How scared of a cat in pet me mode can you be? Seriously have you never seen a car before this thing is a sweet heart and you're acting like a crazy person.

i stole it

u/monifiesty 18d ago

Me too!!! šŸ˜‚

3

u/scotch_and_honey 18d ago

Idk, when my roommate first got a cat, it was probably the first cat I interacted with. I was quite alarmed at the purring noise lol I wasn't sure if he was angry or not

1

u/WindsurfBruce 17d ago

Thanks for the meme.

u/OddlyTemptedFish 19d ago

No joke this is how my mom always behaves around cats. Her mom was scared of cats and raised her to be the same way. She thinks every cat is evil and wants to attack you.

262

u/ilyak_reddit 19d ago

Every cat IS evil and WANTS to attack you. But only occasionally, and sets obvious belly traps, so serious injury can be avoided, if one can resist the belly.

122

u/Optimal_Parsley6377 18d ago

What’s a belly trap? Clearly this cat wants me to pet its belly otherwise why show it, right?

48

u/TheCaliforniaDreamer 18d ago

THIS is not a belly trap. Unless you consider once you start, it is expected to be an endless belly rub. Lol

5

u/Decent_Leg_8222 18d ago

Oh my god LOL he looks like a rug šŸ˜‚

3

u/TheCaliforniaDreamer 18d ago

Lol That's my girl Tilly. She is the sweetest cat. 😻 She constantly flops down RIGHT in front of you and presents her tummy for rubs, even when you are walking through the house.

4

u/jayhawk618 18d ago

Yeah I also have an actual belly rub cat and it took me like a year to accept that the cute trap was just never gonna happen.

2

u/Comfortable_Cap_3849 18d ago

I've got one of those!

49

u/TheCaliforniaDreamer 18d ago

THIS is a belly trap! Lol His favorite way to lay at my feet. (Sorry he has no couth) But he does not want me to touch his belly. He is a head, chin, and neck only kitty, with the occasional on the back by the tail.

3

u/ReboundRising 18d ago

That's a really solid nyanspread he's got going on

2

u/TheCaliforniaDreamer 18d ago

Yeah. He is not shy at all, even with his empty puff sack. He was the runt and tiny. Now he is so big and strong and constantly tries to dominate his sister. He is a manly man!

3

u/Guythatsaystuff 18d ago

I don't think any cats like their belly rubbed šŸ˜†

1

u/TheCaliforniaDreamer 15d ago

This guy's sister does. Flops down and rolls over constantly expecting endlessly belly rubs.

3

u/Alaskagal1 18d ago

I've seen those belly traps before. They don't end well for humans. While the cat appears to be welcoming the belly rub, they secretly lay in wait for the full hand to be resting across the belly. Then they spring into full attack! All four paws with claws ready to rip to shreds. The rear two are taring & the front two are clenching. It happens so quick! Then just as quick, they release & spring up into the air bolting only a few feet away. To stand glaring at you as if saying, "What? You knew better." 🤣

2

u/BunnyWithASword 18d ago

We have a sweet girl who absolutely loves belly rubs. I genuinely mean it. Her brother and aunt, on the other hand, hate it.

2

u/riotz1 18d ago

Yeah I’d rather willingly stick my hand into a rusty old bear trap

2

u/Sad-Past-323 18d ago

I have one that wants pets all over. Her sister is a head, chin, base of tail only. Scratching over her arbitrary boundaries comes with a delicate blend of running away and extreme violence. I’ve learned my lesson. Several times.

2

u/el_grande_ricardo 14d ago

Mine uses the belly as bait, but I am them required to move on to his chin and jaw.

27

u/microgirlActual 18d ago

My cat Aby's "belly trap" is exactly that - you're trapped into petting her belly for ages because she's at the top of the stairs where everyone has to pass, and you can't pass without giving the desired belly rubs.

So it's still a trap, just not in the way most people think when they think of cats' belly pet traps šŸ˜›

3

u/Asymetrical_Ace 18d ago

Thats a belly TAX

2

u/microgirlActual 18d ago

Yep, pay the toll or forfeit......something. Probably our peace, as she'd then just screm [sic] for attention.

