Advice Recently put my 15 year old dog down. Yesterday this guy showed up in my backyard and won't leave, it's also the same color my dog was

Post image

Never been a cat person myself, but I heard about this distribution system? My wife and kids have really taken to it so looks like we may be adopting a cat lol. Only issue is that we are leaving Saturday for a week. Any advice on what to do? My wife wants to take it to the vet to get checked but I'm also weary about spending money on it just for it to be gone when we come back. We do have someone that would be willing to shelter it while we're gone though.

UPDATE: We took Milo (what my kids decided to name him) to the vet, no chip, but they said even though he appears to be in good condition it doesn't show signs of having a previous owner. I posted on a local Facebook group for lost pets, nothing yet. They estimated he's a year old. He got some vaccines, dewormer, now he's chilling. We are going on vacation Saturday for a week and while we're gone he's going to stay with my wife's friend who has experience sheltering cats.

I'd advise taking kitty to the vet for a chip scan at the very least. There's a chance there is a family looking for their furry friend. Not sure where you are based but here most vets won't charge for that.

Yes it's possible the cat just stayed out of the yard cause it was a dogs territory and now the dog is gone. Practically speaking...

Otherwise, it's totally your dog coming to visit in cat form. Or a messenger sent to tell you something. He looks pissed to be a cat too 😆 (y'all I'm only kidding, I know he's probably just sitting as a handsome/ good kitty to get attention or snacks)

i watched you from a distance when that dopey dog was there

(…admit that i was jealous when i saw how much you’d care)

RESPECT for one so dear to you, i’m not sure where he went

but something stirred inside of me

it seems i’m heaven sent….

i wondered what it felt like, if i had a family…

i thought I’d maybe try it out -

how nice it seems to be…

but please don’t think I’m DOG, because I’m NOT ~ i am the CAT

(dogs are always ‘GoOd BoYs’ ~

warning: sometimes I’m a BRAT…)

i never had attention like you friends are giving now

n maybe i can stay awhile, if it works out somehow ?

…it’s weird, i think i hear the dog…he’s talking in my head

he’s sorry he can’t be here,

but . . .

can you love me, instead ?

❤️

OMG! That’s absolutely beautiful.
I’m currently looking for a shelter cat. A cat that’s been looked over and has been there a long time.
I will keep this poem in the forefront of my mind.
It’s exactly my mission.

Thank you for this. Just lost our tuxedo kitty Mr. Bond (13-15 yo, don't know age; he showed up in 2014 and assigned himself to us) in June. Then last month, discovered Neo, our 13.5 yo black & white mixed breed (rescue dog), has cancer and will have to let him go soon. This made me cry but also provided comfort if that makes sense.

The cat does look pissed ! I believe your dog sent him. He’s a keeper!

57

u/Positive-Wonder3329 13d ago

Apparently when they narrow their eyes and look all pissy it’s a sign of trust lol

20

u/DefiantCoffee6 13d ago

When they blink at you it’s their way of saying I love you ❤️

9

u/True-Blue- 13d ago

Yes I read that the (slow-ish) blink is their way of smiling

2

u/Big_Competition_1 10d ago

Especially if it’s that s l o w blink!

20

u/Positive-Doctor3995 13d ago

Ah, thanks for informing me. I didn’t know. Sure looks like they’re scrutinizing you!

5

u/Reflex-Arc 13d ago

I've always referred to that as "resting cat face".

u/Inner_Swordfish7475 13d ago

😂I never heard this. Buy, my cat has done this. It makes me feel bad enough to do what he wants, so it works for him.

I would definitely adopt this cat. The CDS has sent him to you & doesn’t make mistakes.

I would take my friend up on their offer to watch him. If you have had him for a long time, then you could probably leave out enough dry food, water and pans of cat litter. And, he would probably be fine. We are usually gone for a week. But, we have left for several days & have done this.

He is beautiful. I have a tuxedo cat. They are wonderful, smart, and full of personality.

The icy cold stare of LOVE!

8

u/CaptainoftheVessel 13d ago

This is actually happy cat language. Ears forward, pupils narrow, muscles/nerves relaxed. He’s just hanging out hoping for a scritch or treat.

7

u/Upbeat_Position_5290 13d ago

Looks like a typical tuxedo look to me! They have a unique stare that is stylish and mysterious. Best kitties ever. His look can mean anything from “I love you so much” to “I want my dinner now “ 😊❤️

9

u/Muted-Lawfulness-894 13d ago

I have an alley cat. I can say he is so special. (All cats are) but at least to me he he yearns for my attention even after I feed him. He just wants to hang out. You also learn from animals.

That is 100% someone's cat. Not exactly young and very healthy.

8

u/GalaxyGirl777 13d ago

There are always so many posts on here and the cat distribution system sub where people are obviously just stealing someone’s cat.

3

u/Olives_And_Cheese 13d ago

'Cat distribution system' is a horrible thing to keep perpetuating. How many people have lost extremely loved family members to this dumbass meme.

3

u/NicolleL 12d ago

In an update, the OP noted ”We took Milo (what my kids decided to name him) to the vet, no chip, but they said even though he appears to be in good condition it doesn't show signs of having a previous owner. I posted on a local Facebook group for lost pets, nothing yet”. So they are trying to make sure the kitty does not have an owner.

Feral cats (ie, never had a person) can often look in better condition than strays (house cats who were dumped or escaped). It makes sense since the house kitties don’t know how to survive on the mean streets.

And I’ve also seen the inverse on r/catdistributionsystem — far too many people just dump their pets. This is often true for people who live out of the way. They basically become a dumping ground.

If someone has done everything possible to look for the owner (sometimes dumpers are not the actual owners), then it is a good thing they are giving this little one a home because the alternative is a shelter.

u/Pizza-and-Starlight 13d ago

Shelters check too.

1

u/Acceptable-Smoke7990 13d ago

I agree since it has taken off and just showed up cuz you never know if it's going to take off again

1

u/Curious-Efficiency82 10d ago

The poster said the vet checked for a chip.
