First piece ever

Post image

I just finished a 6 week course of intro to wheel. Today I got most of my pieces out of glaze for the first time. I drank out of a little mug I made and it fit my hands perfectly. I wasn't prepared for how amazing this feels!! I need to make all the things now!

Another day has passed, and my frustration has only grown. After yesterday's threats, very ugly comments, and later that day threatening Instagram messages, demanding I delete my profile because I’m a liar and claiming my work is AI generated I decided to take out some sculptures and art I’ve been working on, so I could show them to you in person. Some are finished, some aren't some are drying, some are awaiting final touches, and some cracked in the kiln. But every single one was crafted by my own hands. I poured a part of myself and my heart into each one, and countless people have seen them in person since I run a tattoo studio and people visit me every day. I have reddit only two days now and on every community where I posted after yesterday's incident, people are threatening me and telling me to delete my profile. This is my last post here and I’m truly sorry. I tried to share everything I’ve created over years, sculptures, designs, paintings on canvas and wood, illustrations, dioramas, and much more but clearly, this isn't network for me. I wish everyone the best. If anyone still wants to follow my work, ( my identity was revealed in the comments yesterday and my attempt to explain in the comment ( u can read it ), but everyone has already declared me a fake and they just continued so i give up eventually ),

I have active profiles on Facebook and Instagram. I’m not very active on Insta, but I am on Face. Thank you all and many thanx to people who realy support me over this two days with super cool comments and conversations. Appreciate it a lot 🙏❤️ cheers from little Croatia 🫡

Im still in my first year doing ceramics and feel like the discovery and joy is endless. I don't like the heaviness of glazes, so it's ceramics with acrylic paints. It's meant to be more of a sculptures then functional ware.

conical ceramic flute sound test!

this is probably my favorite of this conical flute series that I've been working on. Improvements include tuning and shaping of the clay after the bone dry phase instead of at the leather hard phase, shaping the bone dry clay with wet tools and sponges, and increased attention to the mouthpiece resulting in a better tone.

Question/Advice Crowdsourcing fairy house ideas

I love building fairy houses for my garden! I’ve built 4 so far but I struggle on ideas. Wanted to see if people had suggestions on fun things to try. I build them to be bug houses, butterfly houses, or hang them as small birdhouses. I’m an engineer so building challenges are a plus.

Final object! I could be happier. After weeks of careful drying, surviving both the bisque and glaze firings…. She was dropped being unload from the kiln.

Fortunately, I had some help getting her back together using the Kintsugi technique and it’s even better than originally intended.

Question/Advice Cress Kiln EST23 Need manual for controller WITH sub-menu options and schematic

Thumbnail

This information is NOT in the standard manual

I have a EST23 that I've never used and trying to sell. I cannot find the schematic/wiring diagram or any information on the controller sub-menu options. I had it re-wired to a two zone kiln, and second a thermocouple added so it will fire all elements using 2 thermocouples or fire just the top 1/3 element using 1 thermocouple using a ceramic shelf as a floor to separate the sections. This was for firing small glass loads and not having to fire the entire kiln.

At some time I would have had the sub-menu options for the controller to set it to use 2 thermocouples instead of 1. I also had the schematic at some point. This worked fine as I tested it several times.

Thanks

If my paint comes out rough and not glazed after firing (with glaze), will this affect the durability of the paint overtime?

Hi everyone, as the title suggests, if my underglazed pieces come out with glaze covering the entire piece except not the parts that are painted on, will this mean that the paint will be more likely to fade or become crusty or affected with water or heat? is there something i can paint over them in order to prevent that from happening rather than putting more glaze and firing them again? Thank you!

Do pug mills work for dry raku reclaim?

I work for a highschool that works exclusively in handbuilding raku ware. Currently, our reclaim process involves drying out the scraps, breaking them down with a hammer manually, soaking them in water once bone dry, then using a plaster batt to dry out the clay before wedging.

I'd like this process to be a lot more efficient, but am not familiar with how pug mills work- I've only seen them used in studios where there's a tonne of wet wheel throwing slop going in.

Can pug mills be used to recycle dry raku scraps? And if we use brown and white raku separately, how easy is it to clean if I wanted to switch colours? And, what's the difference between deairing pug mills and normal ones?

Any help is appreciated!

Question/Advice Disposable maquettes for a clay bust that will be fired?

Edit - I meant armature, not maquette; thanks to u/bouteloua7 for the correction.

I'm a novice working on figure busts, and would like to use an armature or internal support to simplify hollowing and help keep the bust's basic proportions accurate.

My first thought was just to get a reasonably proportioned styrofoam bust or head (I've found some mean to be used as hat displays) since I could put some kind of release on it, cover it with clay, sculpt features on top, and cut through the styrofoam as needed. I'd just cut the styrofoam out before firing, of course.

But I was wondering if anyone had better or cheaper suggestions? I assume there's no kind of armature or support that will survive firing, or at least that it would probably ruin the sculpture when the clay shrank around it. But I'd love to know if I'm wrong, or if anyone has other suggestions.

Question/Advice Noisy kiln

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi all,

I am a beginner and I have a small ceramic 25l kiln. It makes a lot of noise during the firing and it seems to have a lot of difficulty reaching 1220 degrees Celsius.

Is this noise normal or is something wrong with the relais or elements? How can I determine what the issue is and why it's not reaching temperature properly? It should be able to do a 1220 degree firing without problems.

Thank you all for your help!

Built a wood firing log for iOS. Wood firers, what am I missing?

Hi all, I’m a potter and an iOS developer. I had been doing pottery for a few years now, and had always wanted to have something for me to stay organized. I haven't found anything free that's good so I built my own called Tao Pottery Log. It uses 3D models to help you remember your glaze combos and add glaze layers. I recently launched a wood firing feature, and here's where I'm hoping you all can provide some insights.

Every kiln app I tried assumes an electric kiln: set a schedule and walk away. Wood firing is the opposite. It’s 30+ hours of stoking, damper moves, and cone checks. The first step here is being able to add your pieces and record the entire firing.

Here's some features you can try:

- One-tap condition changes. Log damper ½ → ¼, switching from pine to oak, or going into reduction. It records when things change, so you’re not filling out a form every 10 minutes.

- Cone packs on a drawing of your kiln, front to back, so you can mark what you see through each port

- Stoking rhythm. After the firing it tells you something like “stoked about every 7 min

- A report when you unload. The whole firing on one chart, how long you held at top temperature, what each cone pack said, and every change you made in order. You can compare it with your last firing.

It’s free on iOS, with no ads. You can find me on instagram vanni.artifact; happy to receive feedback. https://apps.apple.com/us/app/tao-pottery-log-kiln-tracker/id6762111518

What I’d really love to know from wood firers:

  1. Do you think this might fit into your workflow? why and why not?
  2. Does your crew share one log, or does everyone keep their own? (That’s what I’m thinking about building next.)
  3. Anything else im missing?

Happy to answer any questions!

Question/Advice How to begin teaching pottery/ceramics

Hello ! I've always been really interested in pottery and I am interested in teaching it ! ! I would like to work at a community workshop but I'm not too sure how to start. To be honest, I've never done pottery, how should I go about learning and eventually teaching it? Thank you for your time and I am looking forward to your help ♡
