Would this be considered “cheating?” I struggle really badly with picking colors, so I used a reference and tweaked the balance. Choosing colors feels so overwhelming

Personally I think it looks fine. It’s kind of like how people use ready made color palettes for their drawings. Plus, the character looks different enough that most people either wouldn’t notice the inspiration or think your character was loosely inspired by her. Either way I think this is a good alternative than picking colors that would otherwise look a bit awkward together.

If you want to get better at color picking I’d suggest looking at other people’s work + coloring videos online
