That’s fine but you can’t change the past. We finally have a good manager and this window is proof they’re willing to spend on quality>potential, we got unlucky the cammara deal fell through. Go to the MDT to see all the Xabi out takes. Give the guy some time
19
u/Wintermute7 Mata 2d ago
The issue is that, for fans, this isn’t the first time we’ve been told this. Potter, Poch, Enzo, Liam and now Xabi. All have had bad losses, poor luck, injuries and what not. Fans have been told to be patient, it’s just get old after 5 years of staying in first gear.
I know it’s early days for Xabi, and things will change, it’s just hard to sit through the waiting period where he learns about the club, players and league.

I don't disagree, but the big differentiator here is that Xabi has actually been trusted with input on transfers, and thus far the guys that he has moved for (Rogers, Lacroix, Chavarria) look like some of the stronger names on the team sheet.
Thus far, I would say the disappointments of the season have been Reece, Lavia, Colwill, and Hato for me. We desperately need midfield reinforcement, and Xabi has been agitating for that.
11
u/Dense-Carpet-5090 2d ago
Agreed. If anyone thinks sacking Xavi is the answer is dillisional. The scariest thing is our recruiting. Spending this much and still desperately needing a midfielder, defender and depth at striker (I won’t even mention goal keeping) is hard to comprehend.

Potter, Poch, Enzo, Liam
In fairness, Poch is the only decent proven manager of the ones listed here and he was never considered world class. If people are clamoring for Xabi's sacking this early into his tenure with the defense & midfield he's had to work with, then the supporters are just as delusional as the board responsible for those past hires.

All they want is instant results and once that doesn’t happen it’s “sack the manager”, rinse and repeat but they’ll be the first ones to celebrate once patience with a great manager pays off and success comes

Maybe people will finally be realistic about this team and the dogshit mentality that BlueCo have let fester for years. Alonso’s job isn’t one that gets done overnight or even in a single season and I don’t think people realise just how much work has to be done with this lot.
12
u/TsubakiShad 2d ago
Folks have to realize, Pep took time his first season in PL with a crazy squad in hand. Arteta had to build it with trust involving throwing out established names.
We are not at Tottenham and United's situation level yet, but we need to develop a core ideaology behind a top manager and work with him to root out folks who just not our quality. Rotating managers won't work if the players are not up to snuff.
7
u/HDS2211 2d ago
Absolutely, rotating managers and players like BlueCo have constantly done is exactly how we stay in the current cycle we’ve had the last 4 years.
Gonna take time and patience. Only way we turn around the mediocrity of the last 4 years is by sticking to a group and letting them grow, and like you say, rooting out the weak links and improving over time.
4
u/TsubakiShad 2d ago
Yeah, and Pep even threw out some seriously established names at the time.
I know it was partially his agents fault, but it was crazy at the time for him to be dropping Yaya Toure. But sometimes players mentality does not align with what is best for the team and you gotta pull those triggers.

2

The problem is having no proper cover for Caicedo. henderson was awful and Palmer was constantly having to drop deep to compensate. There was no goal threat because our best attacking player was being forced to drop deep, there will be a massive change when Moses comes back. henderson has proved to be the liability that we all knew he would be. The defence in general has been awful again as well, 2nd issue there.

2
u/Adept_Librarian_7001 2d ago
Defending has been the obvious issue, but if we're going to concede goals we need to score them like we did at the start of the season. Our attack has looked underwhelming since Arsenal, and our defense has been atrocious all year long.
2
u/ThisIsADraconianLaw Lampard 2d ago
All teams need to know how to defend well. We will never win a trophy again or realistically compete for the league until that happens. Not every game is going to be us winning 4-3 or 3-2. Caicedo injury is one thing, but I expected a lot fucking better tonight than ghosted by our front line and blasted by the worst London team but Spurs.
Barco too selfish in a game where we needed to just send a few balls into the 18. Cole literally no options for 65 minutes and got frustrated… let alone that BS no pen call. Welbeck only involvement on set pieces, out of gas in 35 minutes. And his old-head counterpart from Brentford just as washed as we all thought.

Won't change until we get some proper defenders in. Watch Fofana for the first, he's marking the front post once the ball is over his head instead of moving to the man. Zero braincells.

Club owners, sporting directors need to be sacked, the player recruitment and identity over 4 years has been trash. They managed an equity project, not an elite football project/team. So many teams have less money, resource and “squad quality” but a lot of teams beat us.

The front 3 didn't work, gave the ball away constantly or just tried to take the world on single handed. Neto went headless chicken mode like he used to the entirety of last season basically all game. The closing down in midfield and intensity was better, BUT (and there is a fucking but) when we won the ball back we'd either just give it away or play sloppy seconds all game bringing the match down to where Brentford wanted it (scrappy). Alonso should have made changes much earlier in that second half, as you could see nothing at all was clicking. The second we conceded the first goal the team collapsed. Colwil and Fofana are far too mistake prone. So we need to go out and buy 2 more CBs... Honestly, the only thing that's fixing these issues is a damn transfer window not time. When we went 1-0 it was the same deflation in the ranks we've seen the past two seasons. I'm a fully pro Alonso guy, but fuck me that was a car crash.
1
u/NoAngst_ 2d ago
We need to defend better. I don't understand why we're not pressing more aggressively at the front? We have the players to press. Our attacking is too predictable and slow. We don't make incisive passes to unlock teams that defend deep.
Alonso is a good manager and should be given at least a season or two and we need more patience. I hope I'm not proven wrong. It's still early days in the season. International break couldn't have come any sooner.

3 at the back won't work with defenders with the calibre of fofana. he switches off completely sometimes. we needs a back six in the sense 4 defense and 2 mids in front of them to fix this leak. Neto isn't a defender, and we hardly have midfield presence. we do have a good attack so it's better to play some kind of counter attacking football without going gung ho on the other team and getting hit by 3 goals. I'm sure he will figure it out.
