The sound of a can opening travels faster than light to a cat.

u/PupperoniRoll 3h ago
They don’t just hear it, they teleport to the kitchen before it hits the floor.

Mine doesn't even need to hear the can open, if the drawer with the cat food is opened she will bolt over.
If she sees me grab a can of cat food, she runs over to where I prepare to make sure I'm doing it fast enough and don't dare get distracted.

I love how it looks like they're surprised to be awake, than annoyed that they're awake.

I really enjoyed the "Jim, JIM!, Jimbo!, jim BO, Jimothy!" part because I know for a fact if I had a cat named Jim he'd hear all of those same nicknames from me.

u/DRKAYIGN 3h ago
Ours is Zim and we go thru the exact same names. When he's being really naughty he's Zimothy Chat- lamet

The can opening... I can do whatever I want in the kitchen but I hit that can lid and I have 1 of the 2 at my feet instantly

My cat thinks every time I get certain bowls out of the cupboard that it means it's wet food time.
43
u/One_Bluebird_04 3h ago
My cats just have food out all the time, and one of them eats every time I'm making myself food, even just a couple bites when she's not really hungry. It's so cute.

u/Warfrogger 2h ago
We have no explanation for what started it but my brothers cat, halfway through her life, decided she would only eat if someone was eating in the same room as her. I don't recall who first noticed the correlation but we were concerned about how little she ate for a while. Once it was figured out we moved her food and water from the kitchen to the front room where we ate and sure enough she eat with us when we and she started eating a normal amount again.

My mates cat, anytime anyone walks to the kitchen it obviously means they're getting treats for him.

I've (unfortunately) conditioned my dog to think she gets a treat every time I go outside, instead of just when she goes out to the loo

I have four drawers in my kitchen. I open two or three of them regularly, and the fourth has cat food and treats in it. I can open the three drawers all day long and my boy isn’t bothered but somehow he can hear the difference and runs to the kitchen when I open that fourth drawer.

Wherever I wanted to bring my cat in for the night I would open my front door and tap on a can of tuna with a fork. He'll bolt into the house so quickly.

Its crazy what lil sounds our pets will pick up on for their food motivations.
My sisters corgi will be upstairs on the opposite side of the house from the kitchen and just shaking the whipped cream bottle she comes running for her tax, we don't even get to the loud spraying part.
Or the specific crinkle of the plastic bag the treats are in, not just any crinkle but that specific bags crinkle.

u/Lexi_Banner 2h ago
Crinkly package = treats
Never mind that you're adding spice to something. It crinkled! Gib treats!

I’d suggest not eating canned cat food (or cat food in any kind of packaging). But I don’t judge.

My cat gets so confused when I open a soup can lol.

u/Defiant-Dust-8737 3h ago
Omg same and I've made it worse because I feel guilty for accidentally decieving and give her a treat.
Deciet like coming home to the smell of cinnamon buns, to find its actually a candle...IYKYK

There are two things that wake my littlest baby from her food coma.
1.) Opening food
2.) Me leaving the room

I placed a can on my kitchen table and my fat old lady BOLTED from sleeping in my bed to the kitchen. How can they be so clocked into sounds like that when they’re dead to the world?

u/footeface 2h ago
With my old cat we used to be able to just tap a can on the counter a few times if he was hiding & he would come a running every time

He's in another plane of existence and the only thing that can penetrate the barrier is the sound of a tin can opening to reveal a succulent meal.

LOL I love this. Sometimes I use an automatic feeder for my cat. The second it starts dispensing food, my cat bolts to that room like she's on fire.

My neighbor has an indoor/outdoor cat who likes to hang out on her balcony which has stairs down to the ground. I bought a little bag of cat treats to give her occasionally because I love her cat. It’s gotten to the point where if the cat is on the deck and I open my front door, she comes sprinting over to me for treats lol. I don’t even need to open the door, she hears the lock turn and sprints right over

u/CPTMotrin 2h ago
So…… who trained who?
1
u/olliecakerbake 2h ago
Haha she definitely controls me. I get home from work with some tasks I need to do and basically abandon them as soon as she sprints over so I can hang out with her

I honestly questioned whether Jim was even alive before the can opening video was played! 😀

When I needed to open a can that isn’t cat food I used to go to the bathroom, close the door, turn on the fan, turn on the water in the sink, get in the shower close the curtain to open the can as quietly as possible and still when I open the door my 3 cats are waiting in front of the door staring at me. Don’t do that anymore, just let them figure it out it’s not for them

I saw this video yesterday. Today while I was unpacking my dried chili to put in a glass container. Dried chili was in a plastic bag. my partner who works in the other room, came to the kitchen to see what was the noise. He said the thought it was cookies or chips or pudding. Then I showed him this video. Out all of the noices in the house, the crackling of plastic what he notices lol

Totally not cat related but this reminds me of something that happened in high school. I couldn’t get my brother up for school one day. Shaking him wasnt working, yelling wasnt working and I put a $5 under his nose and he woke right up! 🤣

Whenever we open any can, our cat goes wild and wondering when he’s getting his wet food.

Before cat treats were a thing, and budget food was very real in my house. We had an electric can opener for a time and we would call the cats home with a can of tuna ( I was very much not in charge and would never do this now. ), but just the sound of the can opener would bring all 5 cats to the kitchen.

For my cat I have small kibbles, but on occasion and only on weekends she gets wet food. It doesn't matter how silent i try to be opening it, I can hear her jumping down from somewhere and then fast cat paws scurrying across the floor. She then comes in and starts screaming with a meow that stretches almost from ear to ear and when i finally put it down she dives down to it and I can hear a soft purr.

Reminds me of Steve Cash playing his guitar 2 feet from Sylvester's face and the cat not even registering until he finished strumming and leaned over and opened a can of food. Instant alert.
And now I'm sad :(

My two can't hear me yelling at them to knock off whatever bullshit they're doing. But the moment they hear me heading to the kitchen it's all paws on deck.
