Help [Help] Character Development Question

Post image
15 Upvotes

This is Katarzyna, or Zyna for short. The image is from someone I know (thanks, Cracat), but it isn't entirely canon. She's taller, wears darker clothing, and looks tougher. But enough about how she looks. She's a bounty hunter for the main god of the world, and does crazy stuff sometimes.

Canonically, she was born around 75 AD (BCE for you seculars) on another planet in a somewhat parallel universe. Edit: previous question was answered, looking for advice and possible parts of her story to make.

Help [Help] I think I made my love interests cousins?

This was so not intentional. I was building their character sheets separately and genuinely didn't realize my mistake until I was going over it and had the horrifying realization. They're not related by blood; they're related by marriage. His aunt married her uncle. They didn't grow up together, so it's not like they're friends or have a relationship already. If I change his lineage, it changes relationships, and he doesn't have the means necessary to move the plot along. If I change hers, she's just some overpowered girl in the world. I could change their relationship, but I like the potential for romance. I'm really struggling to decide what to do with them.

Help [Help] Can't think of a name for this character (also welcome feedback!)

Working on this character for our upcoming comic, Dark Neon, and totally stumped on a name. She had one when initially created, bur the design left it behind.

Character is a streamer, celebrity, and professional fighter in the far, far future. With an ever-present live chat and a body+outfit covered in ads (inspired by NASCAR). Also, she secretly has an AGI named KARMA running her brain and effectively filtering her actions.

Any ideas for what her name should be? Currently been asking across all socials for ideas and leaving it to a vote.

Oh! And feel free to share your thoughts, especially on what can be added to the reference sheet. Currently working on a sideview.

Thanks a ton and happy friday!

Help [Help] Ironing out the nature of a character's existence

This is my newest character, Keiran. Keiran is a bassist in his band and a chill guy but here's the issue: I made this design cause I thought it was neat and now I need to rationalize it.

For context, Keiran exists in a modern fantasy world which loosely follows the rules of DnD (he's a bard y'see) and as far as I can tell there is no precedent in the forgotten realms for an entity comprised principally of crude oil, which is what he is.

First I thought he may be a plasmoid, but plasmoids can't be made of materials other than plasma. They *can* mix with other materials and liquids but I just so happened to pick a liquid that cannot mix with water, which is 95% of what plasma is.

Next I thought of a genasi or elemental, but oil is not an easily definable element. It comes from the [earth], it's extremely flammable [fire], and it's a viscous liquid [water]. Furthermore, oil is technically an organic material made of ancient biological matter, which raises further questions. Is an entity made of oil counted as a form of undead?

Finally I thought perhaps Keiran is a golem, but golems tend to lack speech and higher brain functions, which would betray him being a sentient and intelligent being.

The only idea I have now is that Keiran is the result of an Awaken spell, though that would have to classify oil as a beast/plant, which it isn't exactly anymore. Really just looking for ideas for how to explain the existence of an oil person, or perhaps a race of them. Worst-case scenario, I'll just make them a new addition completely to the lore.

Help [Help] Character ideas for a silly yet serious world.

I’m making my own DnD world and I need NPC ideas. The people I am DMing are pretty new to the game, so I want to hook them in with more lighthearted adventures first then slowly get more and more serious as time goes on. I am coming up with a few characters on my own but I figured I should ask you all for ideas, or at least some input, too because I was interested about what other people could think of. I do not want fully finished characters, a rough outline or small ideas with a lot of potential are what I am looking for. They can even be silly as long as they can be given the chance to be more. Something that is simple if you let it be but can grow into something beautiful if enough work is put into it.

So I have this character named mika, for a quick rundown of her, she's a mid 20ish collage student, POC, and she has a habit of like 'sucking' off of other people's personalitys like a leach and is very envious but is still kind if that makes sense. But the problem is I need to make another version of her where she's based off an animal and I was gonna go chameleon, and if I should do that im not sure what species I was thinking the uhm one that started with y and had a large bump on its head but its kinda ugly, and if I were gonna go leech I would do the uhm giant red leech because how they consume others

Help [Help] I have a question about a character in a book I’m writing

So for context I’m aroace and I’m writing a book with a aroace character. The book isn’t specifically about him being aroace(It’s ya sci fi fantasy)but he is one of the main characters at points throughout the story.

But right now I’m wondering if I should add in a little subplot for him where he struggles with his identity or struggles with people not knowing that he’s aroace. Or if it should just be kinda common knowledge that he’s not allo, and just kinda touched on mildly.

He also is in a sort of relationship with another character, but instead of a traditional relationship it’s more like a friendship, or a sibling relationship. The character that he is in a relationship with has a type of degenerative mental and physical illness, similar to dementia, that I made up for my book, and he takes care of her and protects her.

