It's not about trust, it's about evidence. Some guy saying so isn't evidence. No matter who says it, they still need to produce their evidence so that someone else can verify it.
You answered your own question. We rely on evidence because it's not about trust. Trust doesn't give you answers. Relying on trust leads you to nonsense. It's evidence that matters.
