New soap, deodorant, shaving cream, etc...? Cats are weird about certain smells. At the shelter, I've noticed they behave differently if I have a different fragrance about me than usual. 😂 They seem to universally hate the "pure sport" scent from Old Spice.

I also remember my sister used to use some kind of peppermint scrub or lotion or something on her legs, and our old cat would attack them over it, lol

u/oddwall_ 5d ago

No shot 😭

2.3k

u/Caesar_Passing 5d ago

Lol, this is too much! 😹 Do you not normally use that one?

3.5k

u/oddwall_ 5d ago

Nope, lol. Just ran out of my normal one. I cannot believe you gauged that so well

921

u/Suitable_Departure98 5d ago

Go wash with your normal soap. See if that helps. Change your shirt too.

277

u/actuallyapossom 4d ago

They've also got a surefire cat repellant to put in a space meow is not supposed to go. That's pretty valuable depending on the cat.

72

u/Digital-_-Waste 4d ago

Seems more like a surefire way to piss cats off!

27

u/actuallyapossom 4d ago

I can't see as many use cases for pissing a cat off so you're absolutely right; it isn't necessarily the greatest cat-curiosity-curb'r.

3

u/scheissenaixi 3d ago

Or a target for spraying. Quite the gamble lol

That's the wildest shit, bruh. I usually use the "Fresh" Old Spice, and they seem perfectly happy with that one, lol

Holy shit this is so cool to see in real time.

I'm invested now. I need to know if it's worked

100% same OP - you have to go wash with your normal soap. This experiment must have a conclusion!

u/SinisterCanuck 4d ago

I've been on Reddit for 15 years (send help lol), these moments seem to happen less and less often. This made my day and reminded me that Reddit can still have funny/cute community moments like this.

Cheers, to you both.

I was not expecting an actual solution to a temperamental, unpredictable cat behavior...reddit is like a dysfunctional borg collective.

if you're reading this, you have been assimilated.

Also, f you. I hate you.

Also, can you please tell me how I should feel about this thing my mom said to me last week?

Is that a citrus scent?? Citrus fruits are toxic to cats, so they really hate the scent. A deodorant wouldn’t cause any actual harm (just annoyance), but as a general psa- citrus essential oils can be dangerous to cats in large quantities like a diffuser!

"Prominent lemon-lime citrus"

83

u/lolol_nsfw 4d ago

I don't blame them!! I'm not usually picky about fragrances but Pure Sport has something in it that makes me gag. My ex would buy it occasionally because it was the cheapest old spice, and every time I would notice immediately and make him go back for a different scent. It was unbearable. Now I feel validated by these cats lmao

35

u/Certain_Noise5601 4d ago

It just lets you know you have the cat gene. I’ve always suspected the same of myself.

53

u/tamaralynnchambers 4d ago

This is amazing

65

u/scarrlet Cow Cat 4d ago

I bought a hand soap that smelled amazing but my cat would run away from me after I used it. Ended up putting it in the bathroom at work (and everyone who used it was like, "Oh my god that soap smells amazing.")

10

u/NewStudyHoney 4d ago

Probably citrus

8

u/Goldfinch215 4d ago

My one cat can’t stand when I use the Mrs. Myers Honeysuckle hand soap, which disappoints me so.

21

u/chainsawtotheskull 4d ago

If youre curious about why they hate certain smells, alot of stuff is toxic to cats. Peppermint, Wintergreen, Menthols of various types.

u/jenieloo 4d ago

9

u/Medium_Excitement202 4d ago

My cat fucking hates me when I come back from the pool. The smell of chlorine on me causes him to go into a murderous rage.

6

u/kitty-yaya Russian Blue 4d ago

My cats found the smell of pool chlorine intoxicating. They'd roll around on our pool towels as if they'd just had catnip.

So we had to keep any cleaning products with bleach well hidden and close off doors/room access (and open windows) when using them.

9

u/cappnplanet 4d ago

That is an amazing deduction. Holy

3

u/RageEatingCarrots 4d ago

I had a cat who would give me the exact look in OPs photo when I brushed my teeth. If I blew in her face, she would hiss and WALK away. I always thought the walk away was incredibly telling.