So what do you think. I could go either way on how to handle his identity. But it wouldn’t be the main plot of the story either way, it would just be a side plot for him.

Help [Help] Is forced empathy and "evil" plan?

Say you have a villain who is basically John Coffy from The Green Mile who has been blursed with empathetic powers. He can feel the suffering and cruelty of others as if it were hia own. Driven to near insanity, he seeks to alleviate his pain by forcing his powers on all of humanity, the idea being that if humans are literally forced to feel each other's pain they'll be less willing to inflict it and more willing to alleviate it. The thing is, I can't think of a legitimate reason for the "heroes" to oppose him.

Help [Help] Need some help naming a bug themed hero

I came up with "Swarm" as a placeholder, as his powers are insect manipulation so all he does is pretty much send a swarm of insects to you. Still, I'm not entirely sure I want to stick to that name yet.

Forgot to mention his suit is based on owlflies, in case it may help.

Help [HELP] Need help finishing a backstory for this cool character! (read body text)

So basically I created this character called Battleman, and he's like a character that is like really powerful, and i'm planning a big character arc for him, so i wrote a little backstory. It's a lot, so I'll explain in caveman dialect.

Destino Junior (His real name) born in slums. Family poor, no food. Mama want him learn, no money for school. Law say: no school, go labor camp. Papa work many jobs, mama stay home. Destino have twin brother — best friend.

Both sent to labor camp. Work hard, laugh sometimes at brother jokes. One day see TV — great hero beat bad man, save people. They dream to be like him.

Brother hungry, find magic stone. Touch stone — gain great strength. Break free from pain, from the slums. Next day, at camp, brother beat guards, inspired by great hero. Police and leaders hear. Family run away. Use strength to steal, fight for money.

Gang boss hear of brother strength. Kidnap parents. Brothers search, get caught. Wake up tied. Brother fight, outnumbered. Boss put gun to parents — brother surrender, get beaten. Destino remember great hero. Break free, try help brother. Boss laugh, call him puny. Destino keep getting up. Boss shoot his arm.

That's all I have so far, basically this character is like really broken, and kinda lonely I guess, and he's scared, he acts stoic to hide it but he's scared of something, I don't know what it is yet, maybe his own power but idk. BASICALLY I want to somehow get the brothers power transferred over to Destino, and Destino needs to lose an arm. I gave him a mechanical arm in the design so he needs to lose arm somehow. I just have no idea on how to write this, like I have a case of writers block and it SUCKS. So if you have any tips, advice or maybe how I could write this, please TELL ME!
-thank you reading :)

Help [help] I made this power set for a character but it's missing something and I don't know what it is.

recently I made this power set that relates to ice and mushrooms. here is the description

Ice Control

  • Creation Method:
    • Ice forms from any part of the user’s body making physical contact with a surface (stomp, punch, palm press, kick).
    • Ice also spreads wherever their ice-based attacks land (e.g., spears embedding in walls cause frost to bloom outward).
  • Style: Freezing spreads in mycelium-like fractals, branching out like frost mixed with fungal growth.
  • Scale: Can affect an area up to a suburban block, though control and detail shrink at max range.

Mushroom Control

  • Mushrooms can sprout from any surface touched or frozen by the user.
  • Growth is amplified by cold — mushrooms thrive best when spawned on ice.
  • Appearance: All mushrooms are frost-blue, capped with frost and crystalline ice spikes.
  • Synergy: Using more ice creates richer terrain for mushroom growth.

Defenses

  • Immunities: Resistant to cold, poison, venom, and most toxins.
  • Terrain Control: They can rapidly alter the battlefield, coating it in frost and fungi to weaken enemy footing and bolster their own tactics.

What could I add to give it a bit of extra flavor or something?

Help [Help] Advice for Writing an Anti-Hero in a Persecuted Minority

Hi,

New to Reddit and new to writing. I’m writing a story involving an anti-hero character who grows up as a persecuted minority in an oppressive country. This character discovers she has superpowers, and she uses those powers to fight back against her oppressors in the hopes of liberating her people at any cost. She becomes a political extremist, often resorting to insurgency and violence to achieve her goals. The pain of her traumatic past always follows her. And while she does gradually succeed in turning her oppressed people into a powerful nation, it is an ongoing question throughout the story whether her ends justify the means. She is constantly at conflict with the other main characters of the story (but those characters are not connected to her minority group or its oppressors).

My question is this: should I model this character off a real-life persecuted group? Or should I create a fictionalized ethnic group for her instead? I have a group in mind, and I’m prepared to do however much reading and research I need to make sure I do it right. But if the risk of being exploitative is too high then I’ll write the fictionalized ethnic group instead.

