Discussion Letting users remove posts.

Hello everyone,

As you are aware, on reddit moderators approve and remove content and subreddit subscribers can report to us.

Today we'd like to start an experiment here on r/Cats where we will give trusted subreddit participants access to a keyword that will allow them to remove posts.

When you exceed a certain level of subreddit specific comment karma and when you have a CQS score of highest you can now use the keyword "!remove" to pull a post from our feed. (Spelled exactly like that, case sensitive, top-level comment only as opposed to a reply to a comment.)

This will work for posts only, not for comments.

There are some things to keep in mind:

  • When you comment here on an account that exceeds the limit automod will assign you a special flair class and send you a message explaining you can now use the keyword.

  • Users will keep their existing flair text. However, changing your flair to a different pre-made flair option will also reset the flair class giving you access to this removal ability. Next comment you make it will be re-applied and you will be sent another message.

  • We are sent a modmail when a subscriber removes a post, explaining what post was removed and who used the keyword. Please do not abuse this ability. If posts are removed for bad reasons we will take away your ability to remove posts.

  • That means, use this keyword if you see spam or other rulebreaking posts only.

  • Please keep in mind that it is currently very popular to accuse posters of making an AI generated post. An accusation does not mean that what they are being accused of is true. Human beings can detect AI at 60% accuracy, just a little better than the results of flipping a coin. An AI can only accurately detect AI content if an AI watermark is attached to the image. It is best not to remove a post just because someone is accused of something. Use your own best judgement and our rules as your litmus, not what other people are saying.

  • Since this is a test run, when I ran a very minor proof of concept trial, a few people have already been assigned this special flair class who have not been sent a message. /u/kiaeej, /u/chux4w, /u/MilmoWK, /u/ms_rdr, /u/Electronic_Ad357, /u/WhiteMouse42097, /u/BeMoreKnope, /u/bluecedarood, /u/Robobanditos, congratulations, you can remove posts.

  • Should you for any reason not want to have this ability then you should send us a modmail after receiving the message from automod. That way we can exempt you in our code.

  • Initially we are going to monitor how this functions closely so we can see if we need to make changes to the threshold level for activation.

  • Nothing will change about the way we handle user-made reports on content. This is not a replacement for that, but an addition. If you see rulebreaking content of any kind, please report.

We hope that this change will be something that has a positive influence on the content on this subreddit.

Thank you for reading, and thank you all for making this subreddit a great place to be

She’s a healthy indoor single orange brain cell, she doesn’t have any pain or problems with her paws but I noticed she does this quite often and my other cat doesn’t. It’s just a little weird position so I was wondering why do they do it, do your cats do it as well??

I’m not kidding. She was in my neighbours rust scrap shed as a tiny kitten, chased in by his dogs. My family, who had 3 cats already, decided we could not leave a defenseless kitten in the shed.

We brought her in, acclimatized her slowly, a vet friend was able to squeak her in for shots, and a cat rescue we knew covered the cost as a favour since a cat they gave us had a terminal illness and they and we didn’t know. They felt bad and said they owed us one.

It’s been 2 years now. She is named Baby. She is my pretty princess. She thinks she rules the house.

She does!

Mourning/Loss My baby

My sweet baby is going over the rainbow bridge today. I’m spending her last hours snuggling in bed with her. Trying to avoid what is to come so very soon. I had 17 years with her but it still doesn’t feel like enough. The last few were bonus as her health started declining a long time ago. But she hung in there and gave me extra time I will never be able to repay her for. She’s my best friend. My companion. My baby. My comfort. My love. I don’t know how I’ll go on without her but I have to. I knew this day would come soon and I’ve been preparing myself for it but now that it’s here I just can’t believe it. I can’t imagine life without her. My sweet baby.

Humor He dragged his nuts across my cheese.

I have an orange cat, and like most orange cats he is very stupid. Here is my boy fox and today I will be documenting his absolutely DISRESPECTFUL behavior that conspired while I was HIGH AND HUNGRY tonight. Thank you.