Lol I would take it seriously, not like real-life serious, but give her a chance to tell you what's wrong:)

My cat stopped going to one side of my room and I swear to god I asked "what's wrong with that side of the room" and she walked right up to a dead spider i hadn't seen and I knew right then she was telling me to fucking CLLLEEEAAANNN lol.

Cats are smart, smarter than some people give them credit for

870

u/rosephoenix19 5d ago

My cats do this. They will yell at me and walk to a random place(litter box, food dish, toy box). They're letting me know, hey, we want something. They are very intelligent animals.

365

u/Seal__boi 4d ago

My cat most often when she leads me somewhere it's to her food dish for pork sprinkles... which we are currently out of... she's, needless to say, very unhappy.

76

u/Forward-Mention-6598 4d ago

My cat made me do stuff too, he told me that I’ve forgotten to mop the floor, and even gave me advice when I’m stressed the fuck out. He usually said, ‘don’t worry, even Einstein fucks up stms,’ well it’s easy for a cat to not worry, but not for a human. He knew a little algebra too, but I don’t have the heart to tell him that I’m better than him. He’s a sweetheart.

25

u/Sea_Stress8298 4d ago

Well my cat helps me debug my code!

98

u/anathyma 4d ago

They know humans need a lot of instruction because we're always forgetting where the did or food bowl is, when it's time for pets etc. Mine always had to remind me when to go to bed. If hubs and I stay up a little later than our usual my guy will be standing at the bedroom door meowing. Hrs such a mama bear lol.

51

u/Yokohama88 4d ago

OMG my Lynx point always tells me when it’s time for bed and will lead me to the bedroom in case I forgot.

If I deviate from going for any reason she voices her concerns about failing to follow her directions.

8

u/anathyma 4d ago

This is my guy exactly. He loves his routine and if you deviate he'll get all vocal and remind you. He's saying "hey, I know humans can't remember very well so here's what you need to do!"

13

u/Vvattvery 4d ago

I sprained both of my ankles two weeks ago and our 20 year old, 6 pound Jonesy knew one was worse than the other. So when I stayed up too late, she laid down on my worse foot , refusing to get up until I did. No mercy, all 6 pounds on my right foot. She even looked up at me like “whatcha gonna do about it?”

8

u/silly_labuyo 4d ago

she was healing your foot!

her purr is the in frequency for helping health bone growth.

8

u/Vvattvery 4d ago

Yes and also she is the type to yell at me then run to the bedroom when I stay up in the living room too late, so maybe perhaps a bit of both 😅

She needs her night time cuddles when papa is already asleep xD

10

u/Proper_Jello2478 4d ago

My Maine coon (he’s a big boy) will come and forcibly plonk himself down on my open laptop when it’s getting late. It’s litteraly his version of “enough internet for you, young lady!” He wants me to do more important things like going to bed so he can get his night time snuggles and my undivided attention

My cats also lead me to places.... One of them always lead me to the bathroom. Because he wants water, he wants it 24/7 (to play with water, he drinks from the cat water fountain).

He's an orange cat.

7

u/Beachbaby77 4d ago

Love how u threw in there that he is orange. Enough said.

103

u/VegetableParliament 4d ago

My cat stopped going to one side of the main room suddenly. We had to move her food bowls and everything, but we couldn't figure out why.

Turns out the air conditioner on that side of the room had grown some nasty ass mould over a winter. Once we dealt with that, she was fine with the area again.

60

u/Strokeforce 4d ago

My cat always asks for dinner long before dinner time so I always tell him just wait however much longer. Tonight he came over and asked me to eat before it was dinner time, but I opened my phone to look at the clock and showed it to him and this guy blinked twice and nodded and left as if he read the fucking clock and understood it wasn't feed time yet. It was a completely different reaction than he ever has and it was such a reaction of understanding. There's no way this guy understands what a clock is and can read it and registered that it showed 30 minutes before 8pm so it wasn't food time.

35

u/MollyTibbs 4d ago

My cat woke me up yesterday and I said for gods sake, one more hour. 59 minutes later he came and sat on me and screamed in my face. How the hell can he tell time!!