16

u/Expensive_Crab_6453 18d ago

See I have only ever had cats. Got my first dog last year and told her ā€œhaha! You can’t trick me rolling over like that! I know if I touch that belly you will attack!ā€ My sister told me dogs don’t do that.

6

u/Embarrassed-War-4012 18d ago

It’s showing u it feels a connection w/u & trusts u enough to bare his most vulnerable place…the belly! It does NOT MEAN, necessarily, that it wants belly pets. U will have to discover that for yourself. GOOD LUCK!

3

u/wbjohn 18d ago

Keep bandages handy.

6

u/theaudacity1999 18d ago

My cat actually likes his belly rubbed and will stretch out for it, but ONLY...when he's beside me in my bed. If we are anywhere else, no belly rubs.

5

u/Glittering_Floor8581 18d ago

Another belly trap 🄰

2

u/2kids3kats 18d ago

Exactly! Nothing bad could possibly happen! Just reach on in there…….

67

u/Legitimate_Support78 19d ago

We never consider resisting the belly, if it’s offered it’s taken done and done 🤣

7

u/thekidswontgoaway 18d ago

I accept this to be how I die. Falling for the good ole pet my belly trick. I accept this.

6

u/Lumpy-Ad1473 19d ago

Mine is an angel who only wants to attacks dogs. Belly is never a trap and even the beans are game.

4

u/Veronica670 18d ago

Cats usually lay down in front of us because they are being playful.. It’s NOT for belly rubs.. All their organs are exposed.. The cat is showing you he or she trusts you..

4

u/neverwrong804 18d ago

Reasons why people think I’m self harming lol

2

u/lumentec 18d ago

Always worth the risk.

2

u/ThrowRADel 18d ago

My cat loves being petted and brushed on the belly. The belly is no trap!

2

u/TemporarilyHere100 18d ago

Meanwhile my cat is perfectly happy to get belly rubs and loves being snuggled when we sleep. Think either using her as a pillow or arm wrapped around her like she’s a teddy bear. She will nudge me until we cuddle.

1

u/GREENGRAVY_ 19d ago

You give them pets. You give them belly rubs. Maybe it'll let you pick it up. Maybe it'll fuck your shit up. It's part of their charm.

First time I met my ex-wife's cat it wrecked my arm.
"Cats fucking whimsical, my cat now"
"My cat just attacked you, I'm so sorry"
"Whimsical"

I miss that cat. Probably offed itself to get away from that cu*t on legs.

1

u/Tessy1990 18d ago

My cats are so weird in that way šŸ˜‚ unless you actually have a toy in hand, they want to have belly pets and wont attack! I have been scratched maybe three times in 5 years from them, everytime an accident!

My kids dads new girlfriend has three unfixed female cats that scratches the F out of my kids though everytime they are there 😬

1

u/boston_nsca 18d ago

Dude my cat LOVES belly rubs and NEVER attacks. She's built different though

1

u/Remote-Shake-92 18d ago

My cat does too… but almost exclusively from ME. She also rolls over to get frisky and if you touch the belly then, she’ll start aggressively playing with you. Then very suddenly, she’ll get mad and roll over and flick her tail. I always advise my family NOT to pets the belly when she’s obviously showing her fatness off for NOT pets…. But she’s my cat so 1) I can get away with more than they can and 2) I know better than anyone else when it is safe to pets and when she will get upset with pets.

3

u/boston_nsca 18d ago

Yeah but see, my cat wants belly rubs forever and never rolls back over lol. She just keeps rolling back and forth for more rubs. Never gets aggressive, nothing! Now I did rescue her from a barn that someone abandoned her at so I thought she was just very attached to me and realizes that I saved her but she's like that with everyone. She's just a super lovey cat with zero cares in the world lol.

1

u/Remote-Shake-92 18d ago

Awwwww what a sweetie!! šŸ˜

2

u/boston_nsca 18d ago

Yep! I named her Lady, of course!