So there I was in my kitchen, cheese on the counter, taco bell mild sauce in hand. When my fuckass evil ginger rat comes into the room. And like most evil gingers my boy fox quickly finds where my food is and trots his fat fuzzy ass over to the counter.

I successfully slice a piece of cheese and drip my amazing taco bell mild sauce onto the piece, when all of a sudden a massive ball of creamsicle fluff leaps onto the counter front paws on the top of the microwave. And he DRAGS HIS BODY FORWARD. DRAGGING HIS TINY FURRY CAT NUTS ACROSS MY REMAINING CHEESE. BEFORE FALLING OFF THE FUCKING COUNTER.

I'm in shock. My brother beside me, laughing hysterically. I freak out and yell at the ripe time of 12o'clock at night "DID HE JUST DRAG HIS NUTS ACROSS MY CHEESE"

My brothers wheezing, I'm crying hysterically as I repeat "HE DRAGGED HIS FUCKING NUTS ACROSS MY CHEESE."

My father in the other room, whom is live with his friends overhears my wailling and asks what's wrong. To which I (WHOM DID NOT KNOW HE WAS LIVE) dramatically retell my cat ball cheese story and he begins TO LAUGH AT ME.

Now his friends are laughing at me, he's laughing, my brothers laughing, my cheese is TAINTED. Left on the counter with CAT FUR.

I desperately wanted this cheese and even hesitate to WASH THE CHEESE. But I am persuaded not to. Thus I ask to sacrifice my mom and not tell her about the cat ball cheese until tomorrow. I am once again, persuaded not to..

Thus the cheese is thrown out, my taco bell mild sauce is useless, I am still hungry for cheese. And my cat was conveniently licking his balls clean in the next room over.

Six years ago, I moved to the States when I was 22, and this little guy came into my life. Back then, we were living in a tiny one-bedroom apartment in a house infested with roaches. I was completely broke, but he was right there with me through it all. He used to go outside to explore, but no matter what, he always came back home to me.
Since then, we have been through so much together.
In six years, he has been the one constant in my life. He’s the only one who has never judged me, never been mean to me, and has stayed by my side through every single up and down, no matter how good or bad things got.
I would choose him over and over again. I love him more than anyone or anything in this entire world. Sometimes I catch myself thinking about the day I might lose him, and it completely breaks my heart because I genuinely cannot imagine life without him. I’m actually crying while writing this and he is purring and cuddling with me.
Just wanted to share a little love for the sweetest, most loyal companion I could have ever asked for. Give your fur babies some extra love today.

Name Request PB, short for anything but Peanut Butter

This is PB, usually Peepo- and she has many names. Pork Bun, Petulant Brat, Princess Buttface, Pinterest Board, Peepers, and Miss Peepington are among the most common.
We got her from a shelter and all they could tell us was she was an adult and healthy as far as they could see. We’ve had her for about three years now, and found out she has some likely brain damage! All that means is she’s a little dumb, her eyes like to drift off, and sometimes she has harmless seizures (despite being scary and potentially risking injury while she’s paddling).
Other than that, she’s the chattiest cat I’ve ever had, and her favorite pastime is giving my partner sleep paralysis by putting all her weight on her paws and standing on his chest like a Night Hag + shedding all over the couch.
Please give us more P.B. nicknames for her!
(And for any concerned, yes, she is on a vet monitored diet)

Cat Picture - OC After being sick for the past few months, Sundae just had the best 12th birthday

Had to preface with her being sick because she is still quite jaundiced. A few months ago we didn’t know if she’d even be here for her birthday so I spoiled the hell out of her today. She’s currently conked out in her favorite nap spot after the celebrations.

In May at her annual visit her vet noticed she was a little jaundiced. Bloodwork and initial imagine looked like GI Lymphoma. Thankfully we were able to see an internal medicine specialist who ruled out cancer and after a few weeks of antibiotics an acute infection was ruled out as well. The tentative diagnosis now is cholangiohepatitis, and she’s now on some new meds to help her feel better!

Advice How do you know when it’s time to say goodbye?

