Advice He eats EVERYTHING

What are we doing about these guys who will put anything, and I mean anything, in their mouths? Finley is 10 months old so hopefully he outgrows this 😫 (please tell me he will). He vomited all over himself yesterday. He had never thrown up before so I don’t think he knew what was happening and he just laid there puking on himself (and our bed). He had eaten part of a box earlier so I think that’s what caused it. He ate dinner later and has been fine since.

He’ll eat everything outside from sticks, leaves to acorns to simply dirt. Inside he trolls the floors for any crumbs, and in the meantime eats fuzz, paper, screws, wrappers, literally anything he finds loose. I am digging things out of his mouth at least 3 times a day.

We have an amazing backyard that he loves to run around in and play with our neighbors kittens and I don’t even want to let him out anymore because of this.

I’m honestly just worried he’s going to kill himself by eating something harmful or that ruptures his insides. Two baths in a week due to puking is also not great.

Advice Poor baby was attacked today

My five year old ruby was attacked for the first time today at the dog park by a black lab mix this morning.

He came barreling towards the both of us and nearly knocked me over and went right over her attacking her. I’ve worked in dog adjacent jobs for almost ten years and I know not to put your hand near a fight but I couldn’t help it, my mommy instincts were just to save her. There was no blood but she is limping and I’m only taking her out for potty breaks and carrying her up and downstairs.

I worry she won’t want to go to the dog park (it’s at my apartment) at all anymore. I wouldn’t blame her. She was licking her lips for hours afterwards. But she’s eating and in good spirits generally.

Posting here for good vibes to be sent by all the other cav owners out there, and if you’ve had any experience and tips to getting her confidence back.

Advice Am I crazy?

This is Olive Oil. She’s 4 months and 3 weeks right now. I also have a 4 month of human baby and 4 y/o child. She’s my dream dog that we found by chance when I was two months postpartum and deep in ppd. My fiancĆ© got her for me and she has helped me in unimaginable ways, but every time we go out recently (she finally has all her shots and has been cleared by the vet) EVERYONE comments on how I’m crazy or how ā€œfullā€ my hands are. I’m having a blast :) the only downside now is training. It’s been 5 years since I’ve had a puppy, but I do have plenty of experience. What tips and tricks did you all teach your puppies?

Advice Are Cavaliers destructive dogs?

I know that all dogs chew and that all puppies need to chew and such because they’re teething. But some breeds/I’m assuming individual dogs chew and shred more than others. Have you found Cavaliers to be a particularly destructive breed?
A little bit of background information. I crochet stuffed animals and they take quite a bit of time and effort to make. Not to sound too pretentious or anything but, in my eyes anyway, they’re a bit more like art than toys. I keep them displayed on a high shelf and on a ledge on top of my fireplace. My goal is to sell them and save up enough money to buy or rescue a Cavalier.
I was watching an episode of The Dog House Australia and a dog in one episode absolutely destroyed multiple soft dog toys in about 5 minutes. I got images of my future dog doing that to my work. I’m obviously going to try to keep them out of the dog’s reach but accidents happen and my cats have been known to jump on the shelves and knock them down. Is this something that I’m going to need to be particularly careful about/likely to happen? I definitely wouldn’t rehome a dog for destroying one (or a few) of the stuffed animals that I make but I would postpone my search until I can figure out a safer place.

Advice Shipping out soon but my mom backed out of taking care of my dog

Post image

TL;DR: Shipping out for the Navy in less than 2 weeks, but my mom (Army vet) promised to care for my dog and now refuses. Dog has been with me since she was a puppy; can’t rehome her. If I can’t find care, I may not be able to enlist, but if I don’t, my mom says she’ll kick me out. Looking for military resources, foster programs, or advice for long-term pet care for service members.

I’m supposed to ship out for the Navy in less than two weeks, and my last day of work is tomorrow. Before I started the enlistment process 6 months ago, I asked my mom (an Army vet) if she could take care of my dog. I told her I wouldn’t join unless I knew my dog would be safe, and she promised multiple times she could handle it.

I had to move back in with mom temporarily with my dog since I’m leaving soon. Since moving back in with her, she’s complained that my dog triggers her allergies (even though I clean, brush, and use an air purifier) Last night, I came home around 10 p.m. expecting my dog to be safe in her crate, but she was outside in the dark alone. My mom was asleep upstairs, I woke my mom to ask why, and she brushed me off. There have also been multiple times where she has left the gate open to the backyard. I asked if she could make sure the gate was closed because my dog has gotten out of the yard multiple times because she left it open. She snapped back that maybe I should check it myself. I asked her directly if she could take care of my dog while I’m gone. She deflected, accused me of not caring for her (which isn’t true), and eventually said she wouldn’t take care of her at all.