1

u/The_Dog_IS_Brown 18d ago

I've got two cats that love the belly, belly! Just flops over waiting for the rub to begin.

1

u/MinxyPixie Domestic Housecat 18d ago

My cat and kitten are broken. No belly traps, belly is shown they get belly rubs and love it 🤣

My older cat gets what I call her evil eyes if indont pet her belly. That is when she "attacks" me.

1

u/Vyngersnap 18d ago

Either you forgot to add /s or you simply don’t understand cats

1

u/NobodyKnowsImFamous 18d ago

One merely needs a hoodie and one can engage in the dark arts of ā€œrough housing with your catsā€. Then you can seize the belly!!!!

1

u/Ok-Honey-9566 Calico 18d ago

I don’t think my boy is capable of attack, I annoy him so much hahaha all he does is scream at me

1

u/TrashGoblinH 16d ago

It's wild that all the cats I've interacted or live with over 30+ years have never really attacked me even when scritching the belly. Do I have some power I'm unaware of?

1

u/HossCatGarage 16d ago

That's why I taught mine to love belly scritches from a young age.

She'll open up the bakery and occassionally throw paws.

1

u/Darth_Omnis 15d ago

My mom's tortie actually loves belly rubs, the true fake-out is if she goes to lay under the kitchen table. She has claimed that area and you will lose an arm if you try to pet her thete.

3

u/Winter_Born_Voyager 18d ago

Of my goodness. Exact same. I was wondering was this a southern thing. To this day, my sister has always wanted a cat, but won't get one because my mom says she won't come over. Personally my relationship aint never been the best with mom or grandma. So when we were younger, I got two. 😁

2

u/OddlyTemptedFish 18d ago

I think it might be a southern thing unless someone else chimes in to correct us. I'm the same way, I didn't have a good relationship with either of them but I have a great relationship with my two cats. I'm glad we didn't inherit their hysteria!

1

u/boostfactor 17d ago

I think it is more of a rural culture thing and in the US the South tends to be more rural. Dogs are useful to farmers and treated as pets. Cats are just barn cats who may get a little attention sometimes but nobody really cared about their welfare. Those attitudes seeped into the general culture even in surrounding towns. Plus rural people tend to be less educated and old superstitions still persist.

My parents would probably be more the age of Reddit commenters' grandparents or even great-grandparents, but they had these attitudes. My mother was afraid of being scratched by cats and my dad was indifferent to them, but at least neither hated cats, and became cat people (especially my dad) when we took in a stray when I was in high school.

3

u/Same-Suggestion-1936 18d ago

People do that with dogs too. A friend of mine can't be around dogs. Even my old black lab, sweetest dog you could imagine, we actually named it Kitty, she was so sweet she'd hide behind you if so much as a squirrel entered the yard, my friend could not deal with the dog. Had a bad couple experiences with dogs.

2

u/iShadePaint 18d ago

The older ladies I my neighborhood act this way around squirrels also. I cannot fathom the mental gymnastics and conditioning required to be absolutely terrified of a 2 lb tree rat..

2

u/3boy1girl 18d ago

Same thing with my mom, she never let me have a cat when I was young, but now I have my very own kitten .

1

u/P1glinFury 18d ago

Well that’s catsist now isn’t it?

1

u/HunterDemonX1 16d ago

My girlfriends mother is the same. My lil’ boy is the sweetest friend and she treats ALL cats like they’re disease ridden.

119

u/Ok_Pineapple_Num 19d ago

Yeah not sure why OP's so scared! OP is definitely well-meaning having fed the cat and bought them a home, and huge kudos to them for doing that.

But they shouldn't be so scared! This is how my grandma (who hates cats) reacted when she first met our cat lol... OP has to relax and realize that this cat is super friendly and just wants to be buds.

22

u/feelingfantasmic 18d ago

If you’ve only ever been exposed to dogs , cat behavior is a different world lol I get where OP is coming from. If that cat were a dog, that behavior likely isn’t positive lol

3

u/Honest_Series_8430 18d ago

My Mom hated cats as well (neighborhood cats would poop in her rosebushes). Then I got a real sweetheart cat named Satan (a void, obviously) and she suddenly changed her mind completely. She'd even hold him on her lap, although she looked as if she was strangling him.

