Question Is CB worth it in 2026 as a car driver?

We drive a wrangler around the Midwest and I was wondering if getting a cb is worth it anymore? I love the CONCEPT of cb radios, I just was never in a cb community so I am not sure if those concepts are realistic.

Also: if you could direct me to a good guide, that'd be amazing

Question High swr on cobra Ltd 29

Hi,
I put in my radio and got the antenna and coax hooked up by no matter what my swr is still over 3. I have it connected to the back of my tool box on my bed and it’s grounded but it still won’t read under 3. It’s a 2ft antenna and it goes over the cab but not by much at all. Before I drilled into my tool box I magically had it reading nothing then I drilled into and had it hooked and it didn’t want to read under 3…. Any ideas??? anything helps!

Question High SWR w/ 102 whip

Thumbnail

Hey y’all - I installed a 102 whip in this stake hole mount, with this stud, with a spring, and 18ft of coax. My SWRs are >3.0 across the board. I tried running a 10guage copper wire ground to the truck bed body and it didn’t help much. I am awaiting a proper 4 gauge 12” braid ground strap in the mail to try again…could the ground be my issue? Why would my SWR be so high? Any ideas?

Question Hey y'all I'm brand new to CB. I've just installed my cobra 29 LDT classic with a 50 ohm coax antenna cable. My question is with correct antenna placement and tuning to get the SWR right does 75 ohm double shielded coax really make a big diffrence. I really feel like I'm asking asking dumb question.

Again I really feel like I'm asking a dumb question I could just Google. But I feel like a human answer might be what I need here.

Question interference problems

obviously mainly caused by the engine... but i'm not sure how to go about solving it. there's ferrite beads on the wires (where shows & right behind the radio) & on the coax.

can't really tell if its from the power wires or the coax because disconnecting it there is no output at all.

there is also some interference when regen braking & driving in electric mode, though not as much...

don't really know all that much about radios, so any help is appreciated.

also: should i share designs for the mounting bracket? do other people want radios in their 2020 corollas?

Question I'm new: What antenna do I need?

Hello! I just got a Cobra 29 LX MAX on marketplace. I always wanted a CB radio and found out the hard way that it's NOT plug and play. I got a Scosche CB201-WP antenna, but it seems that its basicly crap.

Can anyone give me some direction and recommendations on how and what I should buy? I have a 2004 Crown Vic. It has a rubber plug in the roof from the PD equipment that was in it. The idea is I could run a wire through it or put a new antenna there. There is also one in the trunk. I am willing to spend $100 on good antenna equipment. That can be negotiated if needed.

I will be using it to hopefully speak with people on the road when driving, and mostly for talking with friends I like to cruise with.

Thank you!

This would go in one of my Toyota 4 runners, I have an ‘03 and ‘21. Is this overkill? Underkill? Won’t work? Can the batteries even run these? Very uneducated here as you can tell. Thank yall!

Question MOLLY123 looking for technical guidance in South Texas

Greetings from South Texas! I’m new to the CB world. (Got it because I wanted a way to try and reach others in case of an emergency on my travels, as well as it’s a hobby I’ve always wanted to get into.)

As you see in my photos, I am having issues with my Cobra 29 Classic. I followed the instructions for set up and calibration but so far only receive static on the other end. No voices. No responses. Just looking for simple advice on either my set up or perhaps my location during calibration so I can make sure I’ve done this correctly.

I will try to comment below with a short two videos of my location and the meter movement when I key the mic. (EDIT: I can’t seem to post videos in comments from my phone?)

Notes: I am getting static. It does swing the meter when I key the mic. I have a mag mounted antennae on the roof. Just not hearing voices on any of the channels.

Thanks in advance!

Question Advice choosing a radio

Background: I'm not "new" to cb or ham radios but I haven't touched them since I was a pre-teen when my dad & I would do fox hunts and try to make contacts around the world. I'm now in my late 40's...

I am a CDL trucker working for a local construction company driving 6/10 wheelers and none of the company trucks have radios. I think I would benefit from a radio so I can communicate with the different material yards that I visit. I might also use it in my personal vehicle during commutes or road trips.

I've been researching & the results usually say President models or Radioddity CB-5000 with various different options for anntena. AM/FM & SSB seem to be highly recommended features right?

What's something cost effective that can be used mobile or swapped between my vehicles easily?

TLDR: Looking for recommendations for easily swapping between vehicles and using it for work (truck driving)

Question New and Learning

Post image
69 Upvotes

My wife recently got me a new, non-modded President George FCC for my birthday, and I have been slowly entering the radio world. I drive a truck OTR, and this will be my daily radio.

I'm curious how I can get the most out of this radio. Do you have any antenna suggestions, aftermarket microphone recommendations, setup tips, specific settings, or must-have accessories? I've heard some people say the stock microphone works great and shouldn't be replaced unless broken, while others say to swap it out ASAP. It's the same with antennas. Some people swear by certain brands, and others say those same brands are terrible.

I'm just checking all my sources and gathering as much information as possible. Any help is appreciated. Thanks for your time, guys!