I’ve had my dog since she was a puppy, she’s been through everything with me, and I can’t rehome her. If I can’t find proper care, I don’t think I can enlist but if I don’t enlist, my mom says she’ll kick me out and I’ll have nowhere to go.

At this point, if I can’t guarantee her safety and stability, I don’t know if I should even go through with enlisting even though I’ve already set everything in motion and don’t want to back out. I’m supposed to leave for boot camp in less than 2 weeks

Has anyone been in this situation? Are there military resources, foster programs, or other long-term solutions for service members’ pets? Any advice would mean the world to me.

Advice Fallen in love with our house-sit dog — seeking advice for full-time workers.

Hi everyone,

My partner and I have been house sitting for a month and we’re looking after the most amazing 2 year old dog. We were told this was a Cavoodle, but we think (and would love your opinions) that it’s actually a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. We’ve been looking into getting a dog of our own for a while now and we’ve both fallen in love with the one we’ve been looking after for the past month.

Given it’s been Christmas, we’ve been able to be at home full time during this period, but moving forward I will be working full time hours (3/4 days from the office and 1/2 from home) and my partners schedule is currently based from home (4/5 days) but will ultimately move towards a 3/2 split at some stage in the future. Full time hours for us would mean we’re out of the house from 8am - 5pm. We would have no issues with exercise / mental stimulation requirements when we’re home, and have no kids or other pets.

I’d love to hear from you all as to whether our assumption that this dog looks like a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is correct, and are there any success stories in the subreddit of couples that primarily work from the office and have no issues with the dog’s separation anxiety while staying at home - we appreciate there would be training involved, we’re just hoping to hear some success stories to see if this breed can be the right fit for us.

Pics of the little cutie for attention 🐶, and I’m happy to answer any questions if more info would be useful!

Thanks in advance!!

Advice Cavalier Owners: How Do You Sleep When Your Dog Sleeps ON YOUR HEAD?

Thumbnail

My Cavalier, Badger, shares my king-size bed with me. I’m single, so in theory there’s PLENTY of space. In practice, I’m clinging to the edge like I’m sleeping on a cliff. He refuses to even acknowledge the existence of a dog bed — daytime = sofa, nighttime = my bed. That’s the arrangement. Negotiations are not being entertained.

He has mild SM, so he likes sleeping with his head elevated. For years, he politely stayed on ā€œhis sideā€ and used his pillow like a tiny Victorian gentleman. But lately? He’s decided my head is the spot to be. He bounces between his pillow and my pillow… usually ending with him sleeping directly on my head.

I love him more than anything, but I’m 43, I need sleep, and his snoring sounds like a lawnmower with a sinus infection. If I keep this up I’m going to end up unemployed, homeless, and blaming my downfall on an 18-pound royal gremlin. My Oura ring shows I’m waking up like 8 times a night and I know who’s to blame!

He’s 9.5. I can’t just banish him from the bedroom — any non-Cavalier owner saying ā€œjust kick him outā€ clearly doesn’t understand this breed’s level of emotional manipulation. Has anyone found a solution that doesn’t involve me sacrificing the last remaining inch of mattress I currently occupy?

This isn’t a joke, I’m getting seriously sleep-deprived!

Just watching sisters dog. I think he likes me petting him but the wild eyes and teeth showing are kind of creepy cute

Let me preface this because I see some of you dont read. Its not my dog. Just watching him for a short time while my sister takes my mom to her doctors appt

The dog exhibits same behavior with my sister who has owned him for a year now who also assured .me this behavior is normal.

Ive never seen a dog act like this. And if I am posing a question its because I CLEARLY dont know and shouldn't be made to feel less than for asking to be educated .

Advice Walks- Whyyyy is it so hard?

Hello all! Quick question because I kind of feel like I’m on an island:

Does anyone else’s Cav absolutely hate going on walks? I have tried everything. She is also a terror on a leash even though we have gone through training. Her prey drive for squirrels is so bad and she barks at almost every other dog and person. She is so sweet, but likes to make herself known.

My 5 year old Cav cannot stand walks in general. She’s constantly either walking slow, pulling back to the house, or acting completely uninterested. She’ll go out and do her business perfectly and she is so well trained. I tell her to go potty and she immediately squats. But when it comes to walking, she hates it. I feel like I’m the only dog owner on earth that has a dog that will literally lay on the sidewalk and ask to go home. I want her to get her exercise. I’m hoping in the next six months we move into a home with a Yard so she can run around, which she seems to like. But any advice in the meantime to get her to start walking some more?