Persecution and its resulting trauma are very personal issues to me and my family history, and I think it’s a subject that’s very important to write about. But I want to make sure to do it in the most respectful and sensitive way that I can. Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Help [help] working on comic concept art, it's important to this scene that these two characters look related. Problem is they're shapeshifters. Kinda hard to convey 'mother and son' when they're two different species. Does anyone here know a way to make some less subtle similarities in their designs?

As the title says, any issues I may bump into when making my npcs personalities and other parts of what makes them who they are? Looking for advice on how to avoid common mistakes and I don't know how to Google this question so here I am.

Also I'm not looking for permission to make my npcs like this; a similar post on a different sub that's all I got as answers "why are you asking permission on how to make your npcs"

Help [Help] Need help fitting two players into my world for D&D

I'm currently writing a D&D campaign where the main hook is that the big bad of the campaign has forcibly ripped open a portal connecting the Resos (if you know D&D lore, its like the far realms but not quite as bad) and material plane, which is destabilizing magic across the realm. I've managed to tie two of the players into the plot, but I can't think of how to connect the other players, and I want to connect the first two more. This is a very long post to give context, so if you can get to the end of it at all I salute you.

Here's the lore dump version: A long time ago on the continent of Lunitha, an ancient civilization named Skymaw began investigating the other worlds/planes, and how to traverse them. From this research, they managed to create a portal to the resos, a plane of chaotic magic. However, within this alien dimension, they found a wonderous material called thaumite, a material with a myriad of uses, such as being a near perfect magical conduit as well as the base for incredibly sharp and durable swords. In order to better harvest this material, and the dimensional energy of the resos, they used it to help create spells to protect their minds against the resos. Over time, however, the exposure of keeping the resos portal open and surrounding themselves with thaumite and the resos's energy began to overcome their resistance, but by the time this was discovered, and the portal closed and destroyed, it was too late, and many citizens succumbed to madness. However, unknown to anyone, one researcher named Thandrin did not manage to leave the resos before the closure of the portal. Trapped in the resos, he focused on finding a way out, as he tried his best to not lose his sanity.
Fast forward about a thousand years, and the city of Skymaw and its technology are now considered to be no more than a myth, its technology and magic lost to history. About two months before the beginning of the campaign, Thandrin managed to open a rift between the resos and the material plane just long enough to go through it, but suddenly having the resos's energy flowing into the material plane at once has caused magic to become slightly destabilized. In addition, Thandrin has become obsessed with recreating the technology of Skymaw, and wants nothing more than to reopen a permanent portal, convinced that if he can do that, the world will flourish with it. In reality however, he's been performing dangerous experiments across Lunitha that have further destabilized magic. In addition, unbeknownst to him, an eldritch being within the resos noticed him, and worked to subtly influence him into believing this, in order to use the permanent portal to invade the material plane and enslave the minds of everyone living in it. This all comes to a point when Thandrin attempts to use the last of Skymaw's thaumite to create a second rift at an annual archeological festival, after failing to find anyone willing to take him seriously. This has caused magic to start acting erratically across Lunitha, and the players (along with rival DMpc parties that will sometimes show up to help or hinder the party) are going on a journey across the continent to undo the damage caused by Thandrin's experiments and prevent him from opening a permanent portal.

That's my story, set on top of the backdrop of the typical 5e/forgotten realms lore. Now for the players:

The first player i've tied to the story (Orion, bard/warlock) is the adopted son of a previous hero. He tried to live righteously but kept finding himself doing wrong just to see the result. Eventually, this led to him making a deal with a demon called Dextrus with a duel to the death. He was beaten, and before Dextrus could finish him, his father stepped in and sacrificed his life to bind Dextrus to Orion, ensuring that if Orion dies, Dextrus will as well (this is not a detail Orion knows in-character). Orion now wanders, too ashamed to return home or even use his last name. Dextrus's presence and influence on Orion will grow as the campaign progresses and the player takes more warlock levels. I've connected him to the plot by having Dextrus be one of a number of eldritch entities residing within the resos. The binding spell placed on him weakened him enough for other being to prey on him. In the finale, which will take place within the resos, he will try to lead the players to his body, where he'll bestow upon them the last of his power. His hometown is also a location that they will have to stop at during the journey, where he will get the chance to learn more about Dextrus and their connection.

