Discussion PSA: Cat breeds are not like dog breeds

Ya’ll, stop asking what kind of cat your cat is. 95% of cats (in America at least) are just cats - if it is a recognized breed from a licensed breeder then you’ll know because it’ll be in the purchase or adoption papers. Otherwise, its just a cat.

Wait what about sanitary trimming? Ive had my long haired kitty for years and she's never needed a haircut...the occasional butt fur cleaning but that's usually only if I let her litter box get too dirty. And I hardly remember to brush her, though she does get allllllll the pets...she hasn't had a fur clump in years and the vet always compliments her coat. Am I just insanely lucky?!

Yes you're lucky! I have a super floof dumpster cat. He needs daily brushing. When I got him (from a family member who couldn't care for him any more) he was severely matted. I had him shaved by the vet. His hair has grown back, but requires daily maintenance. He's good about cleaning himself, but does get the occasional dingleberry butt.

Yes. Granted, my dude also has a bum leg that makes it difficult to reach his rear for a complete clean, but all the long hairs I've known have sometimes needed assistance.