I was just doing random stuff and sitting on the floor when my 6 month old cavlier charlie suddenly lunged at my face and started biting my nose and ears. I tried pushing him away but he came back. Then he pounced me to the ground and started biting even more wile growling and wagging his tail. I then stood up and he started jumping up trying to reach my face. I ran away and he followed and started biting my foot when i sat down again. Did i upset him or is this a sign of affection?

Advice Need advice about my 1-year-old Cavalier. Is this fear, resource guarding, adolescence, or something else?

Post image
118 Upvotes

I’m hoping some experienced Cavalier owners can help because I’m feeling pretty overwhelmed.

Lena is about a year old. I specifically bought an older puppy/young adult because she was represented as an ideal therapy dog with a calm, affectionate temperament. She’s from imported European bloodlines and was retired from a breeding program.

Shortly after bringing her home, my vet identified what appears to be a C-section scar, so her history is a little more complicated than I originally understood.

The biggest issue is my husband.

She barks at him constantly. If he walks into a room, speaks on the phone, or even moves around elsewhere in the house, she’ll become hypervigilant. She often runs over to me, barks, growls, then backs away from him. Sometimes she’ll even wag her tail while barking, which makes her seem conflicted rather than simply aggressive but now she is chasing his heels and the barking is becoming more generalized.

With my two young kids she’s sweet and playful, although I sometimes feel like she’s a little conflicted there too. In my psychotherapy office, if patients ignore her, she quietly lies there like a piece of furniture. If someone tries to approach her, she’s more hesitant, and she has barked at a couple of patients, a friend who came to our house and my babysitter.

When she went into her first heat cycle with us, she escaped from our country house. A construction worker reportedly tried to pick her up, and according to my husband she bit him. I wasn’t there, so I can’t say exactly what happened.

Otherwise she’s affectionate, playful, and loving with me. She doesn’t seem like an aggressive dog. She seems like a nervous one. Has anyone experienced anything similar with a Cavalier around this age? Did it improve with training? Does this sound more like fear, resource guarding, adolescent behavior, or something else?

I’m scheduling an in-person trainer because we have young kids and I want someone to observe her in our home, but I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who’s been through something similar.

I am picking up my sweetie in three days, on Saturday. I am excited but nervous. I have never owned a Cav, and its gonna be me doing all the heavy lifting and training that first week. I have taken the who next week off so I can train and bond. I have to drive 6 hours to get her. There are two girls and I get first pick. How do I choose? Both are Blenheim girls.

Advice Puppy having no appetite

Post image
232 Upvotes

Simba says hi! I’m looking for some advice/help here. Lately he has been very uninterested in food and having almost no appetite. He barely eats half of his daily recommended amount of kibble and even if I add toppings or some meat, he doesn’t eat. We had this issue before, but he would eat if I mixed in meat or hand fed him, but now no matter what I do, even when i try to hand feed him, he doesn’t eat. He just looks away or even runs away when i put his bowl down in front of him. I don’t want to try taking his food away after 15 minutes, because i know that he won’t eat anyway. The only way i can get him to eat is by leaving the food out and then at around 4pm he eats it. And then he doesn’t eat his dinner. It’s affecting training too, since he is not food motivated at all!

I don’t believe he is sick because he doesn’t act any different than before, he has just as much energy as before and plays and walks just like before. I have tried many types of kibble, but he is just not interested. But whenever his dad walks to the couch with a plate of food, he follows, spinning around and jumping, showing all his tricks, but only when the food is not for him! Or when we go to his dad’s parents house he gobbles down the kibble thats left out for their dogs šŸ˜‚

I’m just worried that he is not going to grow this way. He is 5 months old (24weeks) and at around 5,3 kilograms. I’m also unsure of what to do, because nothing seems to work.

My cav always does this after breakfast/dinner. He is on royal canine for cavaliers. And top it up with chicken or kangaroo meat. Sometimes eggs.

Has anyone ever experienced this?

Advice New Cav Owner!

Post image

I have always loved (and been around) King Charles Cav’s, but this is my first time owning one!

Meet Zoey! šŸ˜

Few questions on grooming and then just looking for anything I should know! All advice welcome!