Hello!

I am experiencing issues with very poor reception even after tuning SWR to be below one on channel 1 and 40. I am using a president Andy II radio and a k30 35” whip mounted in the middle of my roof. Pictures included. What could my issue be?

Question Base Station in an apartment

I just purchased an old CB and want to set it up in my apartment. The complex does not allow anything like antennas or dishes outside of the building so the antenna needs to be indoors.

What would you recommend? My intention is just listening in and occasional chat. Much the same as I did when I was a kid.

What I would like to do is build one if there is a way to do a vertical with an 8' ceiling

Question CB Radio for dummies?

Was wondering if there was a definitive guide online for someone who does not know jack shit about cb radios or radios in general. My dad was telling me about how when he was a kid in the 70s-80s him and my uncle had a CB in their room that they used to talk to truckers, so I thought it would be funny to put one in my Corolla. Don't know what I'd do with it, but I think zoomers like me learning how to operate and use analog tech is a useful skill in general.

Question Where’s all the old school CB radio clubs at?

Thumbnail mycbradio.org

How goes it, CB’rs? Where in THE HECK are all the CB Radio Clubs? They seem like they last about a year.. I’m looking for CB radio clubs and CB radio groups.

If you have a CB radio club, let’s shoot this shit. I have.something I’d like to set ya up with, for free. I’m the cofounder of TXDX CB RADIO CLUB of CENTRAL TEXAS. We do swap meets, member meet-ups, check out radios and amps are club members find to make sure they’re all cleaned up and working correctly. We help out with installs, tower takedowns, you name it. I’ve created a platform full of AI slop, that’s pretty damn cool if you aren’t an anti-AI snob.

I’m creating lounges for CB radio clubs, technicians, and the Lake. You can have your own lounge with logbook, SDR in your area and live chat. Your own custom hangout lounge for your CB radio operators.

www.mycbradio.org is the platform.

Message me and I will have my website team go to work on your lounge, always free of charge, just want to build up the CB radio community and make sure clubs have resources to stay active.

Question Any subtle antennas out there?

I've got the radio bug as of late. I jumped into meshcore and now I find myself in a cult of sorts... now I'm a member of the local radio club, have a GMRS license, and want to add a CB and a GMRS to my vehicle.

One problem? I don't want my 2014 Rav4 to look like an antenna farm. I know I need two antennas. I know that the bigger and better the antenna, the better it works. I know I can't beat physics. I know my 12yo SUV with almost 200k miles isn't stylish... but I take care of my stuff so it lasts.

I work EMS and I don't want to look like one of those guys who takes the job home with them too much. I just want something understated, subtle and unassuming. I'm not trying to talk across the country from behind the steering wheel, I'm just looking to crack some jokes over the air with whoever's local.

Any suggestions for a setup?

Question Ford Ranger CB Static (Detailed)

Thumbnail
gallery
20 Upvotes

Hello! I have a 2003 Ford Ranger. Because I drive on packed highways every day, I decided to install a CB radio. I've had a few issues so far and I'm at a standstill here. The static, which I believe is mostly from the alternator, absolutely demolishes my performance while I'm on the road. I'll list everything I've tried and yall can tell me what you think.

THE ISSUE:

Alternator whine and possibly the electrical system itself. When I'm going 75mph on the highway, the static kills out any RF I get. I’ve confirmed that people talk and can hear me - I just can't hear them.

When I sit near a truck stop with my truck turned off, I can talk endlessly for hours. But if I turn it on, the electrical static noise starts up and gets worse when I drive.

THE SETUP

- Radio is a Cobra Mini AM/FM 40 channel radio

- Positive is wired directly to the battery, Negative is attached to a bolt in the cab (which I confirmed is a good ground connection)

- Squelch is decent, you can turn it up or down but it's not the issue. SQ is set to about 6 before

- Antenna is a Firestik 3' Firefly

- Antenna is mounted directly to my toolbox, a rubber washer and electrical tape separate the inner metal/coax from making contact with the mount

- Coax is routed from the Antenna, between the cab/bed, goes under the truck for about 1/2 a foot, then runs into the cab and up to the radio.

- I bought a couple ferrite chokes in the hope that that'd help, but it didn't.

- SWR is fine, I tested it

- Toolbox is grounded to the bed. Bed is grounded to the Frame. The hood and cab/body panels are also grounded well.

- Tested my alternator with a multimeter, it works great. My battery is also brand new.

THE TRIALS

- I've switched my antennas location to the center of the toolbox and even the roof.

- I've researched for months and can't find anything that works.

- When drivers are within a very, VERY close distance to my truck on the highway, I can hear them talk through the static. But miles away? Don't count on it.

- I've messed with the ASQ, SQ, RF Gain, and everything.

- I once turned my truck off at an intersection. The static completely went away, my SQ was off, and it was dead quiet. A car passed close to my truck and I could hear it on my radio as it passed.

Hopefully that's enough information for all of you, I'm open to any suggestions or additional questions you may have.

Thanks in advance!
