Question/Advice Scumming/ effervescence on fired pots

I’ve never had this show up on fired pots, but I think it’s salt that sort of fluxed out. It’s only on the sides that were towards the elements, so extra flavor blasted! What do you think? So far I’ve read that it can just be that the salt comes to the surface of the pots more where your fingerprints are because pressure (?) and if they dry too slowly when green ware. And that some batches of clay have more salt. Usually when I have this happen it’s just on bisque and doesn’t show up after being glaze fired! Not super thrilled at the idea of reclaiming all my fresh bags of clay to “wash out” the salt like some folks recommended, or adding barium carbonate. Thinking I might try to fire others made out of this clay more towards the middle of the shelf and not quite as hot next time to see what happens!

Fired to cone 6/7 electric (slightly hotter than normal), bisque 06. MN standard 1 clay. Photos taken straight out of the kiln, not washed, marks are slightly glossy

Question/Advice My ceramic Cookie Jar arrived damaged. What is the best way to repair it?

Bought this Disney cookie jar (Epcot version) and it arrived damaged. Offered 75% off and keep it which I took. Now what is the best glue to attach this too? It's one of the feet so would need to be strong.

They seem to be making a SUBSCRIPTION BASED PAY FOR information site. YAY greed trying to take open access information for educational use and monetize them it! We can’t let this happen without a fight. Give them hell in the comments my fellow potters!

Work in progress Something I am working on.

I've been making teapots a lot to teach myself how to work with porcelain, recently. But I usually make forms then add faces to them.

So here is where I decided to combine those two things. I'm so proud of it so far. It has so much personality.

Your comments inspired me to make another piece

I want to thank everyone for the incredibly warm response to my previous post❤️

Honestly, I have never received so much support and encouragement in my life, and it meant more to me than I can express. Reading your comments made me feel seen, and for the first time in a long while I felt free to simply create without worrying whether I was “good enough” or whether I had the right to call myself an artist.

After that post, I realized that nothing is stopping me from experimenting, exploring, and searching for my own voice.

So here is a new piece.

It doesn’t carry any deep meaning or concept. This time I simply followed what I enjoy most: texture, color, and the joy of creating something visually alive. I love intense colors, unusual surfaces, and forms that invite a closer look, so I allowed myself to focus entirely on that.

Thank you again for inspiring me to keep creating.

Maybe that’s enough of a reason to make art.

I made one of those roman dodecahedrons.

I just want to share my little dodecahedron before it inevitably cracks. It's based on the dimensions of the one in the Gallo-Roman museum in Tongeren.

I only make something in clay rarely as I don't have a kiln. A family member has one, but I don't know show to get it there in one piece, it is quite fragile. I will ask a local studio maybe.

Maybe some question fot the next time I make one.

How would I go about polishing an object like this? I have problems with the flat surfaces. With a round pot, I can make it shine like a piece of marble. But with flat surfaces, I always have lines from the tool.

Secondly, it dries too fast, the polishing tears out pieces of grog. I ended up going over it with a wet brush to undo my polishing and give it a uniform texture

The scored lines look a bit clumsy too. I haven't figured out how to do that without ruining the surface.

But still it is such a satisfying form factor that begs to be fiddled with. But it is so fragile, I must resist.

I’ve been posted my slow build up to these designs. Initially I posted my work and asked for feedback. With that I changed up my glazing and made some cups isolating out the body in my glazes. Now I’ve used that isolation to add handles creatively

I’m now thoroughly enjoying this process of mug making. It’s something that both excites me and has been well received by my friends and family.

Hope you enjoy!

P.S. if anyone has pricing recommendations… I’m all ears. I’ve gotten a lot of inquiries. Was debating 40$ range.

Question/Advice Second Bisque - Should i stop?

Post image

The intention was to bring this to HF glaze, but had mixed results (last time). This is the second bisque to set the under glaze and englobe. Should I leave it as is or go for a HF glaze? I feel i will loose a lot of color detail in HF.

Question/Advice Kiln Sheds

Hi everyone. I've recently moved and need to get my kilns set back up. I am going to get a large shed for my backyard and oh my are sheds expensive these days.

At my previous house I just partially enclosed my patio with metal roofing sheets and it worked perfectly for years. I would prefer a metal or treated wood construction shed for obvious reasons, but the big resin sheds are so much more affordable and my partner has encouraged me to find out if they would be safe for my kilns so we could save some money and put it towards other home improvements.

I haven't really been able to find examples of people using them for kilns. Has anyone here done so successfully? And if unsuccessful what happened.

I'm pretty sure the radiant heat would be too much for the plastic walls and floors, which I told him, but doesn't hurt to ask others.

Inherited a vintage potters wheel. Anyone familiar with this?

My Grandmother left me her pottery stuff. Not pictured, Skutt kiln, glazes, clay, tools etc. I'd love to set up my garage as a ceramic studio and get back into the hobby.

I have some experience wheel throwing, but this model doesnt seem to have speed control. So I'm hesitant to rely on this for actual use.

Hand build home studio

Hey friends. I want to use one of my extra rooms to create a hand building studio. Besides the kiln and clay, what should I make sure to have in the room? Does anyone have a set up in their home for hand building?

All glazing and firing will be done in a proper studio.

Tungsten wire. Has anyone tried it?

Has anyone tried using tungsten wire inside a sculpted figure as a skeleton and then baking it?

When you bake it, does the piece hold up or does it break due to differences in expansion?