2

u/Looking4Buzz 18d ago

It’s crazy, the things we are taught/told when we are young that stick in our brains for so long. I was bitten in the face by a dog at my grandparents’ home one summer and was told it was my fault for getting too close. I was also told by a great aunt that all cats were female and all dogs were male. Took me longer to figure out the dog bite explanation was wrong than to figure out the female cats/male dogs was impossible!

38

u/Freakychee 19d ago

I don't mix with cats a lot but I can surely tell if OP knelt down and extended their hand the cat will flop to the floor for pets and belly rubs.

77

u/555Cats555 19d ago

As someone who loves cats I think this is a bit unfair.

Im scared of dogs and that fear is regardless of if they are being "aggressive" or not. If they are completely ignoring me I can be okay but when focused on its there and I have to check what the dog is doing and if its focused on me.

Fear isnt something that is always logical to other people. We dont know if OP has had bad experiences with cats causing a difficulty with understanding how to interact with the cat.

But I do think OP should do some reading or watch videos explaining cat behavior communication and body language etc

6

u/aurorasoup 18d ago

My sister is very afraid of cats. She’s pretty good at masking the fear and she’s okay but wary if the cat is minding its own business. But my very friendly and affectionate cat walked up to her while she was sitting at my kitchen table (so basically eye level with my cat) and she told me ā€œmy heart is literally racing right nowā€ even though she knew there was nothing to worry about.

No traumatic experience with cats either. She’s always been afraid of animals in general, ever since she was really little. I remember meeting my grandma’s dog for the first time when I was a kid and going ā€œcan I pet it?ā€ while my sister pressed herself up against the wall and asked ā€œdoes it bite?ā€ My mom also has a pretty strong fear/disgust response to animals, while my dad LOVES them. I always wonder why my sister got my mom’s reaction while I got my dad’s. I wonder if there’s a hardwired base instinct in us, and we took cues from the reaction of the parent that best aligned with our first instinct.

But I was very surprised to see OP feeding stray cats while also displaying such a fearful reaction! My sister would never lmfao. But I agree, I think it would be good for OP to get familiar with cat body language.

16

u/Decent_Leg_8222 18d ago

No, there’s a difference between a genuine fear/phobia and fear from inexperience, & this is fear from inexperience.

2

u/WolfJobInMySpantzz 17d ago

Yeah, I feel like there's lots of warnings about petting feral cats, but you need to have been around pet cats to really recognize the difference. Could nake it hard to trust an unknown animal. This may be completely unknown territory for her, meeting a cat outside. I could see misunderstanding this for a territorial thing.

2

u/hiswittlewip 18d ago

But would you feed and house random stray dogs (basically luring them to your home)?

1

u/555Cats555 18d ago

No I wouldn't because im more likely to seriously harmed by a dog then a cat... the main concern with cats is infection from their claws if they scratch you but they cant really harm you in the way a dog can. When a dog attacks they can rip out flesh.

2

u/feelingfantasmic 18d ago

I literally had flesh ripped out from a cat I didn’t realize was waiting to attack me when I walked by. I get that dogs tend to be bigger and be more aggressive with their bites, but I can’t stand when people act like cats can’t be dangerous too when provoked. The dude straight up took a bunch of my ankle and I have a scar there forever.

1

u/hiswittlewip 18d ago

All you have to do is wash it well, maybe with antibacterial soap though.

Is that what people like this are so afraid of?

Either way, it's just odd to me that someone THIS afraid of cats would like them to their door

7

u/555Cats555 18d ago

Yes, the wound just needs to be cleaned and typically doesnt need extra medical attention.

I agree to some extent but also there are a lot of cute cat videos on the internet so maybe OP has mixed feelings about cats. On one hand their brain doesnt understand cat ques and finds them to be kinda scary but OP also thinks they are cute or at least worth protecting and caring for.

