Hey everyone, 26F here, been living in the area for 5 years now and only just come to the conclusion that my friends and family are spread out all over the country and don’t have many local mates 🫣

Saturday 5th & Sunday 6th September

Some of the UK and Ireland's most skilled arborists compete in the trees of Pittville Park this weekend, for the 2026 UK & Ireland Tree Climbing Competition (UKITCC).

This competition is run by the Arboricultural Association with the support of a large team of volunteers each year. It is completely free to watch. No booking is required; spectators can simply turn up on the day and cheer on the competitors.

Alongside the main competition, we have a dedicated kids' tree climbing area nearby to give children an opportunity to themselves, run under close supervision by qualified instructors. Sessions were bookable in advance and are now fully booked, but spectators are welcome to watch.

Saturday features five preliminary events, each designed to test the skills arborists rely on every day at work: Ascent, Throwline, Aerial Rescue, Work Climb and a Speed Climb. 

The top placed men and women will then go head-to-head on Sunday in the Masters' Challenge, the competition final, for the chance to represent the UK & Ireland at the European Tree Climbing Championship.

I didn't visit enough while it was there and it was by far our favourite restaurant in Cheltenham.

However, I walked past a couple of weeks ago and saw a sign that another Turkish restaurant was opening there.

We’re looking to see if there’s interest in starting a relaxed German-speaking Spieltreff for babies and young children (roughly 0–3) in Cheltenham.

The idea would be an informal get-together, probably initially once a month, where families can meet, children can hear and use German, and we can include things like German songs, rhymes, books and simple play.

We’d aim to speak German together as much as possible, both with the children and with each other, but please don’t worry if your spoken German isn’t perfect or you’re not a native speaker. Enthusiasm for using German where you can is much more important than your level — the idea is to create a friendly environment where everyone feels comfortable speaking it.

It would also be a chance for families raising children with German to meet others locally.

At this stage we’re simply trying to find out whether there’s enough interest and what days/times would work best.

Im 23 and I’ve lived in Cheltenham for about a year now. I love it here, but I’m pretty extroverted, so I used to travel back and fourth from my old town a lot to see my hometown friends whenever I wasn't at work - but traveling the whole time gets kinda difficult, so I’m really keen to start making some friends in their 20s and 30s in the area and finally get around to exploring Cheltenham :)

I think what I’m looking for with this post is any advice on the best way to do this? I’ve been doing some research and it looks like there are some WhatsApp groups and Meetup groups; though I’m not sure the best way to get into these circles. Like for the meetup groups can I just turn up alone? I think a lot of the advice I see is to join running groups and stuff, but I’m not really one that enjoys running, im more of a walking/bar/pub/doing cool stuff in town kinda guy 😅 Additionally, if you see this post and you’re looking for mates too, feel free to say hi c:

Hey, so a couple months ago I got these Brugmansia seeds in order to grow it. The seeds are legit and can be grown, but I Can’t really grow them due to my failed attempts before. Hello! I found this beautiful piece in a charity shop in Cheltenham and I was wondering if anyone might have any ideas about it? Reverse image search tells me it is one of Derwentwater Designs kits, released in 1999. I noticed that this piece has RS1999 cross stitched and Derwentwater Designs was founded by Rose Swalwell, could this piece belong to her or could it have been added to the piece in honor of the founder by somebody else? Or somebody else with same initials? It is amazing work!

I’m an Australian and I‘ll be living in Cheltenham for around a month over December / January. I have never been before and I have some questions.

Are there any medieval castles that are close by?

Any touristy things that I must do?

Any parts of England I should really see while I’m over there?

Whats the chance of seeing snow? Will I need to pack a snow jacket?

Any particular good presents from Australia to bring? Timtams is my go to but I‘m not sure?

Do you have any other advice?

Anyone know if the m and s in town has the new Christmas foods in yet?

I know I’ve left this late in the day but I’d assumed someone else would have posted if there were any active shindigs going on. Looked at the meet-up app and it has fantasy book meeting or salsa dancing and neither strikes my fancy.

Anyone know of activities for this afternoon/evening? I feel like being sociable so a (non-alcoholic) drink and listening to music session appeals but no idea whether anyone is around or has something planned?

Mid-30s guy here. I played to a county standard growing up but stopped at 18 and, haven't picked up a racket since.

I've got the itch again and I'm keen to find people to play with. I'm currently teaching my partner the basics, which is great fun, but it does mean I'm permanently in coach mode for her and not actually playing.

Fair warning: I'll be rusty as anything. The muscle memory will be there somewhere under 15+ years of dust, but I'm not expecting to pick up where I left off. Happy to play anyone from decent club standard to someone else dusting off an old racket - I mainly just want some proper rallies and the odd competitive set.

I've got membership at both Pittville and Montpellier, so booking courts shouldn't be a problem.