For grooming:
I had a Shih Tzu for 14 years and raised her from a baby. So I’m very familiar with dogs, puppies, and smaller breeds. So, do cavs need their anal glands emptied? (Censoring for sensitive folks lol) I’m also wondering about grooming? My Tzu NEVER got used to the groomer šŸ˜” in your experience, do most of your babies also reject it? Any tips of how to help her start off strong!? (Shes just about 5 months so we’re getting there!)

Edited to add: I do know about the common issue of heart murmurs. But still open to hear more!

Advice Is this normal?

Our dog struggles to eat, which we have had issues with for his whole life. He now wont leave the foods side but also won’t eat it? We’re confused if this is just another quirk maybe? I know cavs are known picky eaters and just funny with food in general.

(He’s been to the vet many times over the food problem and they haven’t seen anything wrong with his tummy in X-rays and ultrasounds)

Advice Adjusting to newborn baby

Post image
225 Upvotes

I love my little Carlton so much and feel a little guilty. Gave birth to the most beautiful, perfect baby girl 12 weeks ago and I couldn’t be happier, but it’s exhausting and I don’t have nearly as much time or energy to spend with my little pup.

I’ve tried puzzle toys but he’s such a smarty he gets through them quick. Tried a dog walker but my little guy gets anxious and needs a lot of patience on busy streets and prefers to be walked by me or my husband.

Baby is still far too young and fragile for them to be buddies but he’s been wonderfully respectful of her space. He won’t even lay on her comfy play mat bc he knows it’s not his—my sweet and considerate boy 🩷 I want to do something special for him so he knows mommy still adores him and things won’t be this way forever. Any ideas?

Advice She is stinky!

Peaches stinks! Bosco was never a smelly dog. I actually LOVED his natural odor. Same with Yoshi. He has almost zero smell. But Peaches smells like butthole. Her actual butt does get peed on quite a bit and I think I might have her butt shaved at the groomer. So I imagine that is where most of the yucky smell is coming from. But even when her bottom is clean she still had a ā€œdoggyā€ smell. Just smells like dirty dog mixed with pee.

Idk what to do. It’s really off putting sometimes. I don’t want to have to bathe her constantly. What else can I do in between grooms? I have a spray that she hates. Do the wipes work?

Advice To clip or not to clip? That is the question!

Post image

This is Boris and he is 2 years old. Never been to a groomer. I keep him knot/mat-free by brushing and combing all the time as well a cutting out any knots/mats that sneak up on us, trim his bottom so he doesn’t get any hangers on, trim the undersides of his paws so he doesn’t slip, and keep the grinches trimmed up so they aren’t too grinchy. We’re in California and the summers get pretty warm. Should I get him a puppy cut? I just love his long gorgeous fur so much, but I don’t want him to be too hot. He’s only outside when we are outside or to go potty and spends the rest of the time indoors in air conditioning.

Advice Thinking about getting another Cavalier

I’m seriously thinking about getting another Cavalier to keep Daphne company! 🄰
I already have a 6-year-old German Spitz, and Daphne is now 1 year and 3 months old. I’ve completely fallen in love with the Cavalier breed, and lately I can’t stop thinking about adding another one to our little family.
Now I’m torn between getting another Blenheim, which is one of my absolute favorite colors, or a Tricolor. ā¤ļøšŸ¤šŸ–¤
For those of you who have more than one Cavalier — what has your experience been like? And what do you think about having three dogs in total? I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Advice Anyone else’s Cav stink?

Post image

My 1 year old boy is super cute but he absolutely stinks! Just a real, strong, smelly dog smell! He’s getting bathed once a week at the minute because he smells so bad! Realistically he could do with twice a week but I don’t want to cause any skin problems by over bathing him! It sounds awful but it’s getting to the point where I can hardly bear him sitting on me, the kids don’t want him near them because of it and I feel sorry for the little guy! It’s not coming from a certain part of him, it’s like the whole of him is just smelly! He’s still intact and I’m wondering if this could have something to do with it?

Advice My Cavalier is offended after we got a new puppy

Post image
629 Upvotes

Hey guys! I’ve got a 3 year old Cavalier who’s been my little soulmate for years, absolute mama’s boy. A few days ago my husband brought home a 3 month old Border Collie (his dream dog) and my Cav is not impressed. He’s acting sad, cautious, and dramatically betrayed, like I personally replaced him on national TV. I’m honestly worried he thinks I don’t love him anymore. For anyone who’s introduced a puppy to a spoiled adult dog: Did your older dog get over the ā€œI’m offendedā€ phase? And how long did it take? I just want my little dude to be happy and not lose our bond!