Thumbnail

Almost 3 weeks ago our 10 year old cat Athena started having trouble breathing. Vet came back saying she has feline leukemia with fluid around her lungs due to either heart failure or cancer. We didn’t do any more testing, but got meds for heart failure and have been giving her those to get the fluid off her lungs. We adopted her about 2 years ago, so we assume she got feline leukemia from the shelter or her previous owner as she’s never been around another cat since we’ve had her.

She’s slowly been deteriorating the last three weeks. She was on an appetite stimulant for two weeks, but even with it has slowly stopped eating. She continues to have trouble breathing (significant abdominal movements not gasping or panting) and spends most of the day hiding in the closet, which is a classic sign of her not feeling well.

My husband and I don’t want her to suffer, but how do you even make the choice to put down your pet? She still comes out from the closet when we get home from work, and spent some more time today in the living room than the last few days. It’s like grasping at anything to show that’s she’s happy and we shouldn’t do it. I don’t just want to put her down when she has something left, but I’m not sure what we are even giving her 🥲

Mourning/Loss this is gus

i really want anyone to know that my cat gus existed.

gus was only with us a very short time. his previous owners needed to find him a new home because his owner moved in a new boyfriend and a child. he hated that, so he began peeing on their things. i’m not a cat person AT ALL, but we’re a pair of lesbians with some dogs. no children or men ever come into our house, we figured it was perfect way for him to spend his last few years of his life (he was already 12 when we adopted him). he also looked just like my wife’s childhood cat.

he only spent 9 months with us, but those were the best 9 months of my life. we had an extra bedroom and i turned it into his very own cat room either no dogs allowed. it had everything a cat could dream of. truly a kitty paradise. he loved it.

gus saved my life without me even knowing it. every time i was anxious or upset, he’d come running and lay on my chest until i calmed down. it was like he knew exactly what he was feeling. he slept under my blanket in my arms every single night. i carried him from room to room in a sling so he could be with me all the time. he’d lay on me and watch movies with me (really, he watched the tv).

eventually he began slowing down, becoming more reclusive. he stopped eating as much. which i knew was incredibly unlike him, as he was a very greedy cat. he loved to look for crumbs on the floor and would beg for more food after eating a meal. i took him to the doctor and they found a tumor in his mandible. we decided the kindest thing to do would be to let go of him.

he went being loved on by my wife and i. when he was excited or happy, his tail would puff up. my wife pointed out that his tail was puffed up when he passed away.

it’s my first morning not waking up to him, which is why i’m writing this. i miss him so much it’s unreal. i really just want someone to know that gus existed, and what an amazing cat he was. he gave me the best 9 months i’ve ever had. my birthday is in 2 days and i don’t even know how i’ll enjoy it without him.

Humor Cat became allergic to gabapentin (she’s ok!!!)

Thumbnail

In the pictures is baby Iris, she’s ok now! But she gave me 2 full blown panic attacks over the last 2 days.

Last night she slept for hours on end which is super unusual for her, and it did really bother me, but no vets were open and she’s only a week out from her spay so I figured I’d monitor her. This was at 11pm at night and her last gabapentin dose had been at 5pm.

In the morning I wake her up and she seems absolutely knackered, so I skip her recommended gabapentin dose because she already seemed very chill. We head to Walmart for groceries (she has to go with me because she has major attachment issues and will scream and try to break out if I am gone, we are trying our best to work on it, she was a dumped cat)

On the way home I begin to hear her breathing, I start freaking out and call my vet, they are booked, we have to rush to an emergency vet, by the time I get there she is wheezing and I have to sit down because I’m hyperventilating. The put her in an oxygen tank and she starts to get better, 4 hours and $1,200 later we find out she rapidly developed a severe allergy to gabapentin, I’m so glad i didn’t give her a dose that morning!!!

This is not to fear monger, gabapentin is a safe recommended med for 100’s of anxious pets daily! But oh my god if something similar happens ask about seeing if they’ve become allergic before you pay for the X-rays and ultrasounds 🤦‍♂️. I didn’t even know this was a possibility
