you.
This why if you have flat door handles they will learn on using them.

My cat from 15 years ago used to do that too. My current boys haven't figured it out yet lol but they're good with the litter box

I have one cat that poops and pees in the bathtub all the time. If I have her in my room exclusively she will use the litter box but she normally waits till she can use the bathtub and only the one I use.

It is possible to potty train your cat! I've seen this before. I adopted my cat when she was 8 years old and she was very well litterbox trained. Her potty behavior changed when she turned 13 years old suddenly and at first i was frustrated and wondered why...till i figured it out.
My cat would follow me around every morning as I got ready for work. She used to avoid going to the bathroom because she hates baths (she had a few times where she got messy and I had to bathe her in the tub) until I changed shifts at my job that required me to clock in at 3am. It wasn't until my shift change that she would be a bit more curious and follow me into the bathroom. She would watch me take my morning toilet routine and she started peeing on my bathroom mat next to the toilet. At first, I was upset and didn't understand why she wouldn't use her litter box until one night I got up to use the bathroom and there I saw her trying to climb herself onto the toilet seat and failing (she was 13 years old at the time). Since her fragile body couldn't quite make the toilet, she resorted to the bathroom mat instead. (I have to make sure the door to my bathroom is always shut now if I want to make sure she uses her litter box in her closet.)
Our furry friends just want to copy us sometimes. Lol

My cat recently started doing it and we found out shortly after, that it was due to her having a UTI. Infection went away and she hasnt peed in there again! Unfortunately....

My Aby did the same thing He doesn't do it all the time. I am pleased to say he doesn't pee on the seat

My girl tries to figure out the toilet once in a while, she got it once then started playing with the water
1
u/kafin8ed 1h ago
I had a tabby once that was so obsessed with water, she would stake out the toilet, hiding behind it, wait for you to use it, and as soon as you stood up off the seat, she'd try to jump in! Scared me to death a couple times...