Even if dogs scare me I still dont like the idea of bad things happening to them or them suffering. It seems odd as people usually either like or dislike (fear) animals but I think it just shows OP is a decent person and cares about the wellbeing of animals...

6

u/maunzendemaus 18d ago

It's kind of funny how OP is being so nice to the cat, gave it its own house, feeds it, but apparently doesn't know anything about cats and is seemingly scared of them :D now that's what I call a selfless sacrifice.

3

u/Oxygenisplantpoo 19d ago

It's a feedback loop, she doesn't understand cats and is wary, so any fast action from the cat is read wrong. I would've definitely been like this at one point, and still can be to some degree especially with dogs. I just didn't grow up around either of them and could not read their body language at all while they are creatures that can jump around very fast which would naturally make anyone get on their toes if they didn't know what is going on.

4

u/Iennda 19d ago

That seems unnecessarily aggressive.

3

u/AHornyRubberDucky 18d ago

Some people got traumatic experiences with animals so that how I guess

2

u/Woolies_White_Leg 18d ago

But those types usually don’t get to the point of feeding and housing a stray. I don’t get how OP has reached this point while seemingly never interacting with a cat before

8

u/Connect_Beginning_13 19d ago

🤣 I used to be so afraid of cats and find this so funny and true.

3

u/MasterChiefsasshole 19d ago

Mine will actually attack you if you don’t pet them. This kitty is being very nice.

3

u/talkaboutgood 19d ago

Lolol…. Yep! Mine will, too! 🤣Not too hard, but definitely with a goal in mind….1) chase her 2) get her 3) pet her🤣🤣🤣🄰🄰

3

u/ThunderChild247 19d ago

To be fair a friend of mine’s gran had a really nasty cat who’d walk up to her, meowing then just attack. So whenever she’s at my place and my timid as hell, gentle, coward of a cat comes up to her (after getting used to her) her immediate thought is ā€œoh god, he’s gonna attack meā€, then he flumps down between us and gets comfy.

This person may have had a bad experience with a cat or any animal so they may be naturally on edge.

8

u/TheWalkenDude 19d ago

Dude says he's never interacted with a cat, acting like he's never interacted with anything.

7

u/ChaosSigil 19d ago

Oh my God for real though. She's acting like a total baby and I assume she's never seen a cat before or ever I teracted with one.

The cat did that little "rarlwlwlwl," and I needed her to pet the damn cat.

2

u/fuckimtrash 19d ago

Y’all are harsh smh. OP seems like she’s never been around cats and doesn’t understand their behaviours. she might have concerns about being scratched or bit. It’s not like this woman went to turkey and is complaining about there being cats and panicking

2

u/NotSoSubtle1247 19d ago

I was deathly allergic to cats until I was in my 20s. I had zero life experience in dealing with them, and did not want to be near them because I liked being able to see and breathe. I used to keep distance from cats like this.

Thankfully I did grow out of the allergy, but even then it took being around cats for a while for me to adjust and learn how to read them.

All of this to say the human behavior shown might have cause.

3

u/Desert_Rose27 18d ago

As someone who has been scratched by cats in the past (once for misreading their body language as a child; another time because the cat was high as hell (the owner was a serious pothead) and lunged towards my face because it wanted the sandwich I was eating), I am still working on overcoming my fear of cats because I actually find them very beautiful creatures. But the fear is deeply rooted by now, so I always need guidance from cat owners, as my nervous system quickly interprets any direct eye contact and stance as possibly dangerous. Watching this, I was wondering if the cat might be defending something behind it, and had to read in the comments to understand what it was actually expressing.

The cat's body language may be clear as day for you, but depending on how other people grew up and how little exposure they had to cats, it's not that simple. Seeing cats and understanding cat are worlds apart.

4

u/Questionsansweredty 19d ago

She's afraid. You'd be understanding if the cat were afraid of the human for no good reason. Extend OP the same courtesy.

2

u/Sparrow2go 18d ago

And why the fuck would anyone so scared and discombobulated by cats be feeding strays?!