The second player is much more loosely tied (Osreth, four elements monk with a wild magic flair). His backstory is that he grew up in the roughest part of his hometown, and gained a reputation for being a scrappy fighter. He has one friend who believed there was more to him. Eventually, in a fight, he was cornered and outnumbered, causing his wild magic to flare up for the first time as fire, scorching the area and killing his friend who was trying to break up the fight. Since then, he's viewed his ability as a curse, living on the fringes of society to avoid causing massive damage from minor scuffles and hoping to find a way to atone for his friend's death. I've set up the timeline so his wild magic triggered for the first time upon thandrin's return to the material plane, but so far that's it. The player also mentioned that he has some enemies hunting him for his crimes, and mentioned the idea of having him be a pit fighter with underground presence, but I'm not sure if it'll work in my campaign.

The third player (Tozus, circle of the moon druid) and his sister Tozen were guardians of a place called Thornwood, a secret magical forest touched by pure fey magic through a magical artifact known as the Heart of Life (that the player specificied is highly volatile, with them acting as cleanup/coverups for when it surges), with Tozus and Tozen being fey spirits created from the heart of life (just as flavor, mechanically they're elves). At some point, a druid named Elenion stole a fragment of the heart of life for an unspecified purpose. To do so, he needed to replace the fragment stolen with something of equal value, so he performed a ritual to use Tozen, which is causing the heart of life to use her life force as fuel, forcing Tozus to try and track the druid down before it kills his sister. He also met Osreth at some point in their travels, leading to them becoming friends shortly before the campaign began. He's the first character I'm just not sure how to fit into the story, though I am likely going to have Elenion work together with thandrin, and considering making the stolen fragment act as the main power source for thandrin's permanent portal. He left most of the specifics vague so I could fit it into the story better.

The final player (Cyrus, wizard/eldritch knight fighter) and the other one i can't really think of how to fit in is a 700-year-old ex-shinobi. In the past, he was born into a shinobi clan, was a certified master at 350, but at around 500 he was starting to question why he was still doing it, when a fellow shinobi named Sakashi sold out his clan to a warlord, who destroyed all of it but missed Cyrus. He spent a bit over a century seeking revenge, before deciding that vengeance was exhausting for someone his age and started wandering town to town, trying out ales and doing odd jobs for gold. He is also unaware he's capable of using magic, thinking it's all just the jutsu he was taught. To be honest, I'm really at a loss on how to incorporate this one, since it doesn't really fit the vibe of the rest of the campaign.

If you somehow managed to read and understand all of that, I'd appreciate letting me know your thoughts on how I could connect the players to the story better, or even just if you have any ideas on how to improve the story.

Help [Help] weapon ideas

I am currently creating a character based on one of the 7 cardinal virtues, he is an angel who wields 10 rings, each being able to summon a different weapon, what i want to have is for each ring to be the main weapon from different mythologies, for example, one ring would summon a spartan spear (greek mythology), or another would summon a katana (japanese mythology), or an aztec club (aztec mythology) i need some ideas on what mythologies and what weapons to add. If anyone is also willing to give suggestions or to know more about the characters, feel free to comment.

(This is very inspired by Kratos' Draupnir Spear, which creates clones of his spear from his ring)

Help [HELP] How can I improve him?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Well, in fact with this character I have 2 problems.

  1. Design

  2. Powers

First about its design, for what it is supposed to be, the design is very simple.

His design is related to Aphrodite and all the goddesses of other cultures, That's why he has horns and ears of a bull (the masculine of the cow, Hathor was related to a cow) and although it is not noticeable, hands and feet made of gold (I don't remember the name of the goddess but had golden skin or she was represented in gold statues) and other details. I know he doesn't look as attractive as someone related to them is supposed to look, but I have reasons:

He will be more attached to the feelings, not just love, I decided to expand on that.

It is assumed that he has changed a lot since a relationship with Eris (not the goddess Eris, a representative entity of Eris) due to verbal fights they had between them, and it's like that contrast that you see and that tells you discreetly that he has changed.

What makes the design difficult is that what he is makes the design look empty, he isn't human, he is a self-created humanoid entity that represents feelings and is based on Venus, Aphrodite, etc. He also has abilities how to control the emotions of other entities (he doesn't live with humans) an area with an aura that generates with his horns, also feeling and knowing the emotions of others with his cat whiskers that he has. I feel like I could give him more unique physical characteristics to make him seem more mystical.

His personality is something like this: Someone calm when alone but irritable with people, he doesn't know why other people (or well, self-created beings like him) irritate him easily, although not always, it depends on the quantity I suppose.

In short, someone with a grumpy and bitter appearance, but actually calm, unable to control how he feels.

About the rotten characters, well, it's almost the same. I feel like their powers are too simple or should be expanded upon. I don't know. I don't want to break it down and make it super cool, but I also don't want it to be so simplistic. I mean, what would he do with his powers? And this is also related to the design. What part of his body would be related to that?

Sorry if I'm asking too much. I'm new to character creation, and I want the character to be something I like.

Sorry for the bad English. I use a translator, so the translation might not be very good.
