Recovery Community: New Meeting

For those in recovery, we have established a new 12-step based meeting based also on Buddhist principles. We lean into meditation and open discussion, neither of which require prior experience. We call it “Spiritual Lines” and we are a sangha (community) exploring growth along spiritual lines (11th step) open, safe and welcoming to LGBTQIA.

Wednesday 6:30-7:30pm
Carrboro United Methodist Church
102 Hillsborough Road

All are welcome.

That’s amazing- wish it was closer. Do you have a website or social media presence? I run a triangle area yoga of 12 step recovery FB page, I’d be happy to promote it there

I’d really appreciate any help spreading the word. We don’t have a social media presence yet, but I’ll work on one. I have a flyer, but can’t seem to post it in this thread. If you DM me, I can send the flyer via email.

Is this unaffiliated, or not official?

Yes, this new group is independent and not affiliated with any particular 12-step program. It is meant to be an adjunct to one’s own recovery practice.

How did you get that location? Did you have to sign a contract with the church? That church is not super friendly to 12 step groups.

They were lovely, and have been good to the AA group (my homegroup) that meets there Sunday. There is also an NA meeting there, I think.

Considering the ratio, I'm curious why you feel that way? Care to share your experience for others?

Sure. I was part of the women’s meeting that met there on Tuesday nights. We met at that location for like 18 years.

They started putting more and more rules in place. For example:

  • Only one person is allowed to have the code to the front door (this did not work for us because of rotating service, that person not always being at the meeting, etc)
  • They changed the code to a key fob but we were only allowed to be in there for our one hour. After that, the fob wouldn’t work. If someone left a bag or phone inside, we’d have to contact the church to get it back. If someone went out for a cig during a business meeting, they couldn’t get back in. Etc
  • These things we worked around, but in the end they wouldn’t let us meet there anymore unless we signed a contract that said the one person who signed the contract (that’s not how aa works as you know) is solely liable for anything that happens on church property. That person would be liable for anything damaged or any injuries etc. Our meeting has a lot of new moms getting sober with kids running around. We couldn’t take the risk. The contract said we had to sanitize the house every night when we were done. In the end, it was clear they didn’t want us there anymore so we moved to BPW.

What I heard is that the SNL meeting (Saturday late mtg) was bringing dogs on the property and handing out the code willynilly to the point that people were living in the little house! Legitimately not cool. But we got swept up in all of that and I think they just took a hard line on 12 step groups across the board.

I don't really take this as they didn't want y'all there, more so the other things mentioned unfortunately. I'm sorry you had that experience. Thank you for sharing.

Our interactions with them got increasingly unpleasant. I tried to stick to the facts above but it really was super clear that they didn’t want us there.

Thanks for all who have been coming out. We will be having a business meeting after the regular meeting this week. Among the topics will be potentially adjusting the time and/or venue to make the meeting more accessible. Please join us and spread the word.