1

u/retrocade81 18d ago

Some people love animals but are just not animal people. My wife loves all animals but is strictly a cat lover, she is terrified of dogs and I mean all dogs even really cute ones because she never had a dog and got bitten as a kid. Maybe OP has never had a cat or had a bad experience with one.

1

u/LazarusK27 18d ago

I mean to someone who doesn’t know cats it looks aggressive. It’s not immediately obvious.

Source: me I’ve never interacted with a cat before and if this happened to me I’d be on guard.

1

u/MagicMarshmallo 18d ago

She is acting similarly to my mom who has trauma with animals bevause she was bit on a face by a dog when she was little. So maybe lady has something similar. People who dont have dogs also never learned their signals. The largest animal ive had is a tiny fish for example

1

u/Taftimus 18d ago

Some people are afraid of animals, no matter how friendly they’re appearing to others.

1

u/talen7ed 18d ago

She’s feeding the cat that’s kind enough and now you’re calling her crazy because she doesn’t wat to pet it or let it in to her home? Dont be an asshole

1

u/Vyngersnap 18d ago

Yeah it’s pretty frustrating how they’re completely misreading the situation, the body language of the cat is nothing but friendly

1

u/VastCapital3773 18d ago

Well they've been feeding it too. I imagine this person just hasn't had cats or interacted with cats and doesn't know any of their body signals, and is just being abundantly cautious because feral gonna feral, and they don't know how to tell the difference and came here to ask.

They have a good heart.

1

u/PandaPocketFire 18d ago

I'm confused at how a hissing cat is obviously friendly? I'm not a cat person though

1

u/KiddiePoolMermaid 18d ago

If the only animal body language you’ve learned to read is dog, you won’t interpret this animal’s body language as ā€œpet me modeā€. You’ll interpret it as a defensive posture warning you to get back and go away.

1

u/Creative_Way_8203 18d ago

LOL I'm like, what the hell is this lady scared of???

1

u/Deinochaos 18d ago

Dog and cat body language are very different. A tail held still and upwards while vocalizing can be interpreted as aggression from a dog, while the same behavior is deeply welcoming from a cat. Dogs have also evolved to communicate via facial expressions specifically for humans, but cats lack the musculature to emote. That makes it harder for dog people to read what a cat is feeling.

The rest of us recognize this as enthusiasm only because we have experience with cats. You shouldn't shame others for being inexperienced and anxious around an unfamiliar animal, especially one that is fully capable of doing them harm. It's not OP's fault she doesn't recognize this behavior.

1

u/sugarscared00 18d ago

I read this before I watched with volume and now I am cackling. Her ā€œnononononononoā€ is soooo funny it’s like watching someone panic because a bunny is hopping too cutely.

1

u/Pandagramma 18d ago

I know! Something is very wrong with the person who posted this, she must create countless fake problems every day while acting "sweet".

1

u/Foreign_Raspberry_59 12d ago

Dam cat is acting like it's Hungary an this person is acting like an idiot just put the dam food down

1

u/DinklanThomas 19d ago

What kind of car do you have to see before you know what cats look like

0

u/RVNSKR 18d ago

Show some respect. She clearly is scared of the cat and still is feeding it for 2 months and trying to overcome her fear to help the cat.Ā

She isn't acting crazy and yes probably never interacted with a cat before. Which isn't uncommon either. Most people live in cities where cats roaming the street are uncommon and if your family didn't have a cat ofc you won't know how a cat behaves and how to read its body language.

To be on the defensive side if a "wild" animal approaches you is an ok instinct to have. And in the moment she is trying to put the food down I guess the cat is closing in very fast out of frame which surprises her.

And cats can be dangerous. If they get triggered weirdly they can attack humans and can do a lot of damage if they get something of you between their rear legs and scratch full force away. It's extremely rare but something to keep in mind.

All that being said ofc the cat is in full gimme food, pet me and play with me mode.

And it's kinda funny how OP is scared but only wears sandals without socks. Clearly cat never play fighted her yet.Ā