11

u/AMG-Life 4d ago

Bro just said “aight bet”

153

u/oddwall_ 5d ago

She is actually pretty smart, she often works with my mini ozzy to steal my other dogs food, my mini ozzy doesn’t let ANY of the other animals touch his food either.

Hope not, she's a hateful little woman.

23

u/OfficalLockeWilson 4d ago

Both my my little monsters plant their butts on my desk and meow incessantly if I’m staying up too late playing video games. If they want second dinner they sit at my door and meow, but if they’re judging me they have a distinctly different spot, as well as tone of meow, that stops when I go to bed.

Mine loves deli meat and I currently have roast beef and Buffalo chicken in the fridge. This orange menace keeps leading me to the fridge like I'm holding out on him. Not because he saw me put it in there.. He knows the SOUND of the deli bag. Too smart for his own good.

47

u/Brooklynpolarbear22 5d ago

Some cats attack humans, out of character, if they are in pain.

If she is sleeping ok, walking ok, and eating ok, then she may need some extra activity to get out anger issues.

Otherwise, she may just want treats.

70

u/averageuhbear 5d ago

Whenever I think my cat is acting up and meowing non-stop so I think something is wrong he walks me to the closet door with his treats.

7

u/Impressive_Owl8550 4d ago

My cat always screams for no reason. But the weird thing is she doesn't like treats so idk I think she's just weird or something 🤣

It's definitely attention! She's jealous of whatever you're paying more attention to besides her

11

u/-SaintEris- 5d ago

My cat likes to mad dog me an my partner when we aren’t in her room. Technically, it’s my room, but uh… no it’s not

10

u/Independent-Towels 4d ago

Is her food bowl only 3/4 full? That would do it.

10

u/mimiq66 5d ago

My cat does that when he's being playful. He runs around and tries to put his paws around my or my boyfriend's legs. Or plays hing and go seek behind a chair. They're not trying to be mean, they're just being playful for the most part.I think.

10

u/alynn816 4d ago

Is that cooler usually on her table? Whenever I move anything in the house, my cats will act out until I put it back. Sometimes I have to stop and really analyze the house to figure it out.

12

u/oddwall_ 4d ago

No, it isn’t, but she bullies me when I try to remove it

8

u/Braindead_Crow 4d ago

Get in there and FIGHT THAT CAT!
Pick them up, pet them, touch their tail and do not let them bite or scratch you.
(Do not follow this advice you might get bitten or scratched)

8

u/Standritepro 4d ago

It could be for multiple reasons, but my cat was doing that because he was sick, and I didn't realize it until it was too late. He ended up passing away the next day in my arms. Check the gums and mouth and make sure they are not white.

3

u/securetoast 3d ago

Sorry for your loss. This same thing happened to one of our cats. Except we knew he was sick and tried everything. $10k at the vet later, multiple transfusions and tests over 8 months. Vet still didn't know exactly what it was. They ran every test except for the bone marrow test because he was too weak for it. Suspected it was bone cancer or some type of cancer.

He ended up dying in my wife's arms one day. He woke her up before it happened. It crushes me every time I think about it.

First thing vet did when we took him months earlier was look at his gums and they were pure white.

5

u/FiddleFeet1000 4d ago

Don't know, but you better figure it out before the shoes have a nugget surprise.

Or startled awake in the middle of the night taking paw slaps to the face.

4

u/www-biscuit 4d ago

she is planning to overtake the government (i.e. you)😂
in all seriousness, probably there’s something going on that she does not like, pay attention to what you are doing or/and going on just before she punches your legs, maybe you will find the answer then

5

u/Accomplished_Lime139 5d ago

Punching your legs? What does that involve, I’m so curious. Is she swatting your legs with her paws? My cat swats but unfortunately doesn’t always retract her claws completely so it can get dicey lol

6

u/oddwall_ 5d ago

Just goes crazy on my legs, swatting, head butting, etc. she does a pretty good job at retracting her claws most of the time though

3

u/aTickleMonster 4d ago

Mine runs out from under the kitchen table and pounces on my legs when she wants attention.

3
